Cops continue hunt for masked gang after machete attack on Edinburgh kingpin Mark Richardson's pal

Cops are continuing their hunt for a masked gang following a "machete attack" on Edinburgh's cocaine kingpin Mark Richardson's close friend at his home in the capital. On March 22 at 9.20pm, David McMillan was rushed to hospital and treated for serious injuries after the incident at his home on Pitcairn Grove. The attack has been confirmed to be linked to the gangland wars that have erupted across Scotland, reports The Daily Record. READ MORE: Edinburgh takeaway up in flames as emergency services race to scene READ MORE: Edinburgh police swoop on city centre as busy road cordoned off by officers Police are treating the incident as attempted murder as they continue their hunt for four balaclava-wearing men in dark clothing who remain at large. It is believed that the men got out of a grey-coloured Land Rover Discovery and assaulted 54-year-old McMillan before fleeing the scene. Subsequent inquiries have established the Land Rover Discovery travelled eastbound along the M8. A source told the Record: 'David saw a gang of four guys outside his house. 'So he went out to confront them along with a security guy he's employed to help his wife feel safer. 'He managed to hit one about the head and wrestled a phone from him. The attackers were trying to film it. 'David was then hit in the skull with the machete which left an open wound. Nothing life threatening though. But he and his minder then still managed to chase them away. David then drove himself to the hospital. When cops on patrol realised it was him they escorted him to hospital with their blue lights on so they could jump the traffic lights.' Officers are appealing to any drivers on the M8 on the night to contact them. Detective Superintendent Paul Grainger said: 'This has been a targeted attack and we are continuing our enquiries to identify those responsible. 'We know the Land Rover Discovery drove along the M8 eastbound last night. It may have been driven at speed or erratically so I would appeal to any motorists with dash cams to check their footage as the images could be significant to our investigation. 'If anyone has any information regarding this crime, please contact us.' Earlier this year, violence erupted in the capital after Dubai-based Mr Big - recently unmasked as former Rangers ultra and Union Bears boss Ross McGill - was ripped off in a £500,000 cocaine deal by kingpin Richardson's cronies. It is understood his foot-soldiers used fake cash during a botched deal. Ever since, gangster Mr Big has been targeting the homes, properties and businesses of Richardson's associates. It is the third time McMillan has been targeted in recent weeks. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. On April 17, two masked thugs set fire to McMillan's front door while children slept inside. The culprits torched the property before fleeing the scene. Just three weeks later on May 8, a white Land Rover SUV in his driveway went up in flames after his family returned home from a shopping trip. Shocking images of the charred wreckage showed a scorched baby seat in the back of the burnt-out vehicle. Cops arrested and charged three men aged 18 and one aged 31 with fire-raising at the home. The latest attack comes just three days after two men were injured in a separate machete attack at a garage owned by Glasgow crime clan member Robert Daniel. The violent incident took place outside the 50-year-old's CS Accident repair shop in East Kilbride on Monday. Two men, aged 41 and 45, were injured in the incident. The Record understands Robert was the intended victim as his family have been targeted over their association with Richardson. Cops have committed to coming down hard on those involved in the violence in an investigation, known as Operation Portaledge, which has seen multiple properties smashed into during dawn raids at homes in Glasgow, Hamiltonhill, Milton of Campsie and Wishaw. A total of 41 people have been arrested in the Glasgow and Edinburgh regions amid the wide-ranging probe. Police Scotland Chief Constable Jo Farrell said the investigation is a priority for forensics teams. Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox

Belgian insurer Ageas acquires UK's Esure from Bain Capital for €1.5bn

Belgium's Ageas has agreed to buy UK insurer Esure from private equity firm Bain Capital for around £1.3 billion (€1.5bn). Insurer Ageas said the deal would allow it to save at least £100 million (€115.8mn) per year before tax, according to a statement released on Monday. The firm added that the deal will expand its reach, helping to grow its market revenue to £3.3bn (€3.8bn) by 2028. The transaction is predicted to close in the second half of this year, subject to regulatory approval. 'This transaction will allow us to offer competitive value propositions to a wider customer profile via a multi-channel distribution model, positioning Ageas UK as one of the top three personal lines insurers,' CEO of Ageas Group, Hans De Cuyper, said on Monday. CEO of Esure Group, David McMillan, said in the same statement: 'Combining Ageas's scale, financial strength and excellent broker relationships with esure's strong retail brands, market-leading data capabilities and strength on PCWs, alongside a shared technology platform, will enhance our combined ability to invest in our customer proposition and open up new opportunities for growth.' Esure, which also operates under the brand names Sheilas' Wheels and First Alternative, was founded in 2000 and has been owned by Bain Capital since 2018. The group paid £1.2bn (€1.4bn) to end public ownership of the firm in 2018. Related UK insurers Aviva and Direct Line agree on sweetened takeover bid Aviva buys Direct Line, gaining share of the UK motor insurance market The deal also comes after Ageas attempted to expand its UK footprint by bidding for Direct Line. The British car insurer rejected two takeover bids from Ageas, the second of which valued the firm at £3.2bn (€3.7bn), branding the offer as 'unattractive' for shareholders. Direct Line is now being acquired by the UK's largest insurer Aviva for £3.7bn (€4.3bn), a takeover Direct Line approved after rejecting the firm's first offer. The acquisition means the combined group dominates more than 20% of the motor insurance market and 15% of the home sector. Esure said it had seen 'excellent progress' in its financial report for 2024, making a turnover of £1.1bn (€1.3bn), compared to £973mn in 2023. The company made a trading profit of around £126.8mn (€146.7mn) last year, up from a loss of £16.7mn in 2023. The deal between Esure and Ageas comes after the UK government launched an investigation into the high cost of car insurance last year, although prices have been falling in recent months.

