Verizon's prepaid brands are battling for your attention with new price cuts and offers

Graduates heading off to new apartments or cities this summer have one less thing to stress about – staying connected. Total Wireless, backed by Verizon's 5G network, is making that part easy and affordable. Starting May 28, customers on any mobile plan from any of Verizon 's Value Brands – Total Wireless, Straight Talk Wireless, Tracfone, Simple Mobile, Walmart Family Mobile, Visible, or Verizon Prepaid – can snag a $15/month discount on Verizon Fios Home Internet when they bundle. That is up to $180 saved per year and if you stack it with Auto Pay, the savings jump to $300 annually. Total Wireless is also trying to sweeten the deal even more. It is offering up to $500 in credit to cover early termination fees when you switch from another provider. On top of that, if you bundle with its 5G Unlimited Plan or higher, you can get unlimited home internet for just $35/month with Auto Pay. No contracts, a five-year price lock and easy setup. And if you are moving into a new place and need gear, Total's also offering a home internet router for just $24.99 when you activate a new Total Wireless Home Internet plan. – David Kim, Chief Revenue Officer at Verizon Value, May 2025 This is just the latest push from Total to grab attention. Earlier this month, it made Verizon 's premium 5G network much cheaper for switchers – specifically targeting users from Metro and Cricket. And speaking of Metro, T-Mobile's prepaid wireless service provider isn't backing down either – it recently rolled out a full prepaid revamp with four new plans, new perks and a 5-year price lock of its own. So yeah, if you are trying to figure out which carrier gives you the best bang for your buck, now's a good time to dig into your help comparing? Check out our guides:

Keep Clocks on Permanent Standard Time, Says Canadian Group

The annual switch to daylight saving time (DST) in many parts of the world is detrimental to public health and should be abolished in favor of permanent standard time (ST), Canadian researchers wrote in a recent editorial. The policy of turning clocks forward by an hour in the spring causes 'discrepancies between the circadian biological clock and the environmental light-dark cycle,' leading to 'social jet lag,' noted lead author David Dongkyung Kim, MD, assistant professor of geriatric psychiatry at the University of Toronto, Toronto, and colleagues. The Viewpoint was published on April 29 in JAMA. Clear Evidence 'DST is a policy that affects the lives of millions of people, but the potential benefits do not seem to outweigh the potential harms to public health,' Kim told Medscape Medical News. 'Clear evidence in the medical literature as well as widespread expert consensus [shows] the acute transition of the clock time in the spring has been associated with increased myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and atrial fibrillation admissions,' he added. 'But it is not only the sudden change in the clock that is the issue. ST is more aligned with our natural circadian rhythms, and chronic misalignment has been associated with many negative health effects.' Canada first initiated DST during World War I. The rationale was to add more light to waking hours, thus saving energy. Today, only Saskatchewan and Yukon have abolished the time change, staying on permanent ST. Ontario passed legislation in 2020 to change to permanent DST, but it was contingent on Quebec and New York doing likewise, said Kim. 'Many studies seem to show an acute worsening of health with the spring transition, but not the fall transition, suggesting the health issues are due not only to acute changes in clock time but also to the discrepancy between clock time and circadian rhythm,' the authors noted. 'Although many studies suggest increased traffic crashes due to DST transition, others do not show this connection,' they added. And findings on DST transition and mental health risks such as unipolar depression, manic episodes, and suicide are also mixed. 'The main argument I hear for establishing permanent DST is that it is nicer to see the sun set later in the day,' said Kim. 'To that, I respond that you can use your own volition to wake up an hour earlier without forcing permanent DST on the entire population.' Late evening light, which DST makes possible, disrupts the natural seasonal adjustment of circadian rhythms. The misalignment between one's personal schedule and the circadian rhythm, which is called social jet lag, is well understood. It is associated with negative outcomes such as obesity, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, and depression. Global Consensus In a position statement, the Canadian Sleep Society called for abandoning DST, and there is 'global consensus from sleep and chronobiology experts on this matter,' said Rébecca Robillard, PhD, a clinical neuropsychologist and associate professor of psychology at the University of Ottawa, Ottawa. Robillard, who did not contribute to the editorial, also leads clinical sleep research at the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and is co-chair of the Canadian Sleep Research Consortium. 'Considering the impacts that this practice has on a large range of health and safety issues, we should abolish DST and stick to ST all year around,' she told Medscape Medical News. 'Time change goes beyond gaining or losing an hour of sleep; it perturbs our biological clock, which results in population-wide increases in heart attacks, strokes, infections and immune diseases, digestive problems, pregnancy and childbirth complications, and a deterioration in mental health. It's not a question of opinion or personal preference, but of public health and scientific evidence.' Kim and Robillard reported having no relevant financial relationships.

