Netizens worldwide rally for justice for Zara Qairina

KUALA LUMPUR : The death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir has resonated not just at home but has gained international attention, as people in a number of countries have come forth to express their outrage. In Singapore, Facebook page Death Kopitiam Singapore wrote: "The cries for help of a helpless girl. The cries of a community at her death. The disillusionment of a nation." Meanwhile, in Hatyai, Thailand, schoolgirls in uniform held up posters with Zara's face, emblazoned with the words "Justice for Zara." One Thai girl posted an especially emotional post dedicated to Zara. "I ask everyone from around the world to join in shouting for justice for our little sister. She was a Malaysian who was attacked and killed. "I pray that you receive justice, little one. May the perpetrator be caught, and may you rest in peace in a serene land. With love and concern from your Thai sister #Justiceforzara #justiceforzaraqairina," she wrote. Similarly, in Indonesia, students shared similar messages and posts online. As far away as the United Kingdom, a Twitter user, Andy (@andychester\_), voiced frustration at authorities: "The school, police, hospital and even the Sabah and Education Ministers all failed her from the start. Similar calls were made from people in Brunei, Philippines, South Korea, China, Japan, Cambodia, Myanmar and even Laos, reported a Malay daily earlier. Zara fell from the third floor of her hostel in Papar, Sabah, on July 16 and died the following day. Police today admitted there were shortcomings in the early probe into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, who is now believed to be a victim of bullying. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar S. Muthuvelu said investigations uncovered statements indicating that there was bullying. Kumar also said that a special task force had also found non-compliance with investigation procedures.

Tributes pour in for Yishun cat King Kong that was disembowelled, feeders heartbroken

Tributes pour in for Yishun cat King Kong that was disembowelled, feeders heartbroken In a display of solidarity and grief, Yishun residents have set up a memorial to commemorate King Kong, a community cat who was found dead at Yishun Street 51 on May 9. The tabby cat was allegedly tortured to death, having been disembowelled with its eyes gouged out. One of King Kong's regular feeders suspects that the abuser had placed King Kong on the road to make the cat's death appear like roadkill, reported The Straits Times. Images shared by Facebook user Janet Chin show a table with bouquets of flowers and photographs of King Kong stationed at Block 511A Yishun Street 51, near the road where King Kong was found dead. The memorial corner was set up by Chin, along with the cat's dedicated feeders. Chin noted in her post that one feeder "broke down in tears when she told me what happened that very morning when she saw King Kong's bloodied lifeless carcass". Community members have left notes and cat food to bid farewell to King Kong. Those who wish to pay their respects to the beloved feline may do so before the memorial is cleared on May 19. According to Facebook page Death Kopitiam Singapore , King Kong had been abused before, but was rescued by his latest caretaker. In a post on May 12, the page slammed the "act of torture" and shared the strong impact that King Kong had on residents that knew him. The post said: "He will be remembered for many things, including his distinctive stare, handsome face, the love of birdwatching, and a penchant for purring before his food." Netizens have responded to the post, appalled and demanding justice. One user wrote: "I feel so tortured and sad thinking about his excruciatingly painful last moments. He must have been in extreme pain and fear with no one to help him at all. How can any human subject such an innocent and sweet living being to such inhumane cruelty and torture?" Another commented: "This brutal act to animals is a sign of serious mental imbalance. Hope the perpetrator is caught soonest time. Hope this case is not taken lightly by the authorities. RIP sweet King Kong." The National Parks Board is looking into the matter. King Kong's feeders are also offering a reward for information leading to the identification and conviction of those responsible for its death.
