US tariffs may alter export plans from India: Kohler CEO
David Kohler , chair and CEO of US kitchen and bathroom products company Kohler, said the brand was hopeful that India and US can sort out the current tariff issue and find a fair path forward. "They are two important historic friends and trading partners, and it doesn't make sense to change that," Kohler told ET. Kohler has invested ₹312 crore in the last five years in the company towards growth, expansion and modernisation of its operations. Kohler India is planning the expansion of its manufacturing capabilities through a planned investment of ₹800 crore in the next three fiscals. "We like exporting from our India plants, and we are hopeful that trading conditions enable that. We always want to export from India, depending on the trading conditions. It's going to be really a matter of where in the world we export to. We have markets all over the world so we can export to Europe, to the United States, or South Asian markets. But, depending on what tariff levels are, that will depend on where we export to," said Kohler. Live Events India is among the top three markets for Kohler and continues to be the fastest growing market for the brand. "India remains one of our most strategic markets in the world. We looked at a lot of potential acquisitions before we decided to invest in India and we took the harder road, but I think it's one that's paid off better. The decision to manufacture in India for India combined with our decision to design and develop and then produce in India, has really been key," Kohler said. The executive said that the Indian consumer continues to look for luxury and the brand is changing the offering accordingly. "We are going to continue to invest in India and bring new things, new products and new brands to India. We are now launching a luxury product for the consumer who has access to the best brands in the world. Luxury market is just getting bigger and it's one of the fastest growing segments in India," Kohler said. The company is expanding its manufacturing capacity in India on the back of growing demand. Despite all the geopolitical tension, Kohler feels the growth in the business will continue. "We feel pretty positive about where we are right now. Despite all the tariff concern in the United States, I think the country's shown good resilience. The US is such a big service economy that inflationary impact has been a little more muted, that is what people might have thought," Kohler said. "It could be a nice period of economic growth and expansion over the next five years, which might be a little counter-intuitive to some of the prevailing thinking of what the tariff might do. The geopolitical tensions could create issues, but it's kind of interesting how the world has been somewhat immune to all of these tensions and just continued to move forward," the executive said.

Whistling Straits seeks Ryder Cup return: 'We certainly would love to see that back'
Whistling Straits seeks Ryder Cup return: 'We certainly would love to see that back' Whistling Straits is hosting the PGA Works Collegiate Championship this week for the first time, but the Wisconsin resort has grander ambitions. Kohler Co., whose company owns Whistling Straits, already has hosted three PGA Championships in 2004, 2010 and '15. But the move of that event from August to May beginning in 2019, may make conditions less suitable for a return. 'That's less optimal, given our growing season here and where we are from a timing standpoint,' Kohler chairman and CEO David Kohler told Front Office Sports. But the Ryder Cup, which was played at Whistling Straits the last time the biennial competition was hosted on U.S. soil, in 2021, would be right up Kohler's alley. 'I think definitely the Ryder Cup in the future,' Kohler told Front Office Sports. 'We think we deserve, and have proved the right, to be considered for that again. The 2021 event at Whistling Straits will go down as one of the greatest Ryder Cups in history—the venue, the drama, the U.S. win. I think we earned the right to be considered in the future; we certainly would love to see that back.' The first open Ryder Cup date available is 2041, while the PGA Championship has an opening in 2032. Whistling Straits will host the 2028 U.S. Amateur Championship, in addition to other future USGA events. 'We're in conversations with the PGA of America and USGA, as well as other organizations, regarding unique events that we might create. We have great championship venues, including Blackwolf Run, which hosted two U.S. Women's Opens in 2012 and 1998. They were purpose — built for majors and significant events — things like not having any housing anywhere on the course, the infrastructure that's been built around them, and the reputation for delivering great championships in a state that turns up. We have a lot of assets at our disposal, and hospitality resources we've built here in Kohler that can provide leading-edge accommodations. We have all the elements to host, so we want to continue to be selective and do special events.' Expect there to be plenty of competition for a future Ryder Cup but don't put it past Kohler to pull out all the stops to ensure a Ryder Cup return in the not-too distant future.
