Check out some of the companies making the biggest moves midday: UnitedHealth — The health insurer rallied 13% after Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway revealed a stake of five million shares, worth about $1.6 billion. The "Big Short" investor Michael Burry and Appaloosa Management's David Tepper also disclosed sizable stakes in the company. If the UNH gains hold through the end of the session, it will mark the stock's best day in five years. Applied Materials — The semiconductor equipment manufacturer plunged 13% after the company's current-quarter outlook trailed estimates from analysts polled by LSEG. Applied Materials' fiscal third-quarter earnings and revenue topped Wall Street expectations. Intel — Intel climbed more than 3% in early trading Friday, adding to Thursday's 7% gain. The chipmaker jumped after Bloomberg reported that the Trump administration is in talks to buy a stake in Intel , which would help fund factories Intel is building in Ohio. Cisco Systems — The networking equipment maker dropped 3% after HSBC downgraded Cisco to hold from buy and lowered its 12-month price target . The bank cited lukewarm quarterly results from Cisco earlier this week, saying that "though the company reported more than $2bn of AI infrastructure orders in FY25, strength seems to be getting offset by weakness elsewhere." Sandisk — The data storage provider lost nearly 11% after Sandisk said fourth-quarter non-GAAP gross margin dropped to 26.4% from 36.4% a year ago. Twilio — The cloud-based communications software developer will join the S & P MidCap 400 index before the start of trading on Tuesday August 19, S & P Dow Jones Indices said , following the removal of Amedisys after its acquisition by UnitedHealth Group. Twilio climbed 5% Friday. Evolv Technologies — The maker of AI-based security screening products jumped 16% after its second-quarter loss narrowed and it said the Justice Department had ended its investigation into the company. In reaction, Evolv was upgraded to buy from hold at Lake Street and reinstated as a buy at TD Cowen. Flowers Foods — The maker of Nature's Own and Dave's Killer Bread fell more than 4% after second-quarter revenue and adjusted EBITDA trailed Wall Street estimates, and it lowered the company's full-year earnings per share guidance from a prior forecast, according to FactSet. Opendoor Technologies — The real estate company popped 10% after saying CEO and Chair Carrie Wheeler left the company. Opendoor said a "CEO succession planning process" began in mid-2025, and executive search firm Spencer Stuart is aiding in the process of hiring a new CEO. Wingstop — The chicken wing chain rose more than 4% after a Raymond James upgrade to strong buy from outperform. The investment bank pointed to Wingstop's attractive valuation and its AI-powered Smart Kitchen systems as catalysts for the rating change. Roblox — The stock dropped more than 7% after Louisiana's attorney general sued the video game company for allegedly enabling child predators on its platform. Flowers Foods lowers guidance as category pressures impact sales

US baked goods producer Flowers Foods has lowered its full-year outlook as category pressures weighed on first-quarter sales. Ryals McMullian, the chairman and CEO of Flowers Foods, said the quarter was marked by 'economic uncertainty and greater than expected category declines'. The company is investing in 'on-trend innovation' targeting 'faster-growing categories' as an offset, he said, noting the entry of the company's Dave's Killer Bread brand into snacking and the recent acquisition of Simple Mills, a US-based biscuit and snack-bar maker. Nature's Own brand owner Flowers Foods has forecast net sales of $5.29bn to $5.39bn, reflecting 3.8% to 5.7% growth over the previous year. Earlier guidance projected net sales of $5.40bn to $5.49bn, indicating a 5.9% to 7.5% year-on-year growth. In January, Flowers Foods expanded its snack portfolio by acquiring Simple Mills for $795m. Excluding that acquisition, net sales for fiscal 2025 are expected to be between $5.08bn and $5.17bn, representing a decline of 0.5% to growth of 1.3%. The previous guidance, excluding Simple Mills, estimated net sales of $5.18bn to $5.26bn, or growth of 1.5% to 3%. Adjusted EBITDA is projected to range from $534m to $562m, compared to the previous estimate of $560m to $591m. Without the Simple Mills acquisition, adjusted EBITDA is expected to be $504m to $529m, down from the prior guidance of $526m to $554m. Adjusted diluted EPS is now projected at $1.05 to $1.15, compared to the earlier estimate of $1.11 to $1.24. Net sales for the quarter ended 19 April dropped to $1.55bn, and net income fell 27.4% to $52.9m. Adjusted EBITDA climbed 1.6% to $162m, while the margin fell 30 basis points to 10.4%. Diluted EPS dipped by $0.09 to $0.25. Simple Mills added $24.3m in net sales along with a net loss of $4.2m, affecting diluted EPS by -$0.02. First Quarter Summary: Compared to the prior year first quarter where applicable Net sales(1) decreased 1.4% to $1.554 billion as the Simple Mills acquisition benefit was more than offset by pricing/mix and volume declines. Net income decreased 27.4% to $53.0 million, representing 3.4% of sales, a 120-basis point decrease, primarily due to reduced sales, higher SD&A expense, and higher interest expense, partly offset by moderating ingredient costs. Adjusted net income(2) decreased 8.2% to $73.7 million. Adjusted EBITDA(2) increased 1.6% to $162.0 million, representing 10.4% of net sales, a 30-basis point increase. Diluted EPS decreased $0.09 to $0.25. Adjusted diluted EPS(2) decreased $0.03 to $0.35. Pricing/mix(4) decreased 0.3%, volume(5) declined 2.7%, and the Simple Mills acquisition added 1.6%. Branded Retail net sales decreased $3.9 million, or 0.4%, to $1.011 billion due to volume declines and unfavorable price/mix resulting from increased promotional activity, partially offset by the acquisition contribution. Pricing/mix(4) declined 0.9%, volume(5) decreased 1.9%, and the Simple Mills acquisition contributed 2.4%. Other net sales decreased $18.7 million, or 3.3%, to $543.0 million due to inflationary pressure on consumer spending and from executing our non-retail margin optimization strategies. Pricing/mix(4) rose 0.4% and volume(5) declined 3.7%. Materials, supplies, labor, and other production costs (exclusive of depreciation and amortization) were 50.1% of net sales, a 50-basis point decrease. These costs decreased as a percentage of net sales mostly due to moderating ingredient costs. Lower production volumes, higher workforce-related costs, and increased outside purchases of product (sales with no associated ingredient costs) partially offset the overall improvement. Selling, distribution, and administrative (SD&A) expenses were 40.8% of net sales, a 110-basis point increase. SD&A expenses increased as a percentage of net sales due to higher workforce-related costs, acquisition-related costs, and vehicle rent expense. These items were partially offset by lower distributor distribution fees, benefits of cost savings programs implemented subsequent to the first quarter of the prior year, and lower incentive compensation costs. Excluding matters affecting comparability, adjusted SD&A(2) was 39.5% of net sales, a 20 basis point increase. Plant closure costs and impairment of assets increased $3.4 million, related to the closure of a bakery in the first quarter.
