Stirling youngsters praised for "impressive" exam results as increase recorded
The number of pupils in Stirling achieving success at National Five and Higher levels were outlined in figures released by Stirling Council. Stirling's school pupils have been praised for a 'very impressive' set of exam results as youngsters across the region received the big news yesterday (August 5). Figures revealed by Stirling Council on the SQA results day have shown an increase in the number of pupils picking up five awards or more at National Five level by the end of S4. The percentage of pupils securing one, three or five Highers by the end of S5 has also improved, as well as those in S6 achieving three or five Highers. The general upward trend follows the national data, with the qualifications body - set to be replaced next year - claiming that 2025 was a 'landmark year' in terms of attainment for the 147,000 learners across Scotland who received their results. The convener of Stirling Council's Social Work and Education Committee, Cllr Danny Gibson, said; 'This is a very impressive set of results for our young people and recognition of their hard work and commitment – you should all be very proud of your achievements. 'It's also important to acknowledge the dedication and support of our amazing teachers, school staff and parents and carers in our school communities. 'These results and qualifications will open the door to exciting opportunities for our young people, whether that's further education, training or the world of work. We can't wait to see where your journey takes you next.' Among those receiving their results on a traditionally tense morning were pupils from Bannockburn High - with the school recording a significant improvement in number of young people achieving five or more Highers in S5. The school's head teacher, Karen Hook, said: 'We are incredibly proud of our all of our students' achievements this year – their hard work, resilience, and determination have truly paid off. 'These results reflect not only their commitment but also the dedication of our entire school community.' Scotland's Chief Examining Officer, Donna Stewart, also added her words of congratulations to the country's young people as she reflected on improvements in the overall picture - including an increase in attainment across all levels of National Qualifications. Ms Stewart said: 'Scotland's learners should be rightly proud today – and we are proud of them. 'Their hard work and commitment has made 2025 a landmark year. 'The rise in overall attainment at all three National Qualification levels will rightly be welcomed in classrooms and staffrooms across Scotland. Higher entries have also risen beyond 200,000 for the first time since Curriculum for Excellence was introduced. 'The number of vocational and technical qualifications passed the 100,000 landmark for the first time, with record numbers of learners embracing the wide range of skills-based learning that schools, colleges, teachers and lecturers are working so hard to offer and that employers are crying out for. '2025 has also seen the poverty-related attainment gap narrow at all levels of national qualifications. We welcome that progress towards the shared national mission to reduce inequality. 'All of those achievements are to be celebrated – and they belong to Scotland's learners. For those in need of advice or support following results day, a specialist helpline has been set up to help. Skills Development Scotland's 'results helpline' went live at 8am yesterday and will be open until Friday (August 8), with expert advisers o hand to discuss issues including course vacancies at UK colleges and universities, confirmation and clearing, advice about foundation, modern, and graduate apprenticeships, jobs, volunteering, or staying on at school. The helpline can be contacted on 0808 100 8000. Cllr Gibson added: 'While this will be a day of celebration for some of our young people, others may not have achieved the results they had hoped for and may be feeling disappointed or anxious. 'Please remember that exams results are just one small part of your journey, and support is available to help you take the next steps with confidence, regardless of what path you are considering.'

Councillor call for wider debate on Stirling school mobile phone policies
The current situation allows for individual schools across the region to prepare their own policies on mobile phone usage in classrooms. Mobile phone use in schools could be debated by councillors. Individual schools across the area have their own approach to pupils' phones in their buildings and classrooms. But a rural Stirling councillor has asked when the topic could be brought before elected members for wider discussion. Last year the Scottish Government published guidance that enabled headteachers to limit or ban the use of mobile phones at their schools. But at a recent full meeting of Stirling Council, Forth and Endrick ward Conservative councillor Paul Henke asked just what such bans or limitations existing at each of the area's secondary schools. Children and young people committee convener, Labour councillor Danny Gibson, said: 'The Scottish Government published Mobiles Phones-Guidance for Schools (August 2024). 'The vision of the paper is 'to enable all schools and local authorities to develop an ethos of citizenship that leads to respectful and responsible use of mobile technology. This will encourage schools to positively embrance mobile technology to enhance learning now and in the future, whilst helping them protect staff, children and young people from the possible disruptive and harmful consequences of misuse'. 'All of Stirling Council secondary schools have reviewed their mobile phone policies in line with the national guidance. 'Each school has established a clear and consistent policy on acceptable use of mobile phones, developed in consultation with parents, carers, pupils and staff. 'While each school has tailored their policy to suit the individual context, there are several common themes across all schools.' The themes include: classroom expectations - pupils must deposit their phones in secure storage boxes upon entering the classroom or keep them on silent and stored in their school bags during lessons; use during the school day - mobile devices, including headphones earphones, must not be used during the school day, except before school starts, at break time, and at lunchtime; and responsible use - all mobile devices must be used responsibily and in accordance with the school's policy. Cllr Henke thanked the convener for the response, but further asked him to advise when a council policy covering this could be brought forward to committee for debate. Cllr Gibson said: 'I'll check with officers what the intention is in that regard and I'll advise the councillors directly.'

Work to begin on Stirling Council's first new primary school in 30 years
Corbiewood PS will serve the 800-home South Stirling Gateway housing estate, with completion for the project expected in time for the 2026/27 academic term. Building work is to begin on Stirling Council's first new primary school in almost 30 years. Ground will be broken on the new primary school serving the new major housing development at South Stirling Gateway in the coming weeks. Work on the site is due to begin in late June where a seven-classroom facility will be built in the heart of the development site by McLaughlin & Harvey. It is anticipated to be completed by the beginning of the 2026/27 academic term and will be followed by a four-classroom extension in 2033/34 depending on roll estimates. The new school will be constructed alongside external sports and landscaping and be linked to active travel routes to and from Bannockburn and its surrounding areas. Planning permission for the school was granted at the Planning and Regulation Panel in February. Pending approval from councillors, the new school will be named Corbiewood Primary School. It will be the first new school built within the Stirling Council area to support population growth since Newton Primary School in Dunblane opened its doors in 1996. Children and Young People Convener, Cllr Danny Gibson said: 'An exciting milestone in the South Stirling Gateway development has being reached with the appointment of a contractor to build this brand new primary school that will serve this emerging community. 'This modern, state of the art school epitomises Stirling Council's commitment to its ongoing investment in learning infrastructure for our children and young people and will help the new community to continue to thrive. 'Work will get underway shortly and we will keep local people updated throughout the construction. I can't wait to see the progress of the new school as it develops in tandem with the new housing development over the coming months and years. This is another sign that Stirling is continuing to flourish and grow.' Chris Boyle, Framework Director at McLaughlin & Harvey said: 'We are delighted to be delivering a new primary school for Stirling Council that will be at the heart of the South Stirling Gateway development. This project offers the chance for us to deliver a modern, exciting building, which can help achieve educational excellence. 'Our early partnership with the council, facilitated through the SCAPE Framework, has been the catalyst for designing a truly sustainable project within the agreed budget and timescales. We look forward to continuing our work with Stirling Council to construct a building which can inspire future generations of young people.' Children from South Stirling Gateway will be accommodated at Bannockburn Primary School while construction is underway and will initially feed into Bannockburn High School. The developers are in the first phase of housebuilding on the site following planning permission being granted in April 2024 for the first 150 homes. The South Stirling Gateway Development will deliver around new 800 homes with almost 200 allocated for affordable housing.
