Thomasville hospital receives an A in national health care report
THOMASVILLE — A semiannual national health care report gave one Davidson County-based hospital an A grade and the another a B. Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center received an A in the nonprofit watchdog The Leapfrog Group's spring 2025 report, while Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Lexington Medical Center in Lexington received a B. Novant Health has received the most A hospital safety grades in North Carolina for the fourth consecutive grading period. The nine recognized N.C. Novant Health hospitals, including Thomasville Medical, outperformed nearly 70% of hospitals nationwide for safety and quality with A grades. 'Our team members' faithful commitment to providing safe, high-quality care for each patient shines through in this recognition,' said Dr. David Priest, senior vice president and chief safety and quality officer for Novant Health. 'We are proud of our collective efforts to keep safety and quality at the center of everything we do. While these scores reflect a certain timeframe and set of criteria, they allow our teams to continually monitor benchmarks and set even higher goals to ensure we are constantly improving to create a healthier future for every patient and community we serve.' A spokesperson for Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist said, 'We are committed to always providing the highest levels of safe, high-quality care to our patients and the communities we serve, and we remain dedicated to constant improvement.' Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist also received a B in 2024. The Leapfrog Group reviews hospital and patient outcomes across the United States based on more than 30 performance measures focused on safety, quality and patient experience. Each assessment results in a letter grade ranging from A to F. Scores are released twice a year, in the spring and fall. Leapfrog researchers said they have determined that when compared with a hospital rated an A, patients face on average a 35% greater risk of avoidable death at a B hospital, an 88% greater risk at a C hospital and a 92% greater risk at a D or F hospital.

Atrium, Novant Health to lift visitor restrictions for children under age 13
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Starting March 27 at 7 a.m., Atrium and Novant Health will lift their temporary visitor restrictions for children under age 13 after two months of being in place for hospitals in North Carolina. 'We have observed a steady decline in the volume and severity of respiratory illnesses over the past several weeks. Together with other North Carolina health systems, we are making the decision to lift our temporary visitor restrictions,' said Dr. David Priest, senior vice president and chief safety and quality officer, of Novant Health. 'We thank everyone for their cooperation and support to keep our patients safe during peak respiratory virus season. We look forward to welcoming back visitors of all ages to our hospitals.' Masks are optional and will continue to be available for visitors; however, for Atrium visitors, masks are required for all individuals in high-risk patient areas when indicated by signage and for symptomatic patients if outside their patient room. 'While respiratory viral season started late this year and we saw high rates of flu and RSV cases, we have seen a sustained and progressive decrease in the respiratory viral infection in our communities and hospitals over the past several weeks,' said Dr. Katie Passaretti, chief infection prevention officer for Advocate Health, of which Atrium Health. 'While this year's season is coming to a close, we must remain vigilant and responsive to any potential changes. Our focus remains on providing safe and effective care to all patients, and this decision is a testament to our collective efforts in combating infectious diseases.' Both organizations continue to recommend that all visitors take measures to limit the spread of respiratory viruses: Stay home if you're sick. Health officials strongly encourage people to stay home when sick, maintain good respiratory etiquette such as handwashing and covering the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing. Get vaccinated. Most importantly, get vaccinated against flu, RSV (for eligible children and senior citizens) and COVID-19. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Amazon Drops Blink Video Doorbell by 45% to Near-Black Friday Price
It's all well and good enhancing everything within your home, but keeping it protected is just as important. And with the best home security systems commonly being found for upwards of $100, cheaper solutions are hard to find. Well, one entry-level option is the Blink Video Doorbell, a battery-powered smart doorbell that lets you keep an eye on visitors, delivery drivers and any unwanted guests. Typically priced at $60, the newest model has been dropped to $33 at Amazon. Available in black or white, the camera offers 1080p HD video that can be accessed from your smartphone. It sports two-way voice audio, night vision, motion sensing and weather resistance so it can work all year round. "When you put the whole package together, Blink is a pretty compelling product," wrote David Priest in his review for CNET. "No, it's not going to be as reliable a security device as something more full-featured, but if you just want the bare basics, it's a reliable little product for a near unbeatable price." Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money. The package includes one Blink Video Doorbell, two double-A 1.5V lithium batteries, four screws as well as one case opening tool. The only downsides highlighted in the review were no live feed and no free storage, meaning a subscription is required. That said, a free 30-day Plus Plan from Blink is thrown in with the purchase. After that, it's $3 per month per device or $10 per month for unlimited devices and cameras from Blink. Blink has proven itself to be a decent budget brand for the basics when it comes to smart home security devices. Add in the fact this video doorbell is only $3 away from its lowest-ever price -- only previously seen during Black Friday -- and this is a great deal. Just remember this is a limited-time offer from Amazon, so they tend to last anywhere from 12 to 48 hours. Act fast so you don't miss out.
