Built to stay small: Inside the org charts of AI-native startups
Inc. spent years hiring its way to dominance – and then hired more people to manage all those people. Chief executive officer Andy Jassy is now trying to tame the bureaucracy this created, arguing the company needs to regain its nimbleness and act more like the startup it used to be. But what if Amazon were founded today? What if its first 10 hires weren't just "really smart, motivated, inventive, ambitious people', as Jassy describes them, but AI power users equipped with tools that could handle customer service, scheduling and product prototyping on their own? Could the company have scaled faster, and with fewer employees? That's the underlying premise of a new cohort of startups calling themselves "AI natives' – companies built from the ground up with artificial intelligence not just in the product, but at the heart of workflows and team structure. Jared Spataro, Microsoft Corp's chief marketing officer for AI at Work, has been studying tiny, AI-native companies for precisely this reason. "They take a step back and say, what are the inputs to our firm? What are the outputs? And what could we do with AI at the center?' he said in an interview. While their business models are still largely unproven, founders of AI-native companies say their approach helps them stay surprisingly lean. At Daydream, a fashion-shopping startup still in beta, the number of staff is in the low dozens. "If you wanted to do this company three or four years ago, you would need so many more people,' said Daydream co-founder Dan Cary, who worked at Google for more than a decade before becoming an entrepreneur. Or take Lex, an AI-powered writing assistant built for professional writers and academics. It has three employees and its founder wants to keep it that way, even if the business grows. "I love the idea of staying smaller over time so that the core group feels really aligned and really motivated, and able to communicate about hard things,' said founder Nathan Baschez. "You want the right small group of people rather than more people.' Consolidating tasks It's not just the raw computing power of AI that keeps headcounts low – it's AI's ability to collapse work that normally spans multiple functions into tasks that can be accomplished by one person, if any. At Daydream, even product managers who aren't highly technical can use AI coding assistants to build prototypes themselves, rather than having to wait on designers or engineers to build something for them. "It removes the technical barriers to creation' and speeds up the work, Cary said. Rather than testing one idea at a time, like a traditional company might, Daydream typically tests 15 to 20 ideas in parallel. "These AI tools are phenomenal at helping you find out if you're wrong faster, and helping you get to right faster,' he said. That's getting easier with the rise of AI agents, which are capable of handling multistep tasks. While a generative AI chatbot might be able to craft an email to a customer, an agent can be built to actually send the email, log any replies and even schedule a service call if needed, for example. At Sailplane, a stealth-mode startup building agents for AI engineers, co-founder and CEO Sam Ramji's scheduling is handled entirely by an AI agent that mimics the tone and cadence of a professional assistant. Ramji said the company plans to build agents for any parts of the business where off-the-shelf AI solutions aren't yet available. Sailplane has a team of six and aims to close out the year with no more than 10 people. Minimising complexity With small headcounts, founders say they can devote more time to building and less time to traditional management. Lex's Baschez estimated he spends 70% of his time on engineering work, a luxury he suspects he would lose if the business added many more people. He thinks large companies are disproportionately harder to manage and likens them to animals raised on factory farms. "They grow them way faster than they're supposed to and it causes all sorts of problems,' he said. AI-native companies have a chance to keep their org charts smaller and also more fluid, even compared with other startups. While it's not unusual for employees of early-stage companies to wear many hats, one of the promises of AI is that it will extend the range of each person, like the product managers now making prototypes at Daydream. Microsoft's Spataro said he's noticed that AI-native firms tend to employ more generalists. Since AI tools can often handle narrowly defined tasks traditionally given to specialists, "understanding the business end to end proves more valuable,' he said. But working at an AI-native startup still requires at least one special skill: proficiency using AI. Shortwave, a startup making AI-powered tools for managing email, cut its staff to six from 15 after parting ways with employees whose AI use wasn't up to par, said founder and CEO Andrew Lee. While he plans to add back a few more people, keeping a small headcount doesn't worry him. He's betting on swift execution to stay competitive – powered by agents, not layers of middle management. "We need to optimise our team for a small number of highly cross-functional people where we can move super fast,' he said. "Our moat is going to become speed.' – Bloomberg

Field Trip: ArtCult members explore the local art community
A pause in the rain in Irvine last week was welcomed by art enthusiasts who gathered at Unveil Gallery to see its latest exhibition, 'Daydream.' Members of the Orange County Museum of Art's ArtCult received a private tour from Unveil Gallery director Lorraine Han of the new exhibition featuring seven contemporary artists. 'This show is about reality and illusion,' Han explained as she led the group through the exhibition, which explores the act of daydreaming and other themes of escapism. The private tour was a special treat and one of the perks ArtCult members receive with their membership. Created by the Orange County Museum of Art with young professionals, collectors and philanthropists in mind, ArtCult hosts bimonthly social and educational opportunities at OCMA and beyond. 'ArtCult is a unique opportunity for members to not only engage with programs that are happening at OCMA, like artists talks, exhibition previews, art and happy hours, but it is also a chance to get off site, away from the museum and into the community,' said Brittany Delany director of foundation, corporate and government giving at the Orange County Museum of Art. The ArtCult membership includes artist walk-throughs of new OCMA exhibitions as well as private collection tours and studio visits in the Southern California area. When one ArtCult member suggested taking the group on 'fields trips' Delany began organizing opportunities for members to explore the art scene beyond the OCMA's Costa Mesa campus. 