Kerry SFL round-up: Austin Stacks secure Division 1 title in dramatic style

There was a bizarre finish to the Kerry Senior Football Leagues this weekend as both the top two sides in Division 1 failed to win their final encounters. However, despite Kerins O'Rahillys not losing to Glenbeigh/Glencar on Sunday lunchtime, they could not get the win they needed to force a playoff with Tralee rivals Austin Stacks, who won the Division 1 title for the first time since 2014 even though they lost on Saturday evening to Laune Rangers. It is also new manager Darragh Long's first trophy with the club, but it is reasonable to assume that he probably thought that it might require another meeting with their cross town Tralee rivals as Kerins O'Rahilly's were short odds to beat already relegated Glenbeigh/Glencar on Sunday. The loss to the side they beat in the Intermediate Club final in the Kingdom last year looked like opening the door for Strand Road to set up another meeting between the two sides, so soon after Stacks had defeated them in the previous round and seemingly put one hand on the winners' shield. O'Rahillys, who were missing a few regulars, were 10 points up at half-time to Glenbeigh/Glencar but they struggled in the second-half with the Mid Kerry side putting over four two-pointers as the match ended level at 2-12 to 0-18 with Darragh O'Connor and Odhran Kerins getting the goals. Stacks, meanwhile, only scored twice from play in losing by 2-12 to 0-12 to Laune Rangers as Patrick Daly and Daire Cleary scored the goals that meant Liam Hassett's side had done their best to try and extend their two-year stay in the Kingdom's top League. Fellow Mid Kerry side Beaufort's 4-17 to 1-23 win over Kilcummin denied them their best chance of staying up but there was still a chance for the Killorglin side later in the evening if Glenflesk won an East Kerry derby with Spa, which would have meant a playoff between Spa and Rangers. Spa secured their status though with a 2-18 to 1-14 win meaning Rangers will join Ballymacelligott and Glenbeigh/Glencar in Division 2 next year. Dr Crokes had begun the weekend with a 1-14 to 1-10 win away to Ballymac as fellow East Kerry sides Killarney Legion and Rathmore played out a 1-14 apiece draw. Meanwhile Kenmare Shamrocks will be going back to Division 1 as Division 2 winners after drawing their final game with An Ghaeltacht by 0-17 to 3-8 as Dingle were confirmed as runners-up after receiving a walkover from already relegated Ardfert for their final game. The final promotion spot will go to a playoff between Milltown/Castlemaine and Gneeveguilla after the Mid Kerry side defeated Templenoe by 3-19 to 0-16 while the East Kerry side edged out Churchill by 2-11 to 0-16, sending the St Brendans side back down to Division 3. Keel and Listowel Emmets escaped relegation with wins over Firies and Fossa respectively while Fossa will be going back down to Division 3, alongside Churchill and Ardfert. John Mitchels claimed the Division 3 title with a 2-16 to 2-13 win over Castlegregory as Castleisland Desmonds and St Marys had already been promoted alongside them prior to the final round. Castlegregory will be one of five teams involved in a lengthy relegation process, along with Tarbert, St Senans, Cordal, and Ballydonoghue to see who will join Brosna and Reenard in Division 4 next year. Annascaul (winners), Duagh and Currow were already promoted prior to the final day in Division 4 as both Ballyduff and Dromid Pearses will playoff to avoid joining Knocknagoshel and St Pats/Blennerville in Division 5 next year.

Trade unions to mark International Workers' Day on May Day

Trade unions will mark May Day today which is celebrated as International Workers' Day. A series of events will take place beginning with a meeting of union leaders at Fórsa headquarters for a seminar on the minimum wage. The rate has increased repeatedly in recent years but unions have accused the Government of trying to row back on future commitments. Amid concerns about high business costs, a plan to replace the minimum wage with a new living wage has been delayed by three years to 2029, and a decision on whether to abolish youth sub-minimum rates has been deferred. On International Workers' Day, the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) has called for the immediate abolition of sub-minimum rates of pay. "Today, we're highlighting the urgent need to address the ongoing issue of inadequate pay, which continues to undermine the living standards of ordinary people, already crippled by a cost of living crisis," said Kathryn Walsh, NYCI Director of Policy and Advocacy. The Department of Enterprise has said that it remains committed to fair wages for all workers and has highlighted substantial increases in the minimum wage in recent years that have seen real increases in lower paid workers' wages. May Day rally This evening, the Dublin Council of Trade Unions will hold its annual May Day rally at the Garden of Remembrance which will be followed by a march to Liberty Hall. It will include an open top bus representing SIPTU's Respect Transport Workers campaign which is calling for the establishment of a transport policing service to counteract anti-social behaviour on the public transport network. "May Day is a date for celebrating the victories of the organised workers' movement such as paid holidays, pension provision and sick pay," said SIPTU Head of Strategic Organising and Campaigns, Darragh O'Connor.

Fadera off the mark with first professional goal for City loanee

MO Fadera had a weekend to remember after scoring a first goal in professional football. The York City youngster, who is currently on loan at National League North team Scunthorpe United, sealed the Iron's 2-0 victory over Warrington Town after Danny Whitehall had fired them ahead on the hour mark. Fadera had started on the bench, but replaced Whitehall in the 74th minute, scoring his first just eight minutes later. The 20-year-old excellently beat the offside trap before rounding goalkeeper Dan Atherton and slotting home, into the empty net. Darragh O'Connor also had something to celebrate at the weekend - with a first appearance for Falkirk. Having joined the Scottish Championship side at the beginning of January, O'Connor has had to bide his time in waiting for first minutes for Falkirk. However, the centre-back was given an opportunity when coming off of the bench in their 5-2 win over Partick Thistle. A hat-trick for Scott Arfield aided Falkirk in their win, with O'Connor replacing Coll Donaldson in the 72nd minute. Debut ✅ 3 points ✅ Bruce's first time at the beach ✅ — Darragh O'Connor (@DarraghOConnor1) February 9, 2025 Olly Dyson followed Fadera in registering a goal at the weekend, opening the scoring in the 16th minute for Spennymoor Town against Hereford and Levi Andoh. Dyson scored from a well-taken free-kick from the left, that managed to find its way through to the far corner. The three points was sealed for the Moors as Glen Taylor, on his 200th appearance, scored a second for a 2-0 win. Andoh however did not come off of the bench in the fixture. Thierry Latty-Fairweather started for Maidenhead United in their impressive 1-0 victory over Southend United. Will De Havilland's 56th minute strike was the difference between the two sides, with Latty-Fairweather playing 90 minutes He would be replaced by Owen Cochrane in the 90th minute, as the Magpies saw out a clean sheet. Leone Gravata was also in action for Chippenham Town, starting in their 4-2 defeat to Hemel Hempstead. A Brandon Barzey brace, an own goal from Jac Poffley and a goal from Eoin McKeown had given Hemel the upper hand in the match, despite goals from Hamzad Kargbo and Matt McClure. Luke Spokes' red card meant that Chippenham ended the match with ten men, with Gravata playing 73 minutes before being substituted off. Kidderminster Harriers played Chorley at Aggborough, but were left empty-handed with a 2-1 defeat. Maz Kouhyar came off of the bench in the 57th minute to replace Ryley Reynolds, but was unable to change around the Harriers' fortunes. Tyler Cordner was not in action again this weekend as Ebbsfleet United drew 0-0 with Rochdale, as he continues to recover from an injury.
