How Indiana basketball coach Darian DeVries handles having his son, Tucker, on his team
Indiana basketball coach Darian DeVries has plenty experience coaching his son, Tucker. How they handle the situation, however, goes back even further than Tucker playing for his dad at Drake. "Doug McDermott said, 'You guys can rip on my dad because I'm going to do it too,'" DeVries said on the Field of 68 with Jeff Goodman of McDermott playing for his father, Greg, at Creighton where DeVries was an assistant. "Coach McDermott was the same. "(I told Tucker), 'You're one of the guys. That's your time, your space, that has to be a place you can go and be like everybody else.' When we're together off the floor, we go back to that father-son relationship.' On the floor, in the locker room, you want to make it as seamless as possible with teammates. I thought Greg and Doug McDermott did a tremendous job of that." Tucker DeVries, a 6-foot-7 guard, has averaged 17.7 points and 5.6 rebounds during his career at Drake and West Virginia. He is returning to workouts after dealing with a right shoulder injury he suffered at West Virginia last season. He had surgery on the same shoulder in March 2024. Our book on legendary IU coach Bob Knight is the perfect Father's Day gift Darian DeVries recently said he expects Tucker to be available for IU's game in Puerto Rico in August. "With this troop, part of (Tucker's role) is going to be teacher," Darian DeVries said. "He's the one guy familiar with the terminology, being a leader, being able to answer questions about what the coaches are looking for. His role (on the court) will evolve over the course of time as we figure out how to best utilize everybody on the roster."

Rebuilt Indiana basketball roster one Darian DeVries likes 'the way pieces will all connect'
The Indiana basketball roster under first-year coach Darian DeVries was released Monday, and two notable names weren't on it. But that is not to say that Luke Goode nor Anthony Leal have heard a decision on their NCAA eligibility waivers, IndyStar understands. DeVries said last week that the amount of waivers filed to the NCAA created "a little bit of a backlog" and that "we don't have a lot of clarity on when those decisions will be made." Speaking with reporters prior to Indiana's annual booster dinner at Huber's Orchard and Winery in southern Indiana, DeVries did note that the roster as it stands is not final and contingency plans are in place should Goode and/or Leal get denied an extra season of eligibility sought. 'We still have a couple open spots we're actively recruiting, to see if there's something that fits and makes sense,' DeVries said. 'We can kind of go in a lot of different directions with that, as the roster stands today.' His first tasks as IU coach were to build a roster that became increasingly barren as the transfer portal opened. It left him with no players on a roster while also trying to assemble a staff to coach any players he did land. The roster stands with 10 transfers, one freshman and two walk-ons retained from last season's roster. 'We like the way the roster came together,' DeVries said Monday. 'We added a lot of quality shooters, which is a priority for us. We were also able to bring in good positional size and great depth. We like the way the pieces will all connect and the versatility we will be able to play with. They can complement each other on the floor.' IU was rated 10th by 247Sports' transfer portal rankings and 18th in On3's transfer portal rankings. Our book on legendary IU coach Bob Knight would make a great Father's Day gift! Here's the roster.

When will Tucker DeVries be ready for IU basketball after injury? Coach likes roster 'pieces'
BORDEN — Indiana basketball guard Tucker DeVries is nearing a full return to the court. DeVries has been rehabbing a right shoulder injury he suffered at West Virginia last season that limited to eight games. He previously had surgery on the same shoulder back in March 2024. First-year Indiana basketball coach Darian DeVries gave an update on his son's status Wednesday night while talking to reporters at the athletic department's annual booster event at Huber's Orchard. "For the most part, we are getting closer, we are awaiting final clearance for the full contact," Darian DeVries said. "He's able to do all the shooting drill work, lifting that's modified a little bit, I think by the time we get rolling here next week he should be fully cleared for full contact." It's perfect timing for Tucker with the new-look Hoosiers arriving on campus this weekend and scheduled for their first workout June 2. The former two-time Missouri Valley Conference player of the year looked sharp in footage posted to social media of a recent workout he had with Jordan Basye, a Bloomington-based coach and trainer. The 6-foot-7 guard has averaged 17.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists during his collegiate career (105 starts). Darian DeVries anticipates Tucker will be available to play in the three games Indiana has scheduled for its foreign tour of Puerto Rico in August. The Hoosiers will play the Puerto Rican All-Star team on Aug. 6 and have a pair of games scheduled against Mega Superbet, a professional club based out of Belgrade, Serbia. Insider: Will Luke Goode, Anthony Leal play for IU basketball next season? Where eligibility stands "I like the way the roster came together, " Darian DeVries said. "I think we got great depth in shooting the basketball, which was a priority for us. I think for the most part we got good positional size at a lot of the spots. The center we are a little smaller, but every other spot we got great size and I think overall we got great depth." "I like the way the pieces will all kind of connect together and I think compliment each other pretty well."

'There's something magical happening here': Indiana announces return of bison mascot
Hoosier the Bison is back! The Indiana University athletic department released a video Tuesday confirming that a bison mascot will return to the sidelines and courtside for Hoosiers sports teams in the fall. IU had a bison mascot for a few years in the 1960s, but it has been without a mascot since. The video uses a "Star Wars" intro, snippets of men's basketball coach Darian DeVries ("There's something magical happening here.") and football coach Curt Cignetti ("Where ya been?"), and an homage to NBA legend Michael Jordan (who, of course, played for the Chicago Bulls). "I'm back," is written on IU stationery, similar to how Jordan announced his return from a brief retirement in the 1990s. That leads into a panoramic view of the back of a mascot atop Memorial Stadium. IU had been leaning this direction during the 2024 football season. As IU charged into the College Football Playoff, several promos throughout the season featured bison imagery. IU Student Government voted to bring back the bison mascot, vowing to work with the athletic department to make it official. IUSG acted after receiving resounding support for a bison mascot on an Instagram poll. 'What's in the box?': Indiana trailer has fans wishing for return of the bison mascot The video begins with a "Star Wars" introduction: "For centuries bison walked through what is now known as Bloomington along the Buffalo Trace. "As a result, bison imagery has been found over the last 200 years on the campus of Indiana University. It is the distinguishing feature on the state seal. "In 1965, the bison became the official mascot of Indiana University. In 1969, it disappeared."
