Screen Queen TV Reviews: Survivor: Australia V The World, Invasion, The Rookie & Amanda Knox drama

Gutted. That's the only way to describe how I felt upon reading that long-time Survivor Australia host Jonathan La Paglia (or JLP to his friends and fans) would be stepping away from his beloved show at the end of this final Australia V The World season. He posted the news on June 30, and as he explained, he never saw it coming. 'Australian Survivor has seen some of the most epic blindsides over the last 10 years, but this one might just be the craziest of them all . . . because it happened to me,' he wrote on social media. 'I received a call from the network thanking me for all my hard work and dedication to the show but for next season they are 'going in a different direction'.' And just like that — our world was rocked. I'm just not buying Ten's whole 'taking things in a new direction'' excuse; I suspect the decision had more to do with budget than anything else. I think I speak for all (passing and ardent) fans when I say JLP WAS Aussie Survivor and he will be sorely missed. Ten years ago, he stepped in to fill Jeff Probst's very big shoes in the local version of this long-running reality show — a seemingly impossible ask. And he not only exceeded expectations, but won fans both here and internationally. Rumours are swirling that two-time Survivor Australia winner and Perth lad-about-town David 'Golden God' Genat might step into the hosting role. He's competing in this season, alongside fan faves George from Bankstown, Luke Toki, Shonnee and many familiar faces from the US series and other international seasons. Don't get me wrong, he's a formidable competitor: he recently won Deal Or No Deal Island in the United States, a game show hybrid that saw him walk away with the biggest cash prize in the history of network television ($US5.8 million dollars!). But is he host- worthy? In my dreams, Jeff announces his retirement and JLP slides seamlessly into his hosting duties in the US. Until then, I'll watch him one last time — and wordlessly shake my fist at this utterly head-scratching decision. I've spoken before of my shock at discovering you guys absolutely LOVE The Rookie. Having now watched a few eps, I'm struggling to fully comprehend why , though this column is nothing if not a safe space, and who am I to judge? After all, during lockdown in Melbourne in 2020, I watched every episode of Escape To The Chateau, got to the end, then started at the beginning and watched them all again. So yeah, I get it. Anyway, good news: this week sees the premiere of the newest, seventh season. It's coming to 7Plus, whose team reliably informs me it's the most-streamed show on their platform right now — go off, Rookie fans! Enjoy this latest crop of eps. You've seen Claire Hooper's local version, now check out the original, with everyone's favourite writer/producer/podcaster at the helm. Interested to know how you think it stacks up. Does the truth exist if no one believes it? That's the question this new eight-part drama asks, as it delves into the strange-but-true story of American student Amanda Knox, who was falsely accused of murder while studying in Perugia in 2007. She's an EP on this, alongside Monica Lewinsky — it's getting lots of buzz. Love yourself a high-concept alien invasion series (we're looking at YOU The 100 fans)? The third season of this cult show drops this week.

