IBM (IBM) Bets Big on AI and Mainframes to Jumpstart a New Growth Era
IBM (IBM, Financials) is doubling down on artificial intelligence and mainframes as it looks to boost margins and reignite growth, according to Stifel analyst David Grossman, who came away positive after attending the company's investor event. The tech giant is rolling out AI tools across its own operations to cut costs and increase efficiency. That could mean more room in the budget for research, marketing, and acquisitionsareas IBM has struggled to fund in the past. One internal tool, watsonx Orchestrate, is being prepped for a broader commercial launch. If successful, it could become a key productivity product for enterprise clients and open new revenue streams. IBM is also gearing up for the z17 mainframe launch. The company sees it as a chance to bring back customers that shifted to x86 servers or the cloud. Down the line, it may even offer mainframe access as a service. While IBM is clearly leaning more into growth, Grossman said it will likely continue to be seen as a steady, defensive pick in the short run. Investors will be watching how quickly IBM can turn internal innovation into commercial wins and whether the mainframe refresh delivers. This article first appeared on GuruFocus. 350 Israeli authors call for end to Gaza war
Around 350 Israeli authors have signed a letter calling for an end to the devastating war in Gaza, the Times of Israel newspaper reported on Tuesday. The signatories include well-known writers such as David Grossman, Joshua Sobol and Zeruya Shalev. "This war endangers the lives of IDF soldiers, of the hostages, and causes horrific suffering for helpless civilians in Gaza," the letter says. "The acts being committed in Gaza and the occupied territories are not done in our name, but they will be on our account." The signatories call for an immediate end to the military operation against the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement, the return of the hostages abducted to the Gaza Strip and an international agreement on the future of the Gaza Strip. The authors accuse Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of continuing the war for personal reasons. There have been several similar calls from within the ranks of the military demanding an end to the war and an agreement with Hamas on the release of the hostages. The Gaza war was triggered by the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel led by Hamas and other extremist groups, in which around 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 Israelis were taken hostage and held in the Gaza Strip. Since then, according to the health authority in the Gaza Strip, around 51,000 people have been killed, a large proportion of them women and minors. The information, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians, cannot be independently verified. Israel has spoken of around 20,000 terrorists killed.

Can you solve it? That's numberwang!
Today, we're down with the digits. Here are three elegant number puzzles, each nudging your brain to think creatively in different ways. 1. Well balanced What number equals the average of its digits? 2. The painted cube A large wooden cube is painted on all of its faces. I divide the cube into a thousand mini cubes by slicing it nine times in each dimension. How many cubes have no paint on them? The bad way to calculate the answer is to start with 1000 cubes and subtract the ones with paint: 100 x 2 from the first set of opposing faces, 80 x 2 from what's left of the next two opposing faces and 64 x 2 from what's left of the remaining two faces. The puzzle is to find a much faster way to get a solution. It involves a simpler calculation that you are more likely to be able to do in your head. 3. Clever countdown You are playing a game with a friend, in which you start at the number 100 and take turns to deduct a number between 1 and 7. The winner is the person that lands on zero. Which number do you choose first to be assured of winning? I'll be back at 5pm UK with the solutions. PLEASE NO SPOILERS. Share your favourite numbers. Thanks to these readers for suggesting today's questions: 1. David Grossman 2. Richard Connor, professor of computer science at the University of St Andrews (who said it is his favourite puzzle). 3. Chris Eddlestone (who remembers it from his Oxbridge interview.) I've been setting a puzzle here on alternate Mondays since 2015. I'm always on the look-out for great puzzles. If you would like to suggest one, email me.
