Don't panic Eskom says after Koeberg Nuclear Power Station siren activated
The siren emitted a brief alarm tone. Residents of a suburb in Cape Town were left shocked and panic-stricken when Siren 913, part of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station's Public Notification System, was inadvertently activated. Siren 913, located in the green belt opposite West Coast Village in Sunningdale, went off at about 2pm on Wednesday, leaving people concerned that a problem had occurred at Koeberg. Don't panic Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena said the siren was activated during routine maintenance and urged the public not to panic. 'The siren emitted a brief alarm tone. Eskom would like to assure the public that there is no emergency at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, and no action is required from members of the public. 'This has no impact on the normal operations of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. Siren 913 is one of more than 80 sirens that form part of the Public Notification System supporting the Koeberg Nuclear Emergency Plan,' Mokwena said. 'We sincerely apologise for any concern or inconvenience caused by this unintentional activation. We appreciate the public's understanding and cooperation,' Mokwena said. No load shedding Meanwhile, as the winter season approaches, Eskom has denied reports that it plans to implement 14-hour load shedding. This comes after a post was circulated on social media platforms about the rolling blackout next month. '14-hour load shedding: Residents of Gauteng and the Northern Cape are set to face significant disruptions this week with a scheduled 14-hour load shedding. As the national power grid struggles to meet demand, these prolonged outages are expected to impact daily life significantly,' the post claimed. Fake news Eskom labelled the report as fake news. 'Eskom categorically rejects the false claims circulating online about a 14-hour outage or imminent load shedding. These reports are completely untrue'. Eskom said the power system is stable. Eskom denies reports of 14-hour load shedding in June
Eskom said the power system is stable. As the winter season approaches, Eskom has denied reports that it plans to implement 14-hour load shedding. 'Load shedding has remained suspended since 22:00 on 15 May 2025. There are no planned outages of this scale. 'Misinformation causes unnecessary alarm. Stay informed— trust only official Eskom updates on our official platforms. Be vigilant, verify information before you share,' Eskom said. 'System constraints remain, and adequate emergency reserves are in place and strategically deployed to support demand during the morning and evening peak winter periods. 'As the winter season sets in, planned maintenance has gradually decreased, averaging 4 482MW this week (16 to 22 May 2025)—slightly higher than the typical winter maintenance levels in prior years,' Mokwena said. Diesel expenditure She said the Open-Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) load factor decreased to 7.65% compared to 10.94% in the previous week (9 to 15 May 2025). 'The diesel expenditure is still within budget for the current financial year. Diesel usage is expected to decline further as more units return from long-term repairs and maintenance activities are reduced, increasing available generation capacity'. Load shedding in Winter Mokwena said the winter outlook covering the period ending 31 August 2025, remains valid. She said it indicates that load shedding will not be necessary if unplanned outages stay below 13 000MW. 'If outages rise to 15 000MW, load shedding would be limited to a maximum of 21 days out of 153 days and restricted to stage 2,' Mokwena said. Eskom announces Stage 2 load shedding: What you need to know from Tuesday afternoon
Eskom announced it would be implementing Stage 2 load shedding during evening peak periods from Tuesday from 4pm to 10pm until Thursday. The power utility said this was necessary in order to manage the limited generation capacity and sure a continued supply during the working days. 'This decision follows the delayed return of generation units amounting to 3,120MW, as well as an additional loss of 1,385MW in the past 24 hours due to unplanned breakdowns. The primary reason for this setback is the delay in returning several units from planned maintenance. These delays, coupled with an unplanned capacity loss that has now temporarily exceeded 13,000MW, align with the risk scenarios shared in our Winter 2025 Outlook,' Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena said.

10 Johannesburg suburbs to be affected by a power outage
A planned power outage is set to affect 10 suburbs in Johannesburg. The outage will occur on Sunday, 4 May 2025, from 8:00 to 14:00 (6 hours). The planned power outage is due to maintenance work that the power utility regularly does on its electricity network. 'The interruption is necessary to do essential maintenance work on our network, which is part of our program of constantly striving to provide a better service,' the statement read. These are the suburbs that will be affected by the power outage: Observatory North Cyrildene Central Cyrildene South Bez Valley East Bez Valley/Kensington Kensington Ext. 5 Doorenfontein Bruma Deweshof Langerman Eskom has once again made a comeback to switching off lights. The power utility implemented stage 2 load shedding on Thursday, 24 April 2025, because of high electricity demand. 'As a result, Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented from 16:00 today and will remain in effect until 05:00 tomorrow (Friday). Given these ongoing constraints, we urge the public to use electricity sparingly to help reduce pressure on the grid,' Eskom mentioned. Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena said the planned maintenance would continue as they prepare for the upcoming winter season, where electricity will be used more frequently. She said, 'Planned maintenance continues to ensure system readiness for increased winter demand, to meet regulatory requirements, and to ensure environmental compliance.'