Family targeted in gang war demand to be left in peace as new images of masked hoods emerge

Terrifying new images show the masked thugs who left a white Land Rover Defender engulfed in flames at the plush Edinburgh home of David McMillan, 54, last week. A family targeted in Scotland's gang war have demanded to be left in peace as terrifying new images reveal the masked hoods who torched their car. A white Land Rover Defender was engulfed in flames at the plush Edinburgh home of David McMillan, 54, last week after his family returned from a shopping trip. ‌ Firebombers had already attacked McMillan's home weeks earlier, while children slept inside. ‌ Now chilling images obtained by the Daily Record show brazen thugs setting the motor alight. A source close to the McMillans yesterday condemned the attacks - saying the family have no part in the 'disgusting' gang war putting their lives under threat. A source close to the family said: 'These are the faces of the scumbags who carry out these crimes. 'This family has nothing to do with this disgusting war.' In another gangland attack thugs linked to the Tamo Junto (TMJ) crime gang targeted a property in Edinburgh on Saturday. ‌ The attacks are being co-ordinated by a Mr Big in Dubai - who can't be named for legal reasons. TMJ have claimed credit for a string of attacks on properties linked to associates of jailed Edinburgh coke kingpin Mark Richardson and the Glasgow based Daniel clan as the turf war continues to escalate. The gangland feud is believed to have been started after a £500k stash of cocaine was bought from the Dubai- based Mr Big - but paid for with fake notes. ‌ Mr Big has waged a relentless war on the Daniel clan and Richardson's mob since March. We previously told how the McMillan family, including grandkids, were at the house at the time of Thursday's attack at the £1.2million home in the upmarket Craiglockhart area of Edinburgh. ‌ A man wearing a black balaclava and black jacket was filmed running from the scene as the Land Rover bursts into flames. While a later video shows the fire service turning up to tackle the blaze as the vehicle is well alight. One of the videos was released by the so-called Tamo Junto group. ‌ Now, new images from sources close to the family, clearly show one of the thugs using a petrol can to douse fuel over two cars parked on the driveway while another masked thug in a dark jacket and light trousers looks on. The source branded the attackers 'scumbags', saying they had put children at risk. Detective Superintendent Paul Grainger said it had been a 'reckless' and 'targeted' attack, adding: 'It is fortunate that no one was injured.' ‌ Three suspects dressed in dark-coloured clothing were reported to have left the area in a black hatchback vehicle along Greenbank Drive at about 7.45pm. The property was also targeted on April 17 when two masked thugs set the front door on fire while children slept inside. ‌ The feud started in Edinburgh in March with a number of firebombings at properties linked to Richardson, but moved to Glasgow last month with the Daniel clan being targeted. After a lull in the violence the war erupted again last week when a social media account was created mocking Mr Big and his TMJ gang. In the latest incident, terrifying footage shows masked thugs smashing windows of the property in Edinburgh at around 6pm on Saturday. ‌ The yobs forced open the door and smashed windows and items inside the property. No one is believed to have been injured in the incident. Richardson's brother, Dale, was targeted last Monday morning when his house in the capital was vandalised. ‌ Police Scotland have vowed to crack down on the gang wars and charged six men with a variety of offences yesterday following a series of dawn raids on Friday morning. A house in Barlanark, in Glasgow 's east end, was targeted by officers armed with a circular saw-type power tool and batons at 5am. Officers hacked at a full-length window before storming the semi-detached house and seizing two suspects from within. ‌ Detective Chief Superintendent David Ferry said issued a warning to those fuelling the gang war, saying 'violence will not be tolerated and will not stop until we bring those responsible for this criminality to justice'. He said the force was 'working tirelessly to build cases' and are following a number of significant lines of enquiry. A total of 32 people have now been arrested in relation to their investigation, which focuses on the suspected gang feud. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
