Watch nailbiting moment enormous 20ft shark stalks human prey in terrifying Jaws-like scene…before boat makes hasty exit

THIS is the nerve-racking moment a huge 20ft shark emerges from the water before stalking a tiny boat - bringing to mind classic thriller Jaws. Tense footage showed the humongous beast lurking behind the small vessel in a pond on Block Island as it came dangerously close to two passengers. 3 3 3 The video was captured in Rhode Island by local Jen Seebeck who was eating at the Dead Eye Dicks restaurant by Great Salt Pond when she spotted the enormous dorsal, The Atlantic Shark Institute reported. The boat was seen slowly drifting towards the edge of the lake, while two dark shapes appeared to rise from the water. The two fins could easily have been mistaken for two separate sharks, due to the distance between the pair. But shockingly, they were actually part of the same beast - representing the top fin and tail of the 20ft predator. The boat carrying two passengers then started to speed away, possibly following the crew's sudden realisation. The nailbiting scene has sparked comparisons to the classic film Jaws - which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. One person even referenced Steven Spielberg's shark thriller in the video, as they shouted: 'There's a shark in the pond!' It is currently unclear what exact species the nimble shark captured in the footage is. The Atlantic Shark Institute said: "Sharks are arriving in Rhode Island daily as water temperatures continue to rise and more and more species of shark find them suitable to their liking. 'Hopefully this shark will find its way out of Great Salt Pond soon and continue on its way!' Block Island has recently been named one of the 10 best summer destinations in the United States, according to USA Today. It comes after another enormous shark was spotted dangerously near a beach in a popular Spanish tourist spot. A viral video showed the colossal beast skulking around the waters just off the coast of Marbella. And earlier this month, the biggest shark ever tagged by researchers was spotted prowling up the US east coast. Known as "The Contender", the massive white shark was seen skulking around the North Carolina coast. The behemoth was previously seen following the Gulf Stream south near Florida. Weighing 1,600 pounds, the beast was first tagged on January 17 this year about 45 miles off the Florida-Georgia border. It was the largest ever shark tagged by research group OCEARCH in the area.

Terrifying moment massive shark trails boat as onlooker screams line from Jaws

Footage shows two people in a small boat at a popular holiday spot in Rhode Island, in the United States, when suddenly onlookers see a massive shark behind them A massive 20-feet shark was filmed at a popular holiday resort with an onlooker heard screaming a line from the famous Jaws film as it lurked by a small boat. Diners eating by the beach were suddenly alarmed to see the predator lurking in the water and worryingly close to a boat with those onboard apparently unaware. The sea was looking calm in the footage when the fin of the shark appeared from the water behind the boat which had two people in it. A shout came from a man amid general chatter in a restaurant saying: 'There is a shark in the pond.' It was followed by general laughter before other people realised that he was actually being serious with the 20-feet predator moving through the water. ‌ ‌ It is a reference to a scene in Jaws, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, where a crowd shouted out that a shark had entered a tidal pond where children were playing in a boat. And it happened in real life in the water at Block Island, Rhode Island, in the US, where the fin was seen cutting through the water by diners at Dead Eye Dicks on Great Salt Pond. But fortunately the boat was heading the other way from the shark and there was no attack like in the film. The footage was shared online by the Atlantic Shark Institute who commented that they had received calls about the sighting of the predator. ‌ 'Sharks are arriving in Rhode Island daily as water temperatures continue to rise and more and more species of shark find them suitable to their liking,' it stated. 'Hopefully this shark will find its way out of Great Salt Pond soon and continue on its way!' It also said: 'We got some wonderful video but loved this one from Jen Seebeck who was enjoying dinner at Dead Eye Dicks when she noticed the fin slicing through the water inside Great Salt Pond. Clearly a very large shark and reminiscent of a scene from Jaws on this 50th anniversary of the film. Can you guess what the species is?' Atlantic Shark Institute executive director Jon Dodd said the shark in the video is a basking shark, estimated to be approximately 20 feet long with a large dorsal fin. The basking shark is the second-largest fish species after the whale shark and live on tiny plankton. They are commonly spotted in southern New England waters in late spring, according to the New England Aquarium. Basking sharks can be mistaken for great white sharks but they have pointed dorsal fins, while the basking sharks have rounded fins.

