Bill proposes renaming part of Southern Boulevard as President Donald Trump Boulevard
A bill filed in the Florida Legislature would rename a portion of Southern Boulevard in Palm Beach County as "President Donald J. Trump Boulevard." The measure, House Bill 697, was filed by state Rep. Danny Nix, Jr., R-Port Charlotte. It would also affect the naming of three other roadways in Florida, including another part of Southern. It would not be the first road named after the 45th and 47th president. Last year, a Miami-Dade city, Hialeah, named a four-mile stretch of roadway President Donald J. Trump Avenue. Mayor Esteban Bovo made the announcement at a rally Trump held in the city in November 2023, at which Bovo even presented Trump with the sign. Neither would it be the first roadway in Palm Beach County named for recent U.S. presidents. In 2015, Riviera Beach renamed part of Old Dixie Highway 'President Barack Obama Highway.' Delray Beach also has a George Bush Boulevard, named after the 41st president. The legislation in Tallahassee proposes President Donald Trump Boulevard would span the section of Southern from S. Ocean Boulevard, in front of Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, across the Southern Boulevard Bridge over the Intracoastal to Kirk Road in West Palm Beach. Southern Boulevard is U.S. Route 98, which crosses almost a thousand miles from Palm Beach to Bude, Mississippi. In Florida, it wraps around the eastern boundary of Lake Okeechobee, cuts through Sebring, Lakeland and then along the Panhandle coast from Apalachicola to Panama City to Pensacola. The counties that U.S. 98 traverses in Florida have voted heavily for Trump since his first White House run in 2016. Nix's bill would also designate a piece of Southern Boulevard between the the 18000 22 block and Royal Palm Beach Boulevard as "PBSO Motorman Highway." It would also designate U.S. 41 between Melbourne Street and 13 Church Street in Charlotte County as "Sergeant 14 Elio Diaz Memorial Highway," as a portion of Interstate 275 between mile markers 47 and 48 in Hillsborough County as "Master Patrol Officer 17 Jesse Madsen Memorial Highway." Diaz was a Charlotte County deputy who was killed after conducting a traffic stop in 2024. Madsen was a Tampa police officer who veered into the path of a wrong-way driver in 2021 to protect others on I-275. In 1998, the Legislature designated the Florida Turnpike as the Ronald Reagan Turnpike in honor of the 40th president.