How Much Should Weight Loss Drugs Like Wegovy and Zepbound Cost?

It's easy to make a medical case for blockbuster weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound, which have been shown to prevent heart attacks and strokes and save lives. But for the employers and government programs being asked to pay for the medications, the financial case for them is less clear. Are the drugs' benefits worth their enormous cost? The answer right now is no, according to a new study published on Friday in the journal JAMA Health Forum, by researchers at the University of Chicago. To be considered cost effective by a common measure used by health economists, the price of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy would need to be cut by over 80 percent, to $127 per month, the researchers concluded. And Eli Lilly's Zepbound would be cost effective only if its price fell by nearly a third, to $361 per month. (Zepbound warranted a higher price, the researchers said, because it produced greater benefits in clinical trials.) 'There's no doubt that the drugs are demonstrating tremendous health benefits,' said David Kim, a health economist at the University of Chicago and the senior author of the study, which was funded by government grants. 'The problem is the price is too high.' There's widespread hope that the drugs will effectively pay for themselves in the long run, by making patients healthier and preventing expensive medical bills. It's not clear yet whether that will turn out to be true. Thank you for your patience while we verify access. Keel Laying Held for NSMV V, The Fifth and Final National Security Multi-Mission Vessel in the Fleet

The fifth vessel is commissioned by MARAD for California State University Maritime Academy PHILADELPHIA, March 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- TOTE Services, LLC ("TOTE Services"), an affiliate of the TOTE Group, and Hanwha Philly Shipyard, Inc. ("Hanwha Philly Shipyard"), today celebrated a major shipbuilding milestone with the keel laying of the fifth and final vessel in the National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) program. Commissioned by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration (MARAD), the NSMV program is designed to provide world-class training for America's future mariners while also supporting humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions when needed. Laying the keel is a longstanding maritime tradition in which the first grand block of a vessel is placed in the building dock. This ceremonial event is believed to bring good fortune to the ship during construction and throughout its service life. Under the Vessel Construction Manager (VCM) acquisition model, TOTE Services and Hanwha Philly Shipyard have delivered the first two NSMV's (Empire State and Patriot State) with the third vessel scheduled for delivery later this year. The VCM approach allows for the application of commercial best practices in design and construction, increasing efficiency and accelerating vessel deliveries to the U.S. Government. All five NSMV keels have been laid over the past 39 months, demonstrating the speed at which the commercial sector can move under this contracting model. "We are proud to celebrate the keel laying of NSMV V, marking another key milestone in this groundbreaking shipbuilding program," said David Kim, Hanwha Philly Shipyard CEO. "This program is a testament to the strength of the U.S. maritime industry, and we are honored to work alongside TOTE Services and MARAD in delivering these advanced training vessels that will benefit generations of cadets to come." The NSMV program is a major boost for American shipbuilding, an industry that sustains nearly 400,000 jobs across the country. These state-of-the-art vessels feature advanced training facilities, a fully equipped bridge, and accommodation for up to six hundred cadets and one hundred faculty, offering an unmatched educational experience at sea. Graduates from the nation's state maritime academies make up over half of all newly commissioned U.S. merchant marine officers each year, playing a crucial role in keeping commerce moving and strengthening national security by staffing military sealift operations. "As we celebrate this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to MARAD and the future of U.S. maritime education and shipbuilding," said Jeff Dixon, President of TOTE Services. "The VCM model executed by TOTE Services has demonstrated its ability to reduce costs, accelerate delivery timelines, and provide state-of-the-art vessels that will serve our country for decades to come." The five NSMVs are being constructed to replace aging training vessels at SUNY Maritime College, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Maine Maritime Academy, Texas A&M Maritime Academy, and California State University Maritime Academy. The vessels will be owned and operated by MARAD. "California State University Maritime Academy is honored to be part of a distinguished fleet of purpose-built training ships, each designed to meet the evolving needs of America's maritime education while also providing the U.S. with ships that can support disaster response and other critical national needs," said Vice Admiral (Ret.) Michael J. Dumont, Interim President of Cal Maritime. "This vessel stands as a testament to innovation, resilience, and the nation's unwavering commitment to preparing the next generation of mariners. It will be proudly operated by the crew, cadets, and faculty of the only state maritime academy on the West Coast." The first and second NSMV, Empire State and Patriot State were delivered in September 2023 and 2024, respectively. The three remaining vessels are currently in various stages of construction at Hanwha Philly Shipyard.
