Boost users are now able to make cross-border QR payments in China at Weixin Pay (known as WeChat Pay outside of China) merchants throughout the country.
This means that Malaysian travellers visiting China will not be required to install any of the local e-wallet provider apps in order to perform cashless payments during their trip.
However, support for UnionPay will first need to be enabled in the app beforehand, which can be done by navigating to the "Payment Services" page in the app.
Users should take note that the option to enable UnionPay support will only be available to those who have upgraded to a Premium 10k account.
This would require them to perform an eKYC verification using their MyKad or passport, along with providing other personal particulars. For more information on upgrading to a Premium 10k wallet, users can visit the Boost support page.
This comes as part of the e-wallet's newly announced integration with the payment network UnionPay, which also includes other merchants on the network in Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Cambodia, South Korea, Australia, and other countries.
