Sir Alex Ferguson spotted in Cardiff stands next to former Man Utd player who never made an appearance

SIR ALEX FERGUSON was spotted watching Peterborough's season opener against Cardiff - joined by a former Manchester United player. Ferguson's was supporting his son Darren - who is in charge at Peterborough. And he was joined in the stands by Barry Fry - who came through United's academy without making a senior appearance. Sky Sports commentator Daniel Mann said: "I'm sure we're all excited to see Sir Alex here. "Another fellow former Manchester United man there in Barry Fry, who had four years there as a young player." Ferguson and Fry watched as Cardiff won the game 2-1. Fry had a storied 12-year playing career with the likes of Bolton, Luton and Leyton Orient. He finished as a player at St Albans City in 1974 and went into coaching. Fry managed Barnet, Southend, Birmingham and Peterborough - his most lengthy coaching spell between 1996-2005. He briefly returned to the Posh's dugout as joint caretaker boss before taking the role as director of football. But he was banned in 2019 for four-months for breaching an FA betting rule but later returned to his role that year. Ferugson's son Darren - who played for Peterborough for a year before retiring in 2008 - has twice managed the club. He spent three seasons from 2019 but left before making a return one year later in 2023. He kept the club up last season - finishing 18th in League One. 2

Colwill cracker leads youthful Cardiff back for victory over Peterborough

New skipper Rubin Colwill inspired a 2-1 comeback win for Cardiff City over Peterborough. Sir Alex Ferguson was in the stands at the Cardiff City Stadium to support his son Darren, who saw his Peterborough team go into the break 1-0 ahead. New boss Brian Barry-Murphy turned out the youngest team selected by any Cardiff manager this century but saw Posh draw first blood in the 33rd minute when Brad Ihionvien stepped up to coolly convert from the penalty spot after Will Fish had barged Declan Firth in the box. Cardiff, led for the first time by 23-year-old Colwill, earned their stripes in the second half of their first game in the third tier of English football in 22 years. The skipper led the way with a wonderful free-kick from 25 yards three minutes after the restart, and then 18-year-old Ronan Kpakio hammered home his first senior goal to grab the lead on the hour mark. The visitors had a chance to level at the death, but Matt Turner made a brilliant save from Gustav Lindgren to save the day. Peterborough sign Walsall defender Okagbue

Peterborough United have signed Walsall centre-back David Okagbue for an undisclosed fee. The 21-year-old has agreed a four-year deal with Posh after making 54 appearances for the Saddlers last season and scoring two goals. Okagbue is Peterborough's sixth summer signing as they look to improve on last season's disappointing 18th-place finish in League One. "He is at a good age with lots of room for improvement and development. What he will add is pace and physicality to our defensive unit, which is something that I was looking for," said boss Darren Ferguson. Okagbue began his career at Stoke City and had loans spells with Oldham and Walsall before joining the latter on a permanent basis last summer. "I have had two seasons with Walsall and played a lot of games. I felt the time was right to step into League One," he said. Find all the latest football transfers on our dedicated page
