Thousands rally in Serbia's capital demanding snap elections after months of protests

University students and people march during a protest, seven months after the deadly train station tragedy that sparked mass demonstrations against corruption in Belgrade, Serbia, Friday, May 30, 2025. (AP Photo/Darko Vojinovic) Thousands of people rallied on Friday in Serbia's capital demanding early elections following seven months of persistent anti-corruption protests that have shaken the populist rule of President Aleksandar Vucic. The protest in Belgrade was organized by Serbia's university students, who have been a key force behind the nationwide demonstrations triggered by a collapse on Nov. 1 of a concrete train station canopy in the country's north that killed 16 people. Many people in Serbia believe that the deadly crash was the result of flawed renovation work on the station building, and they link the disaster to alleged government corruption in major infrastructure projects with Chinese state companies. Protesting university students have been demanding accountability for the crash and the rule of law in Serbia, a Balkan nation that is formally seeking European Union entry but where the ruling populists have been accused of clamping down on democratic freedoms. After months-long protests drawing hundreds of thousands of people, the student movement is now seeking a snap vote, arguing that the current government cannot meet their demands for justice for the crash victims. Presidential and parliamentary elections are otherwise due some time in 2027. Vucic, whom critics accuse of an increasingly authoritarian rule despite the proclaimed EU bid, initially dismissed early elections but on Friday suggested they may be held, though without saying exactly when. No one has been sentenced in connection with the tragedy in the northern city of Novi Sad. Authorities have indicted over a dozen people but doubts prevail that the proceedings will uncover the alleged corruption behind the crash. A huge, noisy column of protesters in Belgrade marched by the state prosecutor's offices before reaching the government building. They carried a big banner urging elections. Maja Rancic said she was hopeful the protests can bring about changes: 'I really hope and wish, and I think it will happen.' Vucic's government has stepped up pressure on the protesting students and Serbia's universities, claiming without proof that they were instructed by foreign powers to stage a revolution in the country. Students are planning more protests all over the country this weekend. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. (AP Photo/Darko Vojinovic) Ukraine great Andrii Shevchenko failed to win election to the UEFA executive committee on Thursday, the day Russia formally ceded its seat on the decision-making body of European soccer. Shevchenko, the former AC Milan star and 2004 Ballon d'Or winner, got just 15 votes from the 55 national federations as one of five candidates for two vacant seats through 2027 on the UEFA ruling committee. Advertisement Those two seats were previously held by officials elected from Ukraine and Spain — Shevchenko's predecessor leading the national federation, Andrii Pavelko, and disgraced former UEFA vice president Luis Rubiales. Though Spain retained its seat, with Rafael Louzán getting 32 votes, Ukraine's old seat went to Israel, whose federation president Moshe Zuares got 31 votes. At the 2024 UEFA congress in Paris, Ukraine was among a handful of member federations who did not fully support a vote allowing UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin to extend his time in office to 2027. Russia lost its seat on the 22-member UEFA ExCo because its most senior soccer official, Alexander Dyukov, the chief executive of Russian oil firm Gazprom Neft, did not stand as a candidate to retain his place for the next four years. Advertisement A key pending issue for UEFA is when and how to reintegrate Russia teams into international competitions and end a ban imposed within days of the military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In 2022, UEFA and FIFA successfully argued at the Court of Arbitration for Sport that continuing to let Russian teams play would invite chaos in their competitions when some countries in Europe refused to play opponents from the country. Before the voting on Thursday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino told European soccer officials in a keynote speech he hoped Russia would soon be back in international soccer. 'Because this would mean that everything is solved' with peace in the war, Infantino said. Advertisement In a separate election for UEFA ExCo seats with four-year mandates, candidates from Estonia and Armenia won. UEFA also now has a second woman on the ruling committee, electing Norwegian soccer president Lise Klaveness by acclamation to a new seat protected for female candidates. ___ AP soccer:

(AP Photo/Manu Fernandez) GENEVA (AP) — Champions League winner Real Madrid topped the prize money list last season by getting almost 139 million euros ($154 million), UEFA said on Thursday, finally confirming the payments. Madrid's money came from a total competition prize fund of more than 2 billion euros ($2.22 billion) that rises by 25% this season in the new and expanded format with more teams and more games. Advertisement UEFA's formula to pay clubs included Madrid getting more than 36 million euros ($40 million) as the top-ranked club preseason, but just 14 million euros ($15.5 million) as a share of income from broadcast rights deals. Paris Saint-Germain was the second biggest earner — despite being eliminated in the semifinals — with 122.4 million ($135.7 million). That included 34 million euros ($37.7 million) from TV money with the French rights deal shared with Lens as the only two French teams in the group stage. Borussia Dortmund, the beaten finalist, just edged Bayern Munich with both getting more than 120 million euros ($133 million). German broadcast money was shared among four teams. In the second-tier Europa League, beaten finalist Bayer Leverkusen got the highest payment of 41.2 million euros ($45.7 million). Title winner Atalanta got almost 34 million euros ($37.7 million). Advertisement Liverpool, which was beaten by Atalanta in the quarterfinals, earned less than 27 million euros ($30 million) from UEFA. Manchester City earned 110.5 million euros ($122.5 million) from reaching the Champions League quarterfinals as the defending champion. An extra 4.5 million euros ($5 million) was earned playing in the season-opening Super Cup against Sevilla, winner of the 2023 Europa League. Barcelona got just 98 million euros ($108.6 million) for reaching the Champions League quarterfinals in another financially challenging year for the club, which has had issues registering players this season. Manchester United was paid less than 61 million euros ($67.6 million) by UEFA for placing last in its group, and Newcastle got 34 million euros ($37.7 million) including less than 5 million euros ($5.5 million) from the club ranking payments. Advertisement The smallest sum was less than 22 million euros ($24.4 million) paid to Belgian champion Royal Antwerp, the lowest-ranked team. UEFA also paid 25 million euros ($27.7 million) to the European Club Association, led by PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi, which represents hundreds of clubs and helps manage the competition's commercial strategy in a joint venture. The payments were detailed in UEFA's financial report published during its annual meeting being held in the Serbian capital Belgrade. ___ AP soccer:
