Poland says jets scrambled due to Russian strikes on Ukraine

Poland said that aircraft have been scrambled to protect its airspace due to Russian strikes on Ukraine. "In connection with the activity of long-range aviation of the Russian Federation, conducting strikes on Ukrainian territory ... aircraft of the Polish Air Force and allied aviation are operating in Polish airspace," the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said on X. Yesterday, Polish officials said a Russian drone crashed in a field in the east of the country, an incident the defence minister described as a provocation. The drone hit and scorched a cornfield in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province, just over 100km from the Ukrainian border and around 90km from Belarus. The blast shattered windows in several homes, but nobody was injured, national news agency PAP reported. Police said they found burnt metal and plastic debris at the site and that corn had been burnt in an area of 8-10m diameter around the spot where the object fell. Poland has been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile struck a southern Polish village in 2022, killing two people. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pawel Wronski said some experts have suggested a Russian version of the Shahed drone developed by Iran was involved in the latest incident. General Dariusz Malinowski said the drone appeared to be a decoy which was designed to self-destruct. He said it had a Chinese engine. Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as defence minister, said the incident bore similarities to cases in which Russian drones flew into Lithuania and Romania, and could be linked to efforts to end the war in Ukraine. "Once again, we are dealing with a provocation by the Russian Federation, with a Russian drone. We are dealing with it in a crucial moment, when discussions about peace (in Ukraine) are under way," he told journalists. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on X his ministry would issue a protest against the airspace violation but did not name the perpetrator. "Another violation of our airspace from the East confirms that Poland's most important mission towards NATO is the defence of our own territory." In Ukraine, a combined Russian drone and missile attack on the western city of Lviv killed one person and injured two more, Lviv regional governor said. Tens of residential houses were also damaged in the attack, Governor Maksym Kozytskyi wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

Russian drone fell in eastern Poland, Warsaw says

OSINY, Poland (Reuters) -- A Russian drone crashed in a field in eastern Poland, according to early findings, Polish officials said on Wednesday, in an incident the nation's defense minister described as a provocation. The drone hit and scorched a cornfield in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province overnight, just over 100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border and around 90 km from Belarus. Poland has been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile struck a southern Polish village in 2022, killing two people. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pawel Wronski told Reuters that the findings so far and some experts have suggested a Russian version of the Shahed drone developed by Iran was involved in the latest incident. Gen. Dariusz Malinowski said the drone appeared to be a decoy which was designed to self-destruct. He said it had a Chinese engine. Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as defense minister, said the incident bore similarities to cases in which Russian drones flew into Lithuania and Romania, and could be linked to efforts to end the war in Ukraine. "Once again, we are dealing with a provocation by the Russian Federation, with a Russian drone. We are dealing with it in a crucial moment, when discussions about peace (in Ukraine) are underway," he told journalists. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on X his ministry would issue a protest against the airspace violation but did not name the perpetrator. "Another violation of our airspace from the East confirms that Poland's most important mission toward NATO is the defense of our own territory." The Russian Embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. US President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a group of European allies in the White House on Monday, following his meeting on Friday in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The blast shattered windows in several homes, but nobody was injured, national news agency PAP reported. Police said they found burnt metal and plastic debris at the site and that corn had been burnt in an area of 8-10 meter diameter around the spot where the object fell. "I was sitting in my room at night, around midnight, maybe, and I heard something just bang," local resident Pawel Sudowski told local news website "It exploded so loudly that the whole house simply shook." Air raid sirens rang out for about an hour over the border in Ukraine's Volyn and Lviv regions from around midnight, according to messages from its military posted on Telegram.

Poland Accuses Moscow Of 'Provocation' After Russian Drone Breaches Airspace, Explodes In Field

Last Updated: A Russian drone breached Polish airspace and exploded in a farmland in a village in the Lublin province overnight, although no injuries were reported. A Russian drone reportedly breached Poland's airspace on Wednesday, before exploding in a field in the eastern part of the country, with Warsaw labelling the incident as a 'provocation". The drone hit and exploded in a farmland in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province overnight, just over 100 km from the Ukrainian border. No casualties were reported, but officials told AFP the windows of some houses were blown out. Notably, Poland had been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile struck a southern Polish village in 2022, killing two people. 'Once again, we are facing a provocation from the Russian Federation, with a Russian drone," Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz told reporters. He highlighted that the incident took place when 'peace talks were underway, where there is hope that this war… has a chance to end. Russia provokes once again." Poland To Issue Formal Protest Polish General Dariusz Malinowski said the drone appeared to be a decoy which was designed to self-destruct, while containing a Chinese engine. The drone was believed to be a Russian drone model called Gerbera, which is often used as a decoy in multiple Russian drone and missile barrages against Ukraine. Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said his ministry would issue a protest against the airspace violation, but did not name the perpetrator. 'Another violation of our airspace from the East confirms that Poland's most important mission towards NATO is the defence of our own territory." The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. This comes less than a month after a Russian military drone flew into Lithuania from Belarus. It is worth mentioning that Poland has been a major supporter of Ukraine, and hosts over a million Ukrainian refugees and is a key transit point for Western humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine. 'I was sitting in my room at night, around midnight, maybe, and I heard something just bang," a Polish resident told Reuters. 'It exploded so loudly that the whole house simply shook." Polish officials say crashed drone is Russian 'provocation' – DW – 08/20/2025

Preliminary findings indicate that the object which crashed into a Polish cornfield was a Russian version of the Iranian-designed Shahed drone, Polish officials have said. Debris of what appears to be a Russian drone crashed into a field in Poland on Wednesday, Polish authorities said. "Once again, we are dealing with a provocation by the Russian Federation, with a Russian drone," Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said. "We are dealing in a crucial moment, when discussions about peace (in Ukraine) are underway." Local police found burned metal and plastic in a corn field outside the village of Osiny, in the east of the country. No casualties were reported. Polish media published photos of what appeared to be remains of the drone, including a charred engine and a propeller. The explosion left a crater 6 meters (20 feet) wide. The Polish Foreign Ministry said initial findings indicated the drone was a Russian-made version of the Shahed drone — an Iranian design that is commonly used to attack Ukraine. Polish general Dariusz Malinowski said the aircraft "was a decoy drone, which was not armed but carried a self-destruct warhead." "The Foreign Ministry will protest to the perpetrator of this violation," he wrote on social media. There have been a number of incursions into Polish airspace since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, raising alarm in the EU and NATO member state.
