Isle of Wight councillor 'must consider position' over attendance

An education councillor will be asked to 'consider his position' on a crucial committee after failing to attend vital meetings. Reform UK's Cllr David Maclean has been absent from the first three sessions of the children's services, education and skills committee (CSESC), its Conservative chair, Cllr Paul Brading, told members last night (Thursday). Cllr Maclean has attended only two out of six committee meetings he has been expected to attend since being elected as Lake North's representative in May, according to the Isle of Wight Council's website. His Reform UK colleague Cllr Caroline Gladwin stepped in for him yesterday, telling CSESC she would 'likely' be 'taking over' from him because of her 'interest' in the committee. Cllr Maclean was not present at the May 3 by-election count or his initiation ceremony at County Hall the following week. After unsuccessfully trying to contact the councillor at that time, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) was told by Reform UK's press office his absences were due to a serious illness in the family. In an interview with the LDRS in June, Cllr Brading, the member for Lake South, said the Island has 'too many' primary schools and there will need to be closures, with the Isle of Wight's falling birth rate and pupil numbers having a 'massive impact' on school finances. Cllr Brading said he needed to email Cllr Maclean after last night's meeting, 'asking him to consider his position', adding it was his duty as committee chair. East Cowes independent representative Cllr Karl Love said there were 'extremely difficult' and 'complex matters' which need to be resolved by the committee. 'Therefore, as much training, as much knowledge as possible needs to be brought into this meeting to make those decisions. Also, it's not fair to the ward (Lake North) which he represents not to be represented at meetings like this.' Cllr Maclean has been approached for comment.

Reform UK wins first seats on Isle of Wight
Reform UK has won two council by-election races on the Isle of Gladwin and David Maclean won Central Rural and Lake North ward's respectively, which are the party's first seats on the Isle of Wight candidate Becca Cameron won the Freshwater South Jonathan Bacon, who led contentious plans to close six Isle of Wight primary schools, lost his seat on Brading Town Council to Nick Binfield, a prominent campaigner against the closure of Brading Primary School. Mr Bacon garnered the fewest votes in the town council election, with 81, while Mr Binfield was elected for the first time with 168 Binfield said: "I am delighted to have been elected onto Brading Town Council. "I look forward to working with the community and other councillors to work positively for our community, and to continue to support our school and other aspects of our community."Mr Bacon, whose county seat was not up for election, has been approached for comment. After winning her seat, Ms Gladwin said: "I think this is a positive thing. The old parties have failed and people are looking for something new.
