Dragons RFC unveil its new Eco Hub at Rodney Parade
The hub, based at Rodney Parade, aims to support sustainability efforts across Newport and the wider Gwent region, and is part of the club's ongoing environmental campaign. The Eco Hub, constructed from repurposed storage units, will serve as a central space for community groups focused on sustainability and environmental action. David Watts, sustainability lead at Dragons RFC, said: "We're very proud to launch our Eco Hub and Cycle Storage Unit, supported by Pledgeball and funded through seeding from Admiral and the WSA. "We're thrilled to announce the hub will now be available for any community groups looking to make a positive impact and more details on how to book the space will be shared in the coming days." The project was made possible through a sustainability grant from Admiral and the Welsh Sports Association. The hub is part of the club's broader 'Eco Dragons' campaign, which aims to reduce the club's carbon footprint and encourage positive environmental change in the community. Mr Watts said: "We have several exciting plans as part of the Eco Hub, including increasing the biodiversity and greenery in and around Rodney Parade as well as further afield in the local community, including within the homes of fans. "It's our mission to foster a long-term shift in behaviour and receptivity to sustainability messages amongst the community and fan base of Dragons RFC and the wider Newport city area and Gwent region." In addition to the Eco Hub, a new cycle storage unit has been installed at Rodney Parade. The facility will be available on match days and throughout the week, encouraging supporters to travel by bike and reduce their carbon emissions. The cycle storage is part of the club's push to promote active, low-carbon transport options. Mr Watts said: "A huge thank you to Alice Jardine from Admiral for joining us and officially opening the hub. "We appreciate everyone who came out to support this initiative." 'This marks our second consecutive year receiving this award.'
The club was acknowledged at the Welsh Sports Association Awards, winning the Best Sustainability Initiative for 2025. A spokesperson for the club said: "To receive the award was a huge honour and reflects our ongoing commitment to making a positive impact on the environment and fostering sustainable practices within our community." Dragons RFC Sustainability Lead David Watts said in a post on LinkedIn on Friday, June 13: "Dragons RFC are pleased to announce that we have been awarded the Welsh Sports Association Best Sustainability Initiative for 2025, sponsored by Floodlighting and Electrical. "This marks our second consecutive year receiving this award, reflecting our ongoing commitment to making a positive impact on the environment and fostering sustainable practices within our community." The club credited much of its success to partnerships with Newport Transport Ltd, Stagecoach Group Limited, Katie Cross from Pledgeball, and Cardiff University. Mr Watts continued in his post: "A massive thank you to our incredible partners, Newport Transport Ltd and Stagecoach Group Limited for their unwavering support this past season. Their initiative to provide all season ticket holders with free travel for home matches has been a game changer for our fans and our sustainability goals. "I'd also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Katie Cross from Pledgeball and Cardiff University for their invaluable assistance with our triple award winning Dragons eco campaign. Your expertise and enthusiasm have been instrumental in driving our initiatives forward." Dragons RFC said that this recognition marks the beginning of further endeavours towards a sustainable future, with plans to continue its ECO Dragons project and other initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint.

Rising cagers get a newly refurbished basketball court in Abu Dhabi
ADQ, an active sovereign investor, recently unveiled the first newly refurbished public basketball court in Abu Dhabi as part of its collaboration with the National Basketball Association (NBA). The new court at Zayed Sports City is the first of several basketball courts set to be refurbished for the local community in the Emirate. The court unveiling ceremony began with a ribbon-cutting by Mouza Al Romaithi, Director of Information and Cybersecurity and wellness ambassador at ADQ, and NBA Head of New Business Development, Europe and Middle East, David Watts. This was followed by Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Abu Dhabi League players participating in NBA Fit clinics and competitions. In addition to serving as the presenting partner of the NBA Abu Dhabi Games since 2023, ADQ supports a variety of NBA fan engagement and youth development initiatives aimed at nurturing the next generation of fans and players in the UAE.
