Larry Birkhead opens up on 'hard' life as parent since the death of Anna Nicole Smith
Larry Birkhead has "always tried to protect" his daughter since the death of Anna Nicole Smith. The 52-year-old photographer is father to Dannielynn, 18, with the legendary supermodel - who died of a of a drugs overdose at the age of 39 just six months after she gave birth in 2007 - and admitted it was "hard" to know just who to trust when he was bringing their daughter up alone. He told E! News: "It's hard. When she was younger and had friends over, or went out, it was tough figuring out who was genuine. "I've always tried to protect her not just from media and paparazzi, but even people we let into our circle. "Some had great intentions, but others didn't. "Some would say, 'I want to hang out with you because I think I can get on Entertainment Tonight,' or 'Can you help my kid model? or 'We need a vacation but can't afford it. You hear all kinds of things." Larry added that to this day, while Dannielynn has "great friends", he is always on guard and "scanning the room" whenever she spends time with someone. He said: "She has great friends—but I've learned to keep one eye open. "It feels like I'm always on security duty, always scanning the room. We've had to make life adjustments. But at the same time, we've had so much support." Ahead of Father's Day, Larry revealed that members of the public often praise him on what he has managed to do as a single parent. He said: "People come up and say, 'You've inspired me as a single parent,' or 'Anna inspired me.' Especially around Father's Day, I get those comments—and I actually make them repeat it. "I'm like 'Could you say that again? Oh, I'm a good dad? One more time, please!'" Larry also shared an update on his daughter, and revealed that she is pursuing an education in the way that her mother never did. He said: "Her mom only went to school until the 10th grade, and I've always encouraged Dannielynn to aim higher—even higher than me. "I'm proud of the young woman she's become: silly, smart, fun and beautiful."

The 18-year-old attended the Kentucky Derby's annual Barnstable Brown Gala on Friday night and wore the same dress her mother wore to the event in 2004. 'Dannielynn is wearing Anna Nicole's dress that she wore 21 years ago to this same event. Life full circle,' said her father, Larry Birkhead, who shared the touching moment on Instagram Friday. 'She said she chose the dress because it was her mum's and 'super cool.'' The floor-length black gown features a plunging neckline, crystal-embellished straps across the front bodice and a bold low back. While walking the red carpet, Dannielynn told reporters, 'This is the closest to a hug I can get from her.' Prior to Friday night's event, Larry, 52, told People that he's had the dress 'for years' but still found it 'emotional' seeing his daughter put on the sentimental piece. 'It was emotional because the last time I saw that dress was on Anna,' said Larry. The photographer reportedly met the late actress at the Barnstable Gala in 2003. He fondly remembered how Dannielynn would walk 'over and put her hand on the dress' when she 'was a little girl.' 'And now that she's actually old enough to wear it, it just seems surreal that we're at this moment,' Larry shared. While Larry acknowledged the risqué look is 'a little edgier for her than most dresses she wears,' he explained that he felt Dannielynn chose the dress as 'a fashion experiment for herself.' 'Also, I think it's really meaningful for her to wear. I'm just glad she's going through and starting to wear some of [Smith's clothes] because she could literally pick out an outfit a day for the rest of her life and never wear the same thing twice with everything,' he added. Larry revealed he still keeps all of Smith's clothes and belongings to pass on to their daughter some day — a move that amounts to 'over $200,000 in storage bills.' '[I] just hope that she would appreciate some of these things some day,' he shared. 'She's just now starting to get into the curiosity of some of the fashion and things in her mum's world.' 'When somebody passes away, you think, 'Oh, I'm not getting rid of anything. And then you go through the emotions of, okay, do I really want this? Do I really need this?'… and you think, 'Well, if there's just one thing in there that she can connect with, that gives her a sense of who her mum was. So it was really special that she picked out the dress to wear,' he continued. Smith died on February 8, 2007, at age 39. Her cause of death was listed as an accidental overdose. Months later, Birkhead was awarded custody of Dannielynn after a highly publicised legal battle.

'We try to talk about him and I shared a birthday with him, so we always celebrated together.' He added, 'You know, I tell her stories about them and I try to not make it heavy, because she's just now becoming a teenager and I think some of that stuff will come...' And while also speaking with in 2023, Birkhead was asked if his daughter did anything that reminded him of Smith - whom he first met in 2003. 'Yeah she can spend my money like her mom. And she loves to do that,' he humorously stated. He later expressed, 'I've created such a foundation for that I've given the tools to say, look, this. Life is normal now. 'I'm very picky and selective. She's very grounded and very humble. She is not one of these entitled celebrity kids. She's gone to a public school all her life. That's what she chose. She said I want to go to public school and not to private.' Birkhead further gushed, 'Dannielynn is on the honor roll and she makes great grades. She is taking college level classes. Anna would be very, very proud of her. I know I am.'

Dannielynn Birkhead, who is the daughter of Anna Nicole Smith, has told how she dreams of being a model and actress, like her mum. "I'm definitely looking forward to modelling and acting," she told E! News. "I've just gotten inspired by a lot of my favourite actors and actresses." The teen told how she met Wolverine star Hugh Jackman after one of his recent performances of his Broadway play, From New York With Love. "I watch a lot of his movies for comfort, so that kind of translated to real life," she said of her admiration for the 56-year-old. "He's been my favourite actor for 10 years. I don't know how I survived (meeting him)." Despite her plans to be in the spotlight, Dannielynn shared that she's still planning on continuing her studies. "I have a college that I'm going to apply to," she said. "I'm interested in forensics, but of course, I would like to do modelling and acting on the side." Her dad, Larry Birkhead, shared how he wants to help his daughter - but how he is also wary of what fame can bring. "When she says she wants to do these things, I'm going to be supportive of it," he said. "But I give her some cautionary tales of things that I encountered, her mom encountered, and so I think we put that all together and give her the support, and we'll see what happens." Dannielynn's mum, Anna Nicole Smith, died in 2007 of an accidental overdose. Dannielynn has been raised by her father, Larry, and has lived a life largely out of the spotlight.
