Video Shows Moment Car Ploughs Liverpool Football Club Victory Parade
Liverpool, UK: A car ploughed into a packed crowd celebrating Liverpool's Premier League title victory on Monday, injuring nearly 50 people, including four children. The police have arrested a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area in connection with the incident, but the event was not being treated as terrorism. "We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it," Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims told a press conference. "The incident is not being treated as terrorism," she added. At least 27 football fans were taken to the hospital, David Kitchin, the head of service at North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said. According to him, two people, one child and one adult, had "sustained serious injuries. Police added that 20 other people with minor injuries were treated at the scene, and more were showing up at local emergency departments with injuries. Officials did not identify any of the victims. A video of the incident has surfaced on social media showing a dark-color vehicle suddenly accelerating into the crowd. At least one person can be seen being thrown into the air, and others falling around as the car lurched forward. The video then shows the vehicle being brought to a halt and swarmed by angry fans, who broke the back windows as police sought to hold them back. Tens of thousands of people had turned out in torrential rain for what should have been jubilant celebrations to see the northwest English side's victory parade. Prime Minister Keir Starmer commended the "remarkable bravery shown by the police and other emergency services". "They are supporting and caring for those injured in these terrible events," he said in a statement, adding: "the whole country stands with Liverpool".

Four children injured as car hits Liverpool crowd
Four children were among dozens injured after a car was driven into a crowd of pedestrians who had watched Liverpool FC's open-top bus Premier League trophy parade. The people carrier struck a dense crowd on Water Street in the city centre at shortly before 18:00 BST - an attack not being treated as a terrorist incident by police. Merseyside Police said a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, believed to have been the driver, was detained at the scene and added it is not looking for anyone else. One child and three adults had to be freed from under the vehicle by fire crews, and of 27 people taken to hospital, one child and one adult suffered "serious injuries". As it happened: Child and adult seriously hurt and dozens more injured after car ploughs into Liverpool crowd What we know about the Liverpool parade incident Ass Ch Con Jenny Sims, speaking at a press conference in the Cunard Building in Liverpool, said on Monday evening that the force believed the attack was not terror-related and was being treated as an "isolated incident". "Extensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision," she said. "It is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media." David Kitchin, service lead for Mersey Cheshire at the North West Ambulance Service, said 20 people at the scene were also treated for minor injuries that did not require hospital treatment. "This is indeed an appalling incident and we understand that people will be deeply upset," he said. Mr Kitchin said the vehicle had struck a cycling paramedic on site as part of the preparations for the parade, but they had escaped without injury. Nick Searle, chief fire officer at Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, said his officers had to lift the vehicle to rescue those trapped beneath. The patients were taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital, Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Arrowe Park and Aintree Hospital. Videos widely circulating on social media showed the vehicle come to a stop before members of the public swarmed around it and banged on its surfaces. Other videos seem to show a man in the car arguing with pedestrians and beeping his horn before accelerating forwards. Businesses around the Water Street area, including restaurants Blu Riva and Mowgli, were offering shelter to people injured in the attack. Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson told the press conference the attack had "cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day for the city". He appealed for people not to share footage of the incident on social media. "Once again, our hearts go out to all those affected," he said. "Liverpool is a city that has a proud history of coming together and supporting each other during challenging times "I've no doubt that will again be the case over the coming days and weeks." Eyewitnesses described a scene of total panic. Peter Jones, visiting from the Isle of Man to watch the parade, said: "We heard a frantic beeping ahead, a car flew past me and my mate, people were chasing it and trying to stop him, windows smashed at the back. "He then drove into people, police and medics ran past us, and people were being treated on the side of the road. "There were a lot injured. We heard it behind us hit the crowds, then we saw half a dozen people [injured] in the road as we were walking up." The 44-year-old said he and his friend were "in a bit of a shock" as they headed back to their hotel. Harry Rashid was also on Water Street with his wife and two young daughters. "It was extremely fast," he said. "Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car. "My daughter started screaming and there were people on the ground. "I saw people lying on the ground, people unconscious. "It was horrendous. So horrendous." Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the scenes in Liverpool had been "appalling" and said his thoughts were with those affected. "I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident," he said. "I'm being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate." Liverpool FC also issue a statement and said the club was in direct contact with the police. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who been affected by this serious incident," a spokesperson said. "We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident." Four of the 27 people taken to hospital after a car ploughed into Liverpool fans celebrating at the club's Premier League title parade were children, North West Ambulance Service has said. At a press conference held on Monday evening, David Kitchin of North West Ambulance Service said 27 people were taken to hospital and 20 people were treated at the scene, with four children among the injured. He said two of those taken to hospital, including one of the children, suffered serious injuries. 'Twenty-seven patients in total were taken to hospital by ambulance, and we believe two of those, including one of the children, have sustained serious injuries.' Witnesses described scenes of horror as they watched a car plough through crowds of people out celebrating Liverpool FC's Premier League win. An estimated one million people took to the city's streets for the football club's Victory Parade on Monday. The incident unfolded in Water Street, which connects onto the Strand, about a mile before the parade's finishing point. The Liverpool bus had recently passed the crowds gathered there when a car began ploughing through people, according to BBC reporter Matt Cole who attended the parade with his family. Police said reports started coming in just after 6pm. Another witness, Matthew O'Carroll, 28, from Runcorn, saw the car approaching the top of Water Street, PA reports. He said the vehicle went past a parked police van at a 'decent' speed and that the driver was beeping as he went through the crowd. Harry Rashid, 48, from Solihull, described the car as a grey, people carrier travelling south down the street towards the Strand. Footage of the incident, which was circulating online on Monday, appeared to show the car speed up as it veered into pedestrians on both sides of the street, passing a Hooters restaurant at one point, with people knocked to the floor off the windshield, falling to the ground and darting out of the way to avoid harm. 'It was extremely fast,' Mr Rashid said. 'Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car.' He described how crowds began trying to smash the car windows, causing the driver to stall for about 10 seconds, before putting his foot down again and hitting more people. 'It was horrible,' the witness said. 'And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people.' Another witness, Mike Maddra, said he saw the car mount the pavement. Mr Cole described the vehicle being chased by a group of men, telling BBC News how they tried to bang its side and launch objects at it. 'The back of the rear windshield had been completely smashed in, but it just had no intention of stopping,' he said. The reporter described how police officers exited a 'squad' of armed police vehicles with rifles and medical packs and began running to the scene. Daniel Jones, 28, told The Sun newspaper that police restrained people who were 'smashing' the car. 'They were ripping the register plate off,' he said. 'The back window was broken when the (driver) was still in it.' Merseyside Police said the car eventually stopped at the scene and the man was detained. Afterwards, there was a heavy emergency services presence afterwards in the littered street, with police cars, ambulances and fire engines all at the scene. A 53-year-old man has since been arrested. Merseyside Police said the suspect was white, British and from the Liverpool area.
