Local library opens applications for upcoming Writer and Author's Symposium

Previous coverage of the Dayton Metro Library. DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Dayton Metro Library is now receiving applications for its 2025 Writer and Author's Symposium. This is an exciting opportunity for writers to engage with the vibrant local community. There are two open roles for the event. Featured Writers: These writers will be able to directly engage with readers, promote and sell their books. Facilitators: A collection of writers, publishers, and editors who will critique the first ten pages of an emerging writer's work. This will help them improve their work and give them vital feedback. Any writer in the Miami Valley interested in either position for the Symposium can apply here, by of before Friday, July 11. Dayton Library to host senior pizza parties with college help If selected, the DML will contact the writer with additional information. Anyone can visit the Symposium, which will be held on Saturday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., throughout the Main Library downtown. There will be workshops, mini writing-themed activities and an exploration of local authors. Registration is not required. DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Dayton's Mayor Jeffrey J. Mims Jr. wrote about his pride for Dayton while hosting the 2025 NATO Spring Parliamentary Assembly. 'I want to express how proud I am of Dayton for once again demonstrating its outsized impact on the international stage. Our city, long recognized for its pivotal role in brokering peace through the 1995 Dayton Peace Accords, was honored to host global leaders and showcase our continued legacy as a place where diplomacy and progress converge,' wrote Mims. He thanked everyone in our community for their patience and flexibility. 'Your hospitality and sacrifice did not go unnoticed,' wrote Mims. 'With NATO Parliamentary Assembly President Marcos Perestrello personally thanking Dayton residents for warmly welcoming his international delegation and staff, and for showing the best of our Midwestern spirit.' He highlighted the crucial role Dayton played in helping to end the Bosnian War 30 years ago. He also spoke on both Dayton's innovative past and lucrative future. Ohio AG honors middle-schoolers for anti-violence essays

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost recognized nine Springfield middle-school students for their essays on Tuesday. These essays were written for the annual Do the Write Thing Initiative. Students shared their perspective on violence and community safety. 'Writing about violence isn't easy, … but your essays were powerful, thoughtful and eye-opening,' said Yost in a video addressing the Springfield finalists. 'You're giving all of us a window into your world, and that helps us understand how we can work together to make things better.' 'Far from destroyed': Springfield mayor responds to President Trump's address The Do the Write Thing Initiative, started in 1994 by the National Campaign to Stop Youth Violence, allows middle schoolers to share their perspectives and drive change in the community through writing. In 2021, Yost's office and the campaign partnered to bring the initiative to Ohio. Springfield, Canton, Cleveland, Lima, Youngstown and Zanesville all participate annually. The recognition ceremony was held at the John Legend Theater on Tuesday, April 29. Teachers, parents/guardians and community members showed their support for the students. The work of these finalists will be published in a booklet, which will be distributed soon. Dayton Library celebrates AANHPI heritage month events Springfield Schools Superintendent, Dr. Robert Hill, wrote a letter on the impact of the initiative. 'Writing is one of the most powerful ways to express your thoughts, emotions, and experiences,' wrote Dr. Hill. 'By participating in this competition, you have exhibited just how strong and courageous you are.' One student, Jasyla Lambey, will go to Washington, D.C. in July to represent the district at the Do the Write Thing National Recognition.