'In the summer we did a field trip to the Coast Mesa/Newport Beach area to visit a collector's house as well as a gallery,' Delany said. 'This year, in the spirit of field trips, we have gone to Los Angeles and today we are in Irvine. We have some other destinations coming up soon.' At Unveil Gallery, Han directed the group's eye to a collection of Polaroid-sized hyper-realistic paintings on the wall by visual artist Mary Henderson. 'All of the paintings are inspired by photos Mary took at her nearby neighborhood park,' said Han. 'You probably have to move a little closer to see people's expressions in each work.' The group leaned in to take in the details Henderson highlighted with intention within the tight frame of each painting; the texture of woman's hair or the curve of a child's face. 'Your comment about the Polaroid feel is really true; they feel so sweet and personal,' one member commented. 'It is almost like they have a filter on them, like the pre-Instagram days filter pack,' said another. The discussion with other art-minded individuals is part of the draw for members who may be established art collectors or artists themselves. 'I have had a really good time connecting with members of ArtCult who are artists, who are collectors, who are gallerists or people like me who just like to see art,' Delany said. 'I have also met people who don't know where to start when it comes to being an art collector.' While the ArtCult membership is priced at $1,000 annually, OCMA also offers other membership options at different price points. Admission to the museum is always free. 'Heidi Zuckerman, our chief executive officer and director at OCMA, believes that art is for everyone and art is a human right,' Delany noted. Regular memberships in the museum start at $100 a year and include benefits like discounts on OCMA merchandise and at OCMA's cafe and restaurant, Verdant. [Grace Kao] BTS J-Hope's ‘Sweet Dreams' an update to ‘Daydream'
J-Hope of BTS released the new single 'Sweet Dreams,' featuring Miguel, on Friday. Like an increasing number of K-pop songs, it was released at midnight in the eastern US to match the start of the week for the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts. The song is R&B and pop, with a memorable chorus and hook. It is also a love song. And unlike most of BTS' discography, the love is directed at one person and not to the BTS fandom Army. However, what was most notable for me were the parallels to his 2018 solo single, 'Daydream.' J-Hope is known to be meticulous, so these similarities are likely intentional. 'Sweet Dreams' and 'Daydream' both express the wish to escape the confines of celebrity. First, the music videos for both songs clock in at exactly 3:48. They both begin with J-Hope asleep in a small bedroom. In 'Daydream,' he is wearing a blue-and-white striped shirt. In 'Sweet Dreams,' his blanket is in the same blue-and-white striped pattern. A red cutout in 'Daydream' is repeated with the red hoodie he wears in 'Sweet Dreams,' as well. In the new video, his room is in a house flying above a nondescript American suburban town. The walls in this house move just as those in 'Daydream.' In the prior video, he peeks through the white blinds, but we cannot tell if he sees anything. His room becomes a fishbowl in which he is trapped. In the new song, he also peeks through white blinds, but we see him floating above the town. Later, we'll see that the J-Hope in the floating house sees the alternate J-Hope on the ground. The lyrics for 'Daydream' fantasize about a life other than as an idol where he is allowed to act freely. He sings: So what, I get drunk/ Until I go crazy/ So what, I go out/ Don't think about work/ Let's just feel the youth/ Young, wild and free/ Wild and free/ Let me give it a try. In 'Daydream,' J-Hope sits on a bed floating in outer space. The song references 'Alice in Wonderland,' 'Harry Potter' and 'A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.' 'Sweet Dreams' later shows J-Hope in a flying car. I do not know why there is a dust mop in the car with him. Perhaps this is from the construction crew working on his crumbling house. Does this represent either his fear of or hope for the loss of fame? He wears Fendi slippers in the old video, but Louis Vuitton slippers in the new one, but after all he is now a global brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton. I also think they both symbolize the shackles of his celebrity life. Finally, both songs end with him back in the bedroom that he appears in at the beginning of the music videos. In 'Sweet Dreams,' the alternate J-Hope who lives in the town below meets his girlfriend. The J-Hope in 'Daydream' only talks about falling in love. However, it is implied that the J-Hope in 'Sweet Dreams' has experienced a relationship, as a construction worker finds a photo of him and his girlfriend and we see evidence of two iced coffees. The apartment is also full of pairs of items. Still, the J-Hope in both music videos sleeps in a single bed at both the beginning and end of the music videos. The new song is completely in English and the lyrics are those of a typical love song. For example, the refrain goes: Sweet dreams come after hours/ Nothin' that's not allowed/ you should never sleep alone/ Cuz I'll always take you home/ When there's nothing left but diamond necklace on you, girl. The hook is basically J-Hope saying he will love her and that she will love him back. There is no suggestion of heartbreak. To promote this song, J-Hope has appeared nonstop on Korean television, including hit shows 'I Live Alone' and 'Please Take Care of My Refrigerator.' In the US, he is scheduled to appear on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.' He also recently held concerts in Seoul, and on Thursday he will begin the US segment of his tour. Moreover, he filmed a 12-hour Weverse Live on Friday that attracted 26.9 million views. This is an all-time record, besting bandmate Jungkook's record of 20 million views on a five-hour broadcast on the platform. Regarding the two songs, one happy interpretation is that J-Hope in 2025 has at last experienced romantic love. The new music video shows him flying above an American town and expresses his desire to dominate the US market. The older song is in Korean and English, while the new song is entirely in English. Otherwise, there is remarkable continuity between the old and new J-Hope, and that will keep fans like me happy.
