Be it first or fourth, girl child victim of social prejudice: Probe

Ahmedabad: Whether it is the first pregnancy or the fourth, the girl child continues to be rejected. This was the harsh reality exposed by Ahmedabad rural police after they busted a racket involving home-based sex determination and illegal abortions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In one case, a woman aborted her first pregnancy solely because it was a girl. Another woman, a paramedic, chose to have an abortion when she was pregnant with her third daughter. A 22-year-old woman, already a mother of four girls, terminated her fifth pregnancy after learning it was another girl. "This case shows that all these abortions were driven by negative attitudes toward the girl child," said a senior officer of Ahmedabad rural police. "Some of these women are professionals, others are housewives, but all acted under family pressure, especially from husbands and in-laws." On May 27, police arrested nurse Hemlata Darji and radiologist Harshad Acharya, who allegedly carried out sex determination tests and abortions for Rs 15,000. Police said Acharya performed tests at his Odhav clinic, while Darji carried out the abortions at homes or a Bavla guesthouse. "These were not random acts but part of a planned service. The accused selected clients carefully, mostly through referrals," the officer said. "The clients didn't even visit the clinics. Blood samples were picked up by a lab courier, and abortions were done at home." Officers said that the nurse was well-networked and would offer her help in getting rid of a female fetus. Police found that 25 tests were conducted after which eight female fetuses were aborted. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Another police officer said that five people, including Acharya, Darji, a guesthouse owner, a woman who underwent abortion, and her sister-in-law, were arrested in the case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act charges.

GujCTOC invoked against cybercrime gang

Surat: A gang of cybercriminals has been been booked under the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime Act (GuJCTOC) for allegedly facilitating transactions worth Rs 197 crore — proceeds of cyber fraud — through 1,029 bank accounts linked to 214 FIRs registered across the country. The gang of Milan Darji and 10 others allegedly layered, laundered and transferred the proceeds of cyberfraud perpetrated across the globe by Chinese gangs. Darji operated the 46-member gang from Dubai. Eleven of them have been arrested by Surat police so far. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Bhavesh Roziya told TOI: "This is probably the first case of a cybercrime gang in which GujCTOC has been invoked. From the scale of the crime and the large number of offenders involved, it was necessary to use this law which targets organized crime. GujCTOC makes it difficult for cybercriminals to get out of jail easily and perpetrate more cybercrimes." Sweta Daniels, assistant commissioner of police (ACP crime), told TOI: "We registered an offence of cyberfraud in Oct, where Milan Darji was the prime accused and was running the racket from Dubai. We found 46 gang members were involved in the racket. There were 1,029 bank accounts involved and transactions worth Rs 197 crore were made. The NCCRP portal showed 1,867 complaints and 214 cyberfraud FIRs where these 1,029 bank accounts were listed. Over the past few months, we arrested 11 of the 46 gang members and booked them under GujCTOC." Those arrested and booked under GujCTOC are Ajay Italiya, Jalpesh Nadiyadara, Vishal Thummar, Hiren Barwaliya, Brijesh Italiya, Ketan Vekariya, Nanjibhai Baraiya, Heet Jasani, Chandres Kakadiya, Dashrath Dhandhaliya and Anil Kheni. The gang leader, Milan Darji, is absconding along with 35 others who are accused in various FIRs. The gang would withdraw cash from Indian banks that have branches in Dubai and convert it into the cryptocurrency USDT to transfer to Chinese gangs.

Odhav radiologist arrested in Bavla female feticide racket

1 2 TAKE LOGO: Save the girl child Ahmedabad: A radiologist from Odhav was arrested on Tuesday, allegedly, for his involvement in a female feticide racket busted at a guesthouse in Bavla on Monday evening. Ahmedabad rural police identified the accused as 58-year-old Harshad Acharya, who, along with his wife, ran Ashirwad Imaging Centre in Soni Chawl in Odhav. A former nurse, Hemlata Darji from Bavla, was the first arrest made in this case on Monday. "Acharya was in constant touch with Darji. For each abortion, Acharya paid her around Rs 10,000," said a police officer. As one enters the clinic of Acharya, a leading radiologist in Odhav, the first thing one comes across is a poster announces in English: 'No sex determination test is done here'. Another large poster reiterates the point in Gujarati: 'Ahiyan babo chhe ke baby kahevama aavtu nathi (We do not reveal if the foetus is a boy or a girl)'. However, sources privy to the development said that Acharya had a coded reply to reveal the baby's gender to the people. "If he says 'aashirwad (blessings)' with a smile, then it is a boy, and if he says 'theek thai jashe (everything will become alright)' with a serious look, then it is a girl. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Bosnia And Herzegovina (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo Later, Hemlata would approach these patients and organise the pregnancy termination," said a source. Police confirmed that at least five female feticides were performed in around eight months. "We suspect there might be more," said the officer. The senior officer also did not rule out the involvement of other doctors or radiologists. "The names, if any, will come to light as the investigation progresses," the officer added. Ahmedabad rural police on Tuesday busted an abortion racket linked to female feticide, operating out of a guesthouse in Bavla area of Ahmedabad district on Monday. The raid was conducted based on specific intelligence and executed with the help of local health department officials. Cops are trying to find out if facilities of other guesthouses or hotels were used for this illegal act of pregnancy termination. Darji, 40, was found performing abortions without any valid medical qualifications on Monday evening, police sources said. She worked as a nurse for more than a decade in private hospitals across Bavla and Dholka. Using the experience gained, she allegedly carried out unauthorised pregnancy terminations. Bavla police on Tuesday registered an FIR against Acharya under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act. The investigation will include tracing the accused's network, examining financial records, and identifying sonography centres that may have been involved in illegal sex determination.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This machine, called a strong motion accelerograph, was a model from 2007. The police complaint was filed by Bihari Darji, a technical assistant employed at Arm Management Service, which holds a contract with the Institute of Seismological Research based in Raisan, Gandhinagar, to maintain and install new instruments. The equipment was the property of the institute. According to Darji's statement to police, he and his colleagues visited the earthquake research centre at Ishwariya Park, Rajkot, on March 4 to set up new equipment.