Returning Survivor player Shonee Fairfax on the big secret one player was hiding

Don't miss out on the headlines from Entertainment. Followed categories will be added to My News. Some of Australian Survivor's most popular players do battle against big international names in the franchise when Survivor: Australia V The World debuts this weekend. And in a game where information is everything, there's some tension in episode one over the fact that local winner David Genat and international champ Pavarti Shallow have a connection that's undisclosed to the majority of their fellow players – they'd both recently competed together on another reality show, Deal or No Deal Island. The news that the two had already worked together on a different reality show was enough to send some players into a tailspin – but Genat was keeping an even bigger secret: He'd won the season, and with it an astonishingly large cash prize of USD $5.8 million (around $AU9 million). Don't miss a ding! Never miss the latest entertainment news from Australia and around the world — download the app direct to your phone. David Genat fronted up to Survivor: Australia v The World... ...after a season-winning stint on Deal Or No Deal Island. Picture: Supplied He won Australian Survivor: All Stars in 2020, earning $500,000 in prize money, after previously competing on Australian Survivor: Champions v Contenders. Unbenownst to his fellow Australia V The World players, Genat was entering the game a newly-minted multi-millionaire - probably not the sort of news that would endear you to your tribemates and want them to give you a chance of winning yet again. Fellow Australian Survivor mainstay Shonee Bowtell, also competing this season, confirmed to that the players had no idea there was a newly-minted $9-million-dollar man in their midst. 'I have never even heard of the show, Deal Or No Deal Island?' she said. Fellow player Shonee says she had no idea David had just won millions on another show. Four-time player Shonee back in her first season. Picture: Channel 10. 'I knew from conversations that he had been on it, but I didn't know that he had won. He kept it all under wraps, so we didn't know. And to be honest I still don't even understand the concept of the show! But seriously, he's rolling in it... leave a couple of pennies for the rest of us.' Bowtell's appearance on this season cements her as the Australian player with the most days in the game, having already lasted 47 days in Champions vs Contenders, 42 in All Stars and 35 in Heroes vs Villians. Now a mum to a young son and with another baby on the way, Bowtell said the short, sharp nature of this season (just 16 days in total) helped persuade her to break away from life as a new mum and try her luck on Survivor for a fourth time. 'It was such a hard decision because I was only four months post-partum,' she said of getting the call to compete. The Aussie contingent on Survivor: Australia v The World. ...and the international players in the mix. 'So I was like, are you guys serious? But I think the thing that really enticed me was that it was a short season. I wouldn't have been able to do a full season at that time... but also to get the chance to play against these incredible [American] players like Pavarti, Cirie and Tony... I thought, I don't think that's going to happen again. It's now or never - just go for it.' Bowtell jokes that she's hanging out for a reality TV opportunity that involves 'food and accommodation,' and says she has a 'love-hate relationship' with Survivor. 'There's just something about it... when, as a regular person, do you ever get the opportunity to go and live on a beach and battle the elements? It literally rains non-stop in Samoa. And then you're doing these crazy challenges, putting yourself to the test, building relationships. 'It does seem like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... but here I am four seasons in! It's just too hard to say no.' Survivor: Australia V The World premieres 7:30pm Sunday August 17 on Ten. Deal Or No Deal contestant reveals the measly prizes offered on the Channel Ten game show after guessing briefcase contents correctly

A Deal Or No Deal contestant has revealed the 'measly' prizes on offer on the Channel Seven game show. TikTok user SagalOnline took to the social media platform on Thursday to share a clip of her appearing in the long-running show. The footage showed a contestant choosing Sagal to open her briefcase, saying: 'I think I'll choose number ten because you look stunning up there.' Sagal then guessed that her briefcase contained $7,500 and, upon opening her case, revealed that her guess was correct. Obviously chuffed with her intuition, Sagal beamed and screamed in elated anticipation as host Grant Denyer and the studio audience erupted with excitement over the correct guess. However, her excitement was soon deflated upon realising the prize she would receive for her efforts. Grant enthusiastically revealed that Sagal was now the proud owner of a Deal Or No Deal board game and $250 in cash. Sagal kept a brave face after receiving the game, which retails for $29, but revealed he true feelings in the comment on the clip. 'A random side quest & why was I screaming like that (I thought I was going to win 100k ugh),' she wrote. Her followers agreed, also taking umbrage with the prize on offer. 'It's a shame back in the day the right pick would've landed her $1000 & now it's a measly $100 & a board game,' one commented. Another said 'they robbed you,' to which Sagal replied: 'Don't worry, I'll be back.' A third offered: 'Girl i would be posting this clip everywhereee if i was you.' 'LMAOOOOO! I would chuck it in my LinkedIn if I could,' Sagal jokingly replied. It was a different story for fellow game show contestant David Genat, who recently took home the largest prize ever won on a game show. TikTok user SagalOnline took to the social media platform on Thursday to share a clip featuring her appearing on the long-running show hosted by Grant Denyer (pictured) After correctly guessing the contents of her briefcase, Sagal was rewarded with a deal Or No Deal board game Sagal kept a brave face after receiving the game, which retails for $29, but revealed he true feelings in the comment on the clip The Australian Survivor star, who won Australian Survivor: All Stars in 2020, had taken the crown on the USA show Deal Or No Deal Island. The 45-year-old Aussie model walked away with US$5.8million from the NBC series, which comes in at a cool AU$9.2million. Channel Seven caught up with David in Los Angeles in March following the airing of his landmark win. When asked how it feels becoming an instant multimillionaire, David did not struggle to find an answer. 'It feels pretty good, man. I've got to say it feels pretty, pretty, pretty good. It's amazing,' he gushed. The reporter then asked if it was a tough task keeping his eye-watering win a secret for six months. David then revealed he had to keep his mouth shut for even longer while admitting he still hadn't been paid, despite his episode being filmed nearly eight months prior. 'No, it's longer. We filmed in August so it's been really wild, and I haven't gotten the money yet.' The reality star was not concerned about his lack of payment, adding: 'That's a good thing.' Nonetheless, David added that he would be keeping an eagle eye on his bank balance over the coming weeks. 'I think you've got 90 days from the final ep,' he said.
