Iconic burger chain returns fan favorite item three years later

Those who grew up in Texas share the nostalgia and comfort of stepping into a Whataburger. No matter where you may be, this restaurant is ready to receive its customers with open arms, which oddly enough always feels like returning home, something many chains have tried to achieve but have yet to obtain. Everything from its huge 'W' light-up sign, iconic orange and white stripes, unique restaurant design, and charming Southern hospitality with 24-hour service continues to attract customers worldwide. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter This Texas-based fast food chain is unlike any other because it has maintained the same traditions and great taste for nearly 75 years while remaining innovative by launching new menu items and revamping its stores. Related: Iconic burger chain makes big move to take down McDonald's "It's not just about nostalgia-it's about our commitment to making every Whataburger visit one worth craving, with burgers served hot, fresh, and just the way you like it," said Whataburger President and CEO Debbie Stroud. Getty Images In celebration of its 75th Anniversary and as a thank you to all customers who have stuck by the chain's side, as well as the new ones who remain loyal, Whataburger is returning the beloved Mushroom and Swiss Burger after a three-year hiatus. "You asked, we listened-our Mushroom Swiss Burger is back! Because some legends don't belong in the past... they belong in your hands," said Whataburger President and CEO Debbie Stroud. "This year marks our 75th anniversary, and we wanted to give our customers something they've been asking for," Stroud added. Related: McDonald's menu adds beloved Easter favorite (there's a catch) The reintroduction of this burger comes after over 7,200 Whataburger fans signed a petition asking for it to be returned to the menu. The Whataburger Mushroom and Swiss Burger first launched in 2018, and only a year later, it was named a fan-favorite by the fast food chain due to its huge popularity. However, the beloved burger was mysteriously removed in 2022, never to be seen again. But what makes this burger so special compared to the rest? The Whataburger Mushroom and Swiss Burger consists of two grilled all-beef patties, topped with melted Swiss cheese, creamy au jus sauce, and grilled mushrooms, all sandwiched between a sliced warm bun. Although the relaunch of this beloved menu item is music to many fans' ears, the Whataburger Mushroom and Swiss Burger will not stay on the menu forever. It can be ordered and enjoyed in-store, picked up at the drive-thru, or ordered through the Whataburger app for curbside or delivery. However, once the burger is removed from the menu indefinitely, there is room for new products to be launched or for other banished favorites to come back. Some are still waiting for the return of the infamous Steak Fajitas, which have not been seen since the early 2000s. Whataburger brings back fan favorite not seen in three years. When can you get it?

A Whataburger 'throwback' is back by popular demand. After a three-year break, fans can get their first bites of the mushroom Swiss burger as of April 1 at Whataburger locations nationwide, according to the Texas-based burger chain. It's made with two beef patties topped with Swiss cheese, au jus sauce and 'a generous layer' of grilled mushrooms, all served on a toasted bun, a product description says. Pricing information wasn't immediately available. 'This year marks our 75th anniversary, and we wanted to give our customers something they've been asking for,' Debbie Stroud, president and CEO of Whataburger, said in the release. 'It's not just about nostalgia — it's about our commitment to making every Whataburger visit one worth craving,' Stroud said. Fans have until June 2 before the beloved mushroom Swiss burger leaves menus again. Customers can order it in-store, at the drive-thru or on the Whataburger mobile app. Find your nearest Whataburger here.

Whataburger Museum of Art opening a SXSW gallery

Whataburger is taking its fan art from a digital space to an IRL gallery for the first time. What they did: The beloved San Antonio chain transformed Wanderlust Wine Co. in downtown Austin into the Whataburger Museum of Art for SXSW. How it works: It's open to the public on March 8 and 9, 11am–6pm. A Whataburger food truck will hand out samples of the Monterey Melt on Saturday. Catch up quick: The Whataburger Museum of Art launched on Instagram in 2021, after the pandemic sidelined the company's plans for a brick-and-mortar fan art gallery. Artists tag their work for a chance to be featured. Zoom in: The Austin gallery will feature a range of mediums, including digital works, murals and sculptures. Some will be interactive. The Whataburger Day Dot Room has a white restaurant interior that visitors are encouraged to cover in colorful stickers. The Table Tent Mugshot Wall lets guests snap a picture and then take home a specialty Whataburger 75th Anniversary and SXSW 2025 table tent. It will only be available at the in-person gallery and is a nod to the tradition of collecting table tents. What they're saying:"The creativity of our fans never ceases to amaze us," Whataburger CEO Debbie Stroud said in a statement. "From illustrators and muralists to digital creators, these artists have transformed their love for Whataburger into incredible works of art."
