[Grace Kao] BTS J-Hope's ‘Sweet Dreams' an update to ‘Daydream'
J-Hope of BTS released the new single 'Sweet Dreams,' featuring Miguel, on Friday. Like an increasing number of K-pop songs, it was released at midnight in the eastern US to match the start of the week for the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts. The song is R&B and pop, with a memorable chorus and hook. It is also a love song. And unlike most of BTS' discography, the love is directed at one person and not to the BTS fandom Army.
However, what was most notable for me were the parallels to his 2018 solo single, 'Daydream.' J-Hope is known to be meticulous, so these similarities are likely intentional.
'Sweet Dreams' and 'Daydream' both express the wish to escape the confines of celebrity.
First, the music videos for both songs clock in at exactly 3:48. They both begin with J-Hope asleep in a small bedroom. In 'Daydream,' he is wearing a blue-and-white striped shirt. In 'Sweet Dreams,' his blanket is in the same blue-and-white striped pattern. A red cutout in 'Daydream' is repeated with the red hoodie he wears in 'Sweet Dreams,' as well.
In the new video, his room is in a house flying above a nondescript American suburban town. The walls in this house move just as those in 'Daydream.' In the prior video, he peeks through the white blinds, but we cannot tell if he sees anything. His room becomes a fishbowl in which he is trapped.
In the new song, he also peeks through white blinds, but we see him floating above the town. Later, we'll see that the J-Hope in the floating house sees the alternate J-Hope on the ground.
The lyrics for 'Daydream' fantasize about a life other than as an idol where he is allowed to act freely. He sings:
So what, I get drunk/ Until I go crazy/ So what, I go out/ Don't think about work/ Let's just feel the youth/ Young, wild and free/ Wild and free/ Let me give it a try.
In 'Daydream,' J-Hope sits on a bed floating in outer space. The song references 'Alice in Wonderland,' 'Harry Potter' and 'A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.'
'Sweet Dreams' later shows J-Hope in a flying car. I do not know why there is a dust mop in the car with him. Perhaps this is from the construction crew working on his crumbling house. Does this represent either his fear of or hope for the loss of fame?
He wears Fendi slippers in the old video, but Louis Vuitton slippers in the new one, but after all he is now a global brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton. I also think they both symbolize the shackles of his celebrity life. Finally, both songs end with him back in the bedroom that he appears in at the beginning of the music videos.
In 'Sweet Dreams,' the alternate J-Hope who lives in the town below meets his girlfriend. The J-Hope in 'Daydream' only talks about falling in love. However, it is implied that the J-Hope in 'Sweet Dreams' has experienced a relationship, as a construction worker finds a photo of him and his girlfriend and we see evidence of two iced coffees. The apartment is also full of pairs of items. Still, the J-Hope in both music videos sleeps in a single bed at both the beginning and end of the music videos.
The new song is completely in English and the lyrics are those of a typical love song. For example, the refrain goes:
Sweet dreams come after hours/ Nothin' that's not allowed/ you should never sleep alone/ Cuz I'll always take you home/ When there's nothing left but diamond necklace on you, girl.
The hook is basically J-Hope saying he will love her and that she will love him back. There is no suggestion of heartbreak.
To promote this song, J-Hope has appeared nonstop on Korean television, including hit shows 'I Live Alone' and 'Please Take Care of My Refrigerator.'
In the US, he is scheduled to appear on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.'
He also recently held concerts in Seoul, and on Thursday he will begin the US segment of his tour. Moreover, he filmed a 12-hour Weverse Live on Friday that attracted 26.9 million views. This is an all-time record, besting bandmate Jungkook's record of 20 million views on a five-hour broadcast on the platform.
Regarding the two songs, one happy interpretation is that J-Hope in 2025 has at last experienced romantic love. The new music video shows him flying above an American town and expresses his desire to dominate the US market.
The older song is in Korean and English, while the new song is entirely in English. Otherwise, there is remarkable continuity between the old and new J-Hope, and that will keep fans like me happy.

BTS' Jimin, Jungkook released from military service
Jimin and Jungkook, members of the K-pop megagroup BTS, were discharged from the South Korean military Wednesday after completing their 18-month mandatory service, as fans eagerly awaited their return. The two stars, dressed in military uniforms, saluted a cheering crowd at a public sports facility near their former unit in Yeoncheon, about 60 kilometers north of Seoul, during a brief ceremony. Hundreds of fans and journalists gathered at the site, with fans erupting in applause and cheers as the duo arrived. Jimin and Jungkook greeted the crowd with bright smiles, holding bouquets presented by their agency officials. "It's been quite a long time since COVID-19 and then the military, so thank you so much for waiting for us," Jimin said. "I think we can continue to draw the picture we've been envisioning, and we'll prepare and show you an even better side of ourselves." He added: "It was my first time in the military, and honestly, it wasn't an easy place. If you see soldiers passing by, I'd be very grateful if you could even just say a warm word to them." Jungkook, appearing slightly flustered, said, "It's been a while since I've been in front of a camera, and I'm a bit embarrassed because I didn't even put on makeup, so I don't know what to say." He went on to thank the fellow soldiers who served alongside them. The two promised to share more stories during a live broadcast on Weverse before getting into a black minivan and departing. Jimin and Jungkook enlisted together as active-duty soldiers in December 2023 and served in the Army's 5th Infantry Division Artillery Brigade in Yeoncheon. Their discharge follows that of Jin and J-Hope, who completed their service in June and October of last year, respectively, as well as RM and V, who were discharged Tuesday. The seven-member group is expected to reunite after Suga, who is currently serving as a social service agent due to health issues, completes his duty June 21. (Yonhap)

