Penang cargo firm manager loses RM693,000 to Facebook investment scam promising 100pc return
GEORGE TOWN, July 10 — The manager of a cargo company in Penang lost RM693,000 after falling victim to an investment syndicate that offered a 100 per cent profit. Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the Barat Daya district police headquarters received a police report from the 70-year-old local man on Tuesday. 'According to the victim, in early March, he saw an investment advertisement via Facebook and clicked on a link before a female suspect began providing him with information regarding an 'Industrial Securities International' investment via WhatsApp. 'The victim was promised a profit of 100 per cent from the capital invested within 48 hours, and from June 4 to July 3, the man paid 12 transactions to five different bank accounts,' he said in a statement yesterday. He said the man finally realised it was a fraud syndicate when he did not receive the promised profit, as the suspect even asked him for more payments before he could make a withdrawal. According to Mohd Alwi, further investigations are underway, including tracing the fraud syndicate network, while the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama

Cops suspect gang link in Penang school drive-by shooting but victim denies knowing gunmen
SEBERANG PERAI, July 3 — A man who escaped unhurt in a shooting incident on Tuesday had reclined his seat when he saw a motorcycle heading towards his vehicle, said Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin. He said the man had already reclined his seat halfway while waiting to pick up his child in his four-wheel drive outside a primary school in Sungai Nyior. 'The man said he saw a motorcycle speeding towards his vehicle and immediately reclined the seat until it was fully flat. 'That's when the two suspects on the motorcycle opened fire, but the bullets missed him,' he said. 'Police are currently conducting further investigations, and we do not rule out the possibility that the victim knew the two men who shot at his vehicle, even though he denies it,' Mohd Alwi said when met at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Batu Kawan Market at Bandar Cassia. He said the man, in his 40s, is a businessman with four prior criminal records. Police are also not ruling out links to gangsterism. Initial investigations revealed that the man was previously a gang member but is no longer involved in such activities, he said. 'We have formed a task force to carry out a detailed investigation into the case, including efforts to track down the two men who fired the shots,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 and Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder. Mohd Alwi assured the public that although the incident took place in front of a school, the situation remains under control. 'We have increased security measures,' he said. In the 5.40pm incident on Tuesday, two suspects on a motorcycle fired five shots at the man's front window while he was waiting for his child outside SK Sungai Nyior. The man was not injured.

Ex-programme manager in Penang loses RM436,000 in fake IPO scam promoted on WhatsApp, police tracking syndicate
GEORGE TOWN, June 29 — A 62-year-old retired airline programme manager recently lost RM436,000 of her life savings after falling victim to an online investment scam involving fake initial public offering (IPO). Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the woman lodged a report with the Timur Laut Commercial Crime Investigation Division after discovering she had been deceived by a fraudulent scheme. The scam was promoted through a WhatsApp group called 'enspire capital', which promised high-returns through IPO investments. The victim was instructed to download an app named 'freeman plus' as the investment platform. 'Between May 12 and June 2, she made 56 fund transfers to four different company accounts. Despite the promises, she received no returns. Instead, the suspects kept requesting additional payments,' he said in a statement last night. Investigations found the victim used her personal and Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings to finance the so-called investments. Mohd Alwi said efforts are ongoing to identify and track down the syndicate responsible. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama
