OBCC to HC: Redevelopment of Cuttack Chandi Temple to be completed by March 2026

Cuttack: Orissa high court recently took stock of the ongoing redevelopment of the Cuttack Chandi Temple after a PIL raised concerns over the safety of the idol during re-construction and sought timely completion of the project.
The PIL was filed by residents Sukanta Mohanty and Debasis Rout, seeking the court's direction for a time-bound plan for the temple's reconstruction and submission of the detailed project report from the authorities concerned.
The HC accepted a preliminary affidavit filed on Aug 7 by the Odisha Bridge and Construction Corporation (OBCC) Limited, which is executing the Rs 70 crore project sanctioned by the state govt in 2022.
OBCC assured that the entire redevelopment, including pending structures and surveillance facilities, will be completed by March 2026.
OBCC informed the court that most of the work has been completed, except the main temple structure, east gate, Yagya Mandap and some ancillary facilities. The agency said construction is being done using traditional methods with the help of skilled artisans, to maintain the original architectural style of the 11th-century shrine.

A technical committee comprising heritage experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the archaeology department is overseeing the entire work to ensure heritage preservation.
In its Aug 7 order, uploaded on Monday, the division bench of Chief Justice Harish Tandon and Justice M S Raman said any further direction related to construction must be routed through the committee to avoid compromising the temple's originality.
The bench allowed petitioners to approach the court again in case of delays or deviations.
The project assumes significance as the temple is dedicated to Maa Chandi, the presiding deity of Cuttack, which attracts more than 25 lakh devotees annually.
State govt had launched the project for integrated development of the temple with focus on revitalising the shrine infrastructure, enhancing facilities for devotees and preserving its rich cultural heritage.
A major component of the project is the construction of a new structure, which involved dismantling the existing temple with careful protection of the 'Garbagriha' (sanctum sanctorum) during the process.
