Tipra Motha demands immediate detection, deportation of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Tripura
The Tipra Motha – a constituent of the ruling BJP-led alliance – has demanded the detection and deportation of all illegal migrants from Bangladesh residing in Tripura. A four-member delegation of the party, led by MLA Ranjit Debbarma, met Governor N Indrasena Reddy and raised the demand on Friday. 'We met the Governor today. The issue is that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has stipulated a 30-day timeframe to start the process of detection and deportation of illegal migrants in Tripura. In other states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Assam, the process has already started. We have demanded that the process be started in Tripura too,' Debbarma told reporters after meeting Governor Reddy. He added that a similar kind of notification was also issued in 2017. The Tipra Motha leader said that not only the illegal migrants, but also those providing shelter to them, must be brought under the purview of the law. Earlier, Debbarma wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the illegal entry of Bangladeshi nationals, urging him to push them back. The Twipra Students' Federation (TSF) has also demanded that the government start the process of detecting and deporting Bangladeshi migrants staying illegally in the state. 'We have seen that other states are doing it. But the Tripura government is silent. We appeal to the government to take strong initiative regarding the notification. We have started the 'clean and drive illegal migrants mission' from today,' Hamal Jamatia, General Secretary, TSF, said. As per a report of the Tripura Police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons, and two Nigerians were arrested between January 1, 2024, and February 28 this year for staying illegally in Tripura. A further breakup of the data shows that 483 illegal foreigners were arrested from August 5, 2024, when the Sheikh Hasina government fell in Bangladesh.

Union Minister Oram assured support for tribal development: Tripura Minister Debbarma
New Delhi/Agartala: Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram has said that the Centre would do all possible to help and take steps for the development and welfare of the tribals in Tripura and their inhabited areas, according to Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma. Tripura Minister Debbarma on Friday said that he met Union Minister Oram in New Delhi and discussed various schemes and plans about the development of tribal areas and welfare of the indigenous people. He said that the Union Minister assured him of all possible help, support and guidance for the all-round development of the tribal areas and welfare of the tribal people. "I have highlighted the issues related to roads, electric and water supply, and modern education facilities in the tribal inhabited areas," Minister Debbarma told the media. He said that the Union Minister stressed that steps were undertaken to bring all tribals into the mainstream of development. Debbarma said that the BJP government in Tripura wants to provide equal developmental opportunities to both tribals and non-tribals. The ruling BJP has an alliance with two tribal based parties – Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) to obtain electoral benefits from the tribals. The TMP, headed by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, a former royal scion, has been governing the politically important Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which has a jurisdiction on over two-thirds of Tripura's 10,491 sq km area and is home to over 12,16,000 people, of which 90 per cent are tribals. Of Tripura's 60 Assembly seats, 20 are reserved for the tribals. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha earlier said that ambitious projects and schemes worth Rs 1,400 crore, funded by the World Bank, are currently underway in the state to improve the socio-economic conditions of indigenous tribes, adding that previously, no government had thought about their welfare. The Rs 1,400 crore would be utilised under the Tripura Rural Economic Growth and Service Delivery Project (TRESP) to further enhance the livelihoods and overall socio-economic status of Janajati (tribal) people. CM Saha said, "We must take a pledge that the works which were not fulfilled and not done yet have to be taken up after discussion in the coming year, and we must move forward to develop the state." Tribals constitute one-third of the total population of four million in Tripura, and they always play a vital role in all spheres of the northeastern state, including electoral politics.

KSS announces modified Roman as official script for Kokborok
Agartala: The Kokborok Sahitya Sabha (KSS) — the apex literary body of Kokborok (dialect spoken by tribals of Tripura) authors, thinkers and poets — announced a modified 'Roman script' as the official script for the language, further escalating the ongoing script controversy. Bikashrai Debbarma, the newly elected chairman of the advisory committee of KSS, said the decision of the Roman script was taken in the 53rd annual conference of the body held on Sunday here. "After consultation during the conference, we have passed five major resolutions and most significant resolution is related to the script issue," he said. A debate over the script selection has been finally resolved as the experts have decided that the modified version of the Roman script will from now on be the official Kokborok script. "We have made some modifications in the script for the linguistic needs of our mother tongue. It doesn't look exactly like the Roman script, which is globally in use as the written form of many languages," Debbarma said.

Pradyot Kishore denied audience with Gomati district magistrate; TIPRA Motha and CPM condemn him
TIPRA Motha, the Tripura BJP's ruling ally, on Monday condemned the incident in which Gomati District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma allegedly denied an audience to its founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma when he arrived at the official's residence without an appointment on Sunday. While Motha's youth and student organisations sought action against the district magistrate and warned of strikes at all government offices in Gomati, the Opposition CPM termed the DM's action 'unacceptable' and 'condemnable'. Pradyot was en route to Agartala after an event in South Tripura when he went to T K Chakma's residence at Udaipur, accompanied by Purna Chandra Jamatia, Chief Executive Member of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which is ruled by Motha. Pradyot told reporters later that he had been trying to contact Chakma but his phone calls were not picked up. 'I didn't come for any of my personal work. There were some issues of Ampi and other areas of Gomati district that I wanted to talk to him about. I have been trying to talk to him for one month. If he doesn't want to meet, what can I say?' he said. The Gomati district magistrate has not officially commented about the incident. The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) said civil servants were expected to cater to the needs of the public 24×7 and that the Gomati district magistrate had failed to live up to this expectation by turning away Pradyot and the TTAADC chairperson. 'We don't want such a DM in Tripura. We request Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha to dismiss this district magistrate at the earliest,' YTF leader Prashamit Debbarma said. The tribal youth organisation also said it would launch a statewide movement and stall work in all government offices as a sign of protest unless Chakma is transferred out of Gomati district immediately. It also claimed Pradyot had been trying to contact him for several weeks to take up some issues related to government work but in vain. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury of the CPM said in a social media post, 'DM, Gomati's behaviour with two public representatives is not at all acceptable and condemnable. Dereliction of duties as a public servant and sheer arrogance.' Pradyot Kishore's appeal Meanwhile, Pradyot urged everyone to be united and refrain from targeting any community for the action of a single person. 'No doubt you might have some anger in your mind that he (Gomati DM) didn't meet nor talk. That's a different thing. Many people say something about the Chakma community. I want to tell you something: connecting a person's action with the entire community will be wrong. That DM could be Bengali, Tiprasa, Debbarma, Jamatia, Hrankhawl, Muslim, Christian or Buddhist. That was his personal action. Please do not associate it with a community. Today when we need to have a united approach, I think that blaming any community or religion will not be good for us,' he said in a video posted on his Facebook page. Pradyot added that many Chakma people supported him and that he had supported them when they faced racial discrimination in Delhi. 'Whenever something wrong happens, when our people are killed in Bangladesh, I have supported them. A man's action should not be used to tarnish an entire community. And I want to tell my people: kindly don't attack the whole community for one mistake of one person. This is my thinking. If you feel that I am showing weakness by saying this, I am not showing weakness. From a king's family, thought should be big and heart should be big,' he added. Later, Pradyot expressed concern over illegal immigration and warned that illegal immigrants could decide the election outcome in 2028. 'You (people) have heard that the home minister and the Supreme Court said that illegal immigrants don't have the right to stay in India. I have been saying this for the last 10 years I have also filed an NRC case. The case is still with the Supreme Court. This is very important because today Rohingya and Bangladeshis are not only coming here but they are getting voter IDs and ration cards.' 'These people will decide who will be our MLAs, MPs, and chief minister in 2028. We should not allow this. So, I ask all my MLAs to talk to SDMs, BDOs, and DM in their respective areas to know who are getting ration cards illegally, who are sitting illegally and who are trying to become voters of India illegally. The day when they become voters, they will play with our future, they will play with your children's future. This is not the time to fight, it is time to unite to stop all these illegal Bangladeshis. We need to save India and Tripura. We need to stop them from getting illegal cards. For this we need to be one,' he added in the Facebook video.

Tripura jumbo corridor to be ready by winter: Minister
Agartala: The state govt has announced plans to complete a dedicated elephant corridor along NH-8 at Teliamura in Khowai district by the upcoming winter season. Forest minister Animesh Debbarma said the safe passage for elephants is under construction in the Atharamura hill range extending to Baramura. Communities near Atharamura foothills have experienced difficulties with wild elephants over several years, with herds damaging crops, homes and local infrastructure while searching for sustenance. "The forest department always tries to look at the incidents in sympathetic consideration for both villagers and the elephants as well. Because of food shortage inside the forest, elephants ravage human habitations. Villagers grow crops for their livelihood, but elephants destroy them," said the minister, referencing incidents in Kalyanpur, Krishnapur and Mungiakami areas. The administration's decision to establish a corridor to the buffer zone stems from the understanding that well-fed elephants within forests are less likely to venture into villages, said Debbarma. The passage, situated on the Assam-Agartala national highway, intends to reduce conflicts between humans and elephants. The region hosts around 40 elephants, predominantly in Khowai, Dhalai and Gomati districts. The forest department implements traditional techniques, modern monitoring systems and community engagement to minimise human-wildlife encounters. "The safe corridor along NH-8 is currently under development. We have informed the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited about our plan for the elephants, and they have agreed to collaborate. The project is likely to be completed by the end of the year," said Debbarma. He also revealed plans for upgrading Sepahijala Zoo to international standards, highlighting recent achievements including the birth of three tiger cubs as evidence of improved facilities.