'There's a shark in the pond!': 20-foot predator startles Rhode Island diners

'There's a shark in the pond!': 20-foot predator startles Rhode Island diners (Video credit: atlantic_shark) Memorial Day diners at a popular seaside restaurant on Block Island were treated to more than just seafood this week, they witnessed a massive 20-foot shark gliding through the calm waters of Great Salt Pond, just feet away from a small boat. The startling scene was captured on video by local resident Jen Seebeck, who was eating at Dead Eye Dicks, a waterfront restaurant overlooking the pond. The footage shows the shark's enormous dorsal and tail fins cutting through the surface as onlookers gasp. At least one person can be heard shouting the now-iconic phrase from the 1975 film Jaws, 'There's a shark in the pond!' The Atlantic Shark Institute, which reported the sighting, said the shark's species has not yet been identified, but estimated its length to be around 20 feet. The sighting instantly evoked comparisons to the legendary movie, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Close call on calm waters A small boat was seen cautiously motoring away from the powerful predator as it swam through the pond, which connects to the open ocean. Though sharks occasionally make their way into shallow or enclosed waters, the presence of such a large specimen in the small, tourist-frequented Great Salt Pond is rare and unsettling. 'Sharks are arriving in Rhode Island daily as water temperatures continue to rise and more and more species of shark find them suitable to their liking,' the Atlantic Shark Institute wrote in a social media post. 'Hopefully this shark will find its way out of Great Salt Pond soon and continue on its way!' Shark season begins Marine experts say the sighting, while dramatic, is not entirely out of the ordinary. As waters warm up along the Northeast coast, various shark species, including Great Whites, migrate closer to shore in search of food. Montauk, New York, just across the water, has already reported a large Great White shark sighting earlier this month via drone footage. 'This is consistent with seasonal behaviour,' marine biologists noted. 'As fish and other prey move closer to shore during the summer months, sharks naturally follow.'

20-foot shark trails behind tiny boat on Block Island, sparking ‘Jaws' comparison: ‘There's a shark in the pond!'

Rhode Island diners got to feast their eyes on a massive 20-foot shark lurking dangerously close to a small boat in a pond on Block Island, according to authorities. Local Jen Seebeck recorded the humongous dorsal and tail fins of the blood-sniffer cutting through the water on Memorial Day while chowing down at local eatery Dead Eye Dicks located on Great Salt Pond, The Atlantic Shark Institute reported. A pair of boaters motored away from the massive shark that was in the saltwater pond on Block Island. Experts said the sighting, though a bit early in the season, was normal for this time of year. As summer draws more fish to the shores, experts say sharks will follow, but chances of an unwanted encounter are low.

'Massive' Shark Was Spotted Near Rhode Island Town

Residents and tourists on Rhode Island's Block Island were treated to quite a sight on Memorial Day: a "very large" shark making its way around the Great Salt Pond. In a now viral video, taken by a woman named Jen Seebeck from the deck of a nearby seafood restaurant, you can see the shark's dorsal and tail fins moving through the water behind a small boat. You can also hear someone in the background say "There's a shark in the pond" in a quintessential New England accent. The Atlantic Shark Institute shared footage of the incident on its official social media accounts, along with some more information. "We got a number of calls yesterday as people on Block Island, RI were treated to quite the scene, kicking off the 2025 summer season!" the Institute wrote. "We got some wonderful video but loved this one from Jen Seebeck who was enjoying dinner at Dead Eye Dicks when she noticed the fin slicing through the water inside Great Salt Pond. Clearly a very large shark and reminiscent of a scene from Jaws on this 50th anniversary of the film." The Atlantic Shark Institute also solicited guesses as to the species of the shark. While the image of the creature creeping through the water may have given off Jaws vibes, this was not a deadly great white. Instead, it was a basking shark, according to the Institute's executive director Jon Dodd. "They are harmless filter-feeders but that wouldn't matter much if you were in the water when one came cruising by," Dodd said, adding that this particular species eat plankton and are usually found in the ocean. "This guy made a mistake," Dodd said of the shark being in the pond. "It's the first one this year, but it won't be the last." Whenever the next mistake happens, we can bet there will be someone there to capture it on camera again.
