Baildon footbridge shut over 'significant safety concerns'
A well-used footbridge may need to be completely replaced after "significant" safety concerns were Dockfield footbridge, in Baildon, has been closed since 12 June when structural engineers said several "critical elements" of the crossing had Council said the concerns related to high and medium pressure gas pipes attached along both sides of the bridge.A spokesperson for the authority said it was in talks with Northern Gas Network, which jointly owns the bridge, about how to proceed. The council said: "A structural assessment has revealed that several critical elements of the bridge have failed, posing a serious risk as the structure can no longer adequately support its weight."For the full replacement to proceed, NGN is required to contribute 50% of the total project costs."One local councillor said the sudden closure had left people "very annoyed" and questioned why the issues were not picked up earlier, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Davies said: "The council say they want to encourage people to walk and cycle but then they close an important well used route with no notice and no explanation."It is a well-used right of way for workers and walkers and the alternative routes across the river are a long way away or people will end up driving to Shipley and round on Dockfield Road."Davies claimed the authority had "known about this issue for years" giving them "plenty of time to formulate a plan so that when it closed work could start straight away and be completed as soon as possible". "Instead of causing the minimum possible inconvenience it seems designed to cause the maximum," she council added: "We understand the disruption this decision may cause to bridge users and the local community, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience."Please be assured that we are actively addressing this issue, and the safety of the public remains our top priority." McCarthy Stone pulls out of Baildon retirement village scheme
The developer has announced it is pulling out of a multimillion-pound regeneration Stone was due to build a 47-apartment development on the former Ian Clough Hall site in without providing any details at to why, the firm said it had "made the decision not to proceed".Bradford Council confirmed the news and said it would be looking to put the site back on the market. A spokesperson from McCarthy Stone said: "Regrettably, we have had to make the decision not to proceed with the Baildon site but continue to explore options to bring our retirement living offering to the area in the future." The hall, off Hallcliffe, has already been demolished, but work on the building has not started despite a planning application being approved in October, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Clough Hall, which included Baildon Library, was demolished in 2023 – with Bradford Council selling the site for the work was announced, the council revealed plans to open a new library in the neighbouring Baildon Club building, which the local authority had purchased, but due to council budget concerns, those plans were later ward councillor Debbie Davies said the news that McCarthy Stone had withdrawn from the site had come as a now fears that site could remain empty, similar to the stalled Westfield shopping centre development that plagued Bradford city centre for years. 'Baildon's hole in the ground' She added: "We are very disappointed that the new library project - that the sale of the land was meant to fund - is on hold with the former Baildon Club standing empty in a prominent position in Baildon and deteriorating by the day."We also now have our own 'hole in the ground' as Bradford did for many years and rather than unsightly fencing around the site we would like to see some basic landscaping done as it is nearly two years since the Ian Clough Hall was demolished and potentially could remain that way for a lot longer."