Former Riize member Seunghan to debut solo in July under new identity 'XngHan'
Some international fans still call for the K-pop singer's return, blaming SM Entertainment for his departure XngHan, formerly Seunghan of SM Entertainment's boy group Riize, is set to return to the spotlight with his solo debut in late July — nearly nine months after stepping away from the group amid personal controversies. According to SM Entertainment on Thursday, the singer will now promote under the stage name 'XngHan,' a stylized form of his Korean name pronounced the same but spelled with an 'X' to signify 'infinite potential and crossover.' The agency said the new name reflects his ambition to defy fixed stereotypes and limitations as an artist. 'This new journey begins in July, and XngHan aims to craft boundary-pushing performances and experiences with creatives who align with his evolving vision,' SM Entertainment said in a statement. XngHan debuted as a member of Riize in September 2023, but halted all activities just two months later amid growing backlash over his private life. Controversy first emerged in August that year, before the group's debut, when several private photos were leaked online, including one of him lying in bed with a woman and another showing him smoking in public in Japan. He also faced criticism after a leaked Instagram Live conversation with Big Hit Music's boy group TXT's Soobin included comments referencing a female idol. Riize has since continued as a six-member act, releasing hits such as 'Love 119' and 'Boom Boom Bass.' SM Entertainment initially announced his return to Riize in October but reversed the decision just two days later following a surge of negative reactions from Korean fans. His departure from the group was confirmed later that month, leaving his status uncertain for nearly a year. In a handwritten letter shared at the time, Seunghan apologized to fans and his former bandmates, writing, 'I don't want to cause them any more harm. I truly love Riize and sincerely hope they continue to be loved.' Despite the controversy, some international Riize fans have continued to support him. In an email sent to The Korea Herald last month, they wrote, 'Though he committed no wrongdoing, SM failed to defend him publicly or ensure his safety.'

Road to Yeoncheon lined with love as BTS' Jimin, Jungkook are discharged
Hundreds of fans gather in a town nearly 80 kilometers from Seoul to mark the occasion YEONCHEON, Gyeonggi Province — Just a day after RM and V were discharged from the military, fellow BTS members Jimin and Jungkook stood before a crowd of some 500 fans Wednesday morning at Yeoncheon Public Stadium in Gyeonggi Province, marking the end of their 18-month mandatory military service. Wearing their uniforms, the two arrived in a black vehicle and stepped out to a roaring welcome from local and international fans. They saluted and shouted 'Unity!' before offering brief words of thanks, both appearing bashful as they reconnected with their supporters after a long absence. 'It's been quite a long time, from COVID-19 to military service,' Jimin said. 'Thank you so much for waiting. I think we can pick up where we left off and keep painting the picture we've been working on. We'll prepare even better things to show you.' Reflecting on his service, he added, 'It was my first time in the military, and honestly, it wasn't that easy. If you ever see soldiers passing by, I'd be very grateful if you could offer them kind words.' Jungkook, smiling shyly, said, 'It's been a while since I've stood in front of cameras. I didn't even put on makeup today, so I feel a bit awkward and don't really know what to say.' He added, 'To my fellow soldiers and seniors who finished their service earlier — thank you for enduring everything together with us.' Due to the large turnout, the two completed their remarks in just under 20 minutes before boarding their vehicle and leaving the site. Enlisting together, discharging side by side Jimin and Jungkook enlisted together in December 2023 as active-duty soldiers in the Army's 5th Infantry Division. Jimin served as an artilleryman and Jungkook as a cook. Both completed their service in the same unit, with their discharge ceremony held at 8:00 a.m., an hour earlier than RM and V's 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Despite the early hour, fans from around the world filled the area near the event site, waving banners and fan sticks in support of the two stars. Some even climbed to the low rooftop of the stadium next to the open ground where the two K-pop stars appeared, trying to get a better view of the pair. Although the discharge location and time were officially released only to media outlets, news had already spread after RM and V's ceremony the day before, leading fans to travel nearly 80 kilometers from Seoul to Yeoncheon in hopes of catching a glimpse of Jimin and Jungkook. From the moment fans entered Yeoncheon from Seoul, celebratory banners stretched along the road, spaced every 50 meters. Each carried personal and passionate messages such as, 'Jimin, we love you. Congratulations on your discharge,' 'We've waited for this day when Jimin comes to catch us,' and 'Golden treasure Jungkook, time to soar again.' A Brazilian fan, who requested anonymity, shared, 'This is my first time in Korea and I had never even heard of this town before, but I just had to come to see Jimin.' Another fan from Indonesia said, 'I'm so happy Jimin has returned safe and healthy. Now that he's back with us, I feel so happy again.' Full-group appearance expected soon Ahead of their much-anticipated musical return as a group, fans are likely to see all the BTS members except for Suga together soon. The group will hold their annual debut anniversary event, '2025 BTS Festa,' at Kintex in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, on June 13 and 14. On those same days, J-Hope's solo encore concert is scheduled at nearby Goyang Sports Complex, raising expectations that the other members may appear as guests. Meanwhile, Suga, who is currently serving as a social service worker, is set to be discharged on June 21.
