Deal Pier: Second phase of improvement works approved by council
A budget for the second phase of repairs to a Kent pier has been approved after surveys found significant storm damage. Deal Pier has already undergone £140,000 worth of repairs as part of efforts to ensure the historic structure survives long-term. The £1m budget allocation was signed off by Dover District Council's (DDC) cabinet on Monday, the Local Democracy Reporting Service says. A DDC officer explained that boat surveys undertaken in spring had highlighted the need for remedial works to be undertaken on the concrete legs of the pier. They said that, despite this, the general structure was considered to be in "fair to good condition"."Given the structure is over 70 years old this is good news," the officer to the access stairs to the lower deck and overhead beams were successfully completed in autumn and winter last year, at a cost of £140, the £1m budget now approved, officers plan to put out a contract to tender for the concrete repairs after which the matter will return to the will then assess whether they can also afford cathodic protection - a technique used to prevent the corrosion of submerged or underground metallic are set to take place in spring and summer chief executive Nadeem Azeez said that while the concrete repairs were necessary, the cathodic protection would be "an enhancement"."Probably just doing the concrete repairs would certainly give it another 30, 40 or 50 years of life, cathodic protection will give it a bit more," he added.

English seaside town reveals plans for £1million upgrades of its famous pier
ONE of the UK's most famous piers is set to get a massive £1million upgrade. Deal Pier, in Kent, dates back to 1838, although has been rebuilt twice since then. 3 And new plans to upgrade the pier have been revealed. It includes replacing the covering on the six pier legs, as well as works to reduce the corrosion underwater. Dover District Council's (DDC) said the works will 'secure the valued asset for future generations to enjoy'. The 1,026ft pier was first destroyed in 1857 due to storm damage. It was rebuilt, only to be destroyed when a ship crashed into it in 1940. The current pier structure was opened in 1957 by Prince Philip. It has already undergone a £140,000 renovation, upgrading some of the structures. The main attraction on the brutalist pier is Deal Pier Kitchen, serving food and drink right at the end. The Sun's Emma Ledger previously visited the pier in Deal. She said: "It stretches out from the wide pebbled beach, dotted with traditional fishing boats. I live by one of the UK's best beaches - it has amazing pubs, fewer crowds and even views of France "Above the waves, the newly refurbished Deal Pier Kitchen is the perfect spot for a cuppa and chill. "Gaze across the sea and on a clear day you can even spy France. "Locals swim all year round – pack your cossie if you're feeling brave." A new attraction is even coming to Deal soon. The £40million Seahive will have a massive artificial surf lagoon, as well as well as a 120 room hotel and skatepark. The Times named Deal as one of the best places to live in the UK too, back in 2022. In the mean time, we've rounded up the best hidden bays and beaches across Kent. 3
