Man Arrested After Trying to Tow a Car Backwards on a Highway
Towing a car is a fairly simple procedure. All you need is a suitable trailer and a vehicle with enough power to pull the weight. The driver of this Saab 9-3 Aero convertible only had one of those things. And it's landed him in jail.
Police were called to Interstate 610 in Houston, Texas, on Monday for an improperly towed vehicle swinging in and out of lanes, causing a hazardous situation. Video taken from an onlooker shows the Saab droptop being pulled via chain by a white Ford Expedition, nearly striking other motorists.
This situation is dangerous for a few reasons. Flat-towing—when a vehicle pulls another vehicle without a trailer—is a treacherous endeavor on its own. Done correctly, the vehicle being towed is supposed to face
forward
, not backward, so the front wheels don't have an opportunity to turn and cause a crash. That's nearly what happened here.
No injuries were reported, thankfully. When officers finally caught up to the two cars, they ran the plates on the Saab and discovered its occupant, identified as 32-year-old Dante Brown, had a warrant out for his arrest in DeKalb County, Georgia.
The driver of the white SUV, identified as Brown's girlfriend, was not taken into custody.
Take this video as a lesson: If you absolutely need to tow a car, at least take the proper precautions. Otherwise, you might go viral and end up on national television (and in jail).
