‘Boston Blue' spin-off confirmed with Donnie Wahlberg; fan-favourite role recast as series moves in new direction
The Blue Bloods universe is set to expand with a new spin-off series titled 'Boston Blue', but one familiar face will be missing from the cast. Donnie Wahlberg will reprise his role as Detective Danny Reagan, a character he played throughout all 14 seasons of the original police procedural. The upcoming series, which shifts its setting from New York to Boston, will also follow Danny's son Sean Reagan as he begins his career as a patrol officer in the Boston Police Department. However, the character of Sean will no longer be portrayed by Andrew Terraciano. Terraciano, who appeared in 292 out of 293 episodes of 'Blue Bloods', will be replaced by actor Mika Amonsen. Best known for guest appearances in 'Suits' and 'Reacher', Amonsen steps into the role with no public explanation offered for the casting change. Neither CBS nor Terraciano has commented on the recasting, and the actor has remained silent since the conclusion of 'Blue Bloods', aside from a heartfelt farewell post on social media when filming wrapped in 2024. Andrew had written, 'It feels like, after 15 years, 'family' isn't a big enough word for all of the people at Blue Bloods that have changed me, and helped me, and grown with me (sic).' "When this show started, I was just a strange six year old, and I was surrounded by people who, even then, seemed like kids to me - now so many of them have grown and changed and helped create such a fantastic story for the Reagans as a whole, and for our extended family of viewers (sic)," he added. The cancellation of 'Blue Bloods' by CBS in 2024, despite vocal protests from its cast and loyal fanbase, marked the end of a 14-year run that began in 2010. The original series chronicled the lives of the Reagan family, led by police commissioner Frank Reagan, portrayed by Tom Selleck, and his children—all of whom served in various branches of law enforcement. 'Boston Blue' was announced just two months after the original series ended, a move that signalled CBS's intent to continue building on the show's legacy. The new series, penned by writers Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, will delve into Danny Reagan's new chapter in Boston while exploring Sean's journey through the ranks of the city's police force. Joining Wahlberg and Amonsen in the cast are Sonequa Martin-Green, Gloria Reuben, Maggie Lawson, Marcus Scribner, and Ernie Hudson. It remains unconfirmed whether Tom Selleck will make any appearances in the spin-off. Production details and a premiere date for 'Boston Blue' have not yet been announced.

CBS' ‘Blue Bloods' spinoff recasts Sean Reagan role, Mika Amonsen takes over as Donnie Wahlberg's son
CBS's upcoming 'Blue Bloods' spinoff has recast Danny Reagan's son after the same actor played the recurring role throughout the original 14 seasons. Andrew Terraciano will not return as Sean Reagan in 'Boston Blue' after appearing in nearly every episode across 14 seasons as the son of Donnie Wahlberg's character, Danny Reagan, in the hit primetime network show. Instead, Mika Amonsen will take over the role as the youngest Reagan son, who relocates with his father to Beantown to start a new chapter working as a patrolman for the Boston Police Department in the 'Blue Bloods' offshoot. 5 Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and his nephew Joe Hill (Will Hochman) in the 'Blue Bloods' episode 'No Good Deed.' Amonsen has previously appeared in Prime Video's 'Reacher,' ABC's 'Designated Survivor,' and had a role in Eli Roth's 2023 horror film 'Thanksgiving.' Blue Bloods spinoff casts star from The Walking Dead alongside Donnie Wahlberg
Donnie Wahlberg's Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue has cast Sonequa Martin-Green. The 40-year-old former Walking Dead actress will play Lena Peters, a detective whose family has a law enforcement background. In the show Peters is partnered with Danny Reagan, 55-year-old Wahlberg's reprised Blue Bloods role, according to a Variety report. Both Wahlberg and Martin-Green appeared at a CBS press briefing in Los Angeles on Wednesday to announce the update. Lena reportedly said about the show's main characters, 'We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long. And I feel that we'll love the Peters too.' She added, 'I'm super excited for this partnership, and to be back in a CBS family — and in this family, your family. It means a lot, and I'm grateful for it. I think we're going to have a good time.' Donnie, an executive producer on the forthcoming series, described Sonequa as 'not the first choice — the only choice.' Per Variety, he stated, 'One thing about Blue Bloods and how beloved it was is because there are so many law enforcement families in this country. There's not just the Reagans. They're in every state, every city, every town, everywhere, and there are other families around that have stories to tell too.' Turning to the novel series, he noted, 'Danny's story will continue the Reagan family. You can't have Danny without Reagans — there'll be connective tissue. But we're also going to get to discover a new family and and carry on the tradition of telling their stories.' The offshoot show was confirmed by CBS in February, along with the update that the story would move from New York City to Boston. Blue Bloods debuted in 2010, following a family of New York City cops led by patriarch Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck). In addition to Danny, family also included Frank's son Jamie (Will Estes) and daughter Erin (Bridget Moynihan). The series, which ran for 14 seasons spanning 293 episodes, came to a close with the finale in December 2024. Donnie is said to be at odds with ex co-star Tom over the spinoff. RadarOnline reported earlier this year that he was furious to learn about Donnie's new leading role, with a source calling his moving forward with the show a 'huge betrayal' and 'the end' of their friendship. Selleck, 80, reportedly fought to stop Blue Bloods from ending. 'This is a HUGE betrayal,' the insider dished to the outlet. 'The Reagans never left New York. Now Danny's just up and moving to Boston? Selleck is furious. It's like throwing the rest of the cast away, including the star.' It was added, 'Tom considered himself this father figure to Donnie and helped him with his acting skills, and now he's found out everything going on behind his back. It's a huge burn. He feels a sense of betrayal and is furious over the news.' The site also claimed Wahlberg could have stopped the Boston Blue from happening, but was more enticed by money than loyalty.
