‘Chicago Fire' cast changes: See who's returning and who's not

Season 14 of 'Chicago Fire' premieres on NBC on Wednesday, October 1, but some cast members aren't returning to the procedural drama. Daniel Kyri, who plays Darren Ritter, will have only a limited role in the upcoming season. He penned an emotional goodbye message after shooting his final episode. 'Yesterday, I filmed my last scenes as Ritter & I'm still so amazed that my first-ever TV gig — a role that was originally meant for just three episodes — turned into seven incredible years (SEVEN?!?!! Whatttt???!) and spanned eight seasons of this iconic show,' he wrote via Instagram on Thursday, August 14. 'While I know I may never find another cast and crew as amazing as this one, I intend to carry what I've learned from you to every set in the future.' Kyri added that he 'can't wait' for fans to see what's in store for Ritter this season. He began playing the character during season 7 of 'Chicago Fire.' Jake Lockett, who has played Sam Carver since season 11, was also written out of season 14. 'While I don't exactly know what the future looks like, I do know that it won't be exactly what it was and I am going to miss the hell out of that. So much pride in this journey,' Lockett wrote via Instagram in April when his departure was announced. 'It's been an honor bringing Sam to life and to every one of you, thank you for the love and support over the past three years.' Although TVInsider reported that the cast exits were due to budget cuts, 'Chicago Fire' is bringing a newbie onboard for season 14. Brandon Larracuente is joining the cast as firefighter Sal Vasqez. 'Chicago Fire' showrunner Andrea Newman told TVInsider that the new character is 'charming' and has a rich 'family history in the first responder world, much of it buried.' As for the returning cast, Taylor Kinney (Kelly Severide), Miranda Rae Mayo (Stella Kidd) and Dermot Mulroney (Dom Pascal) have all signed on to season 14. David Eigenberg (Christopher Herrmann), Joe Minoso (Joe Cruz), Jocelyn Hudon (Lizzie Novak), Hanako Greensmith (Violet Mikami), and Christian Stolte (Mouch McHolland) are also expected to reprise their roles. Chicago Fire's Daniel Kyri Returning for ‘Limited Time' in Season 14 — Get Details

Surprise! Firehouse 51 isn't saying goodbye to Darren Ritter just yet. Daniel Kyri, who exited Chicago Fire as a series regular along with Jake Lockett at the end of Season 13, has shared that he'll return in Season 14 as Ritter, albeit briefly. For a limited time only,' he wrote on his Instagram story along with a behind-the-scenes photo. (See below.) TVLine has reached out to NBC for comment. Ritter was not formally written out of the series at the end of Season 13, presumably leaving the door open for Kyri to return and wrap up his character's storyline. Back in May, showrunner Andrew Newman told TVLine that they didn't have a set plan for addressing his departure, but that there were 'lots of possibilities there.' 'We're going to play with all this and see what we get and how much time we get with Daniel, who we love, and the character, who we love,' she said. The Season 13 finale did hint at CFD layoffs, which Newman acknowledged as a potential explanation for some character exits. The layoffs twist 'wasn't even done intentionally for that, but because it's so in the zeitgeist, people coming in and gutting departments and gutting places, it's very real to the CFD.' 'We're going to have a lot of turnover,' Newman added, 'and a lot craziness going on in the CFD from the top, where people are being cut and moved, and everything's going to get shaken up next season.' Exiting Chicago Fire Star Daniel Kyri Says Emotional Goodbye to His Character Darren Ritter: ‘You Made History'

Just days after sharing behind-the-scenes shots of his 'limited' Chicago Fire return, Daniel Kyri is now officially saying goodbye to the NBC series. 'I filmed my last scenes as [Darren] Ritter [and] I'm still so amazed that my first-ever TV gig — a role that was originally meant for just three episodes — turned into seven incredible years (SEVEN?!?!! Whatttt???!) and spanned eight seasons of this iconic show!' Kyri wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. 'While I know I may never find another cast and crew as amazing as this one, I intend to carry what I've learned from you to every set in the future.' He also thanked fans for embracing and celebrating Ritter 'for every aspect of his humanity.' He ended his emotional farewell by paying tribute to his character: 'Chicago Fire changed my life. Bringing Darren Ritter to the screen has transformed [and] healed me in equal measure. He is a man who embodies empathy, humility, compassion, and unwavering bravery to save lives. His heroism is further fortified by the way he navigates the world — a gay Black firefighter who is proud, fierce, loyal [and] whole — a possibility I never got to see onscreen in my childhood but desperately craved… I am so humbled [and] proud to have portrayed you. I'm thrilled that my inner child would have looked at you each week in awe of everything you represent. You made history. Thank you so much, Darren Ritter. And goodbye.' It was first revealed in May that Kyri and fellow series regular Jake Lockett would be leaving the drama ahead of Season 14. But Ritter was not formally written out of the series in the Season 13 finale, which left the door open for Kyri to return and wrap up his character's storyline.
