Coronation Street wedding chaos when bride-to-be Bernie Winter suffers terrifying health scare as she ties the knot with Dev Alahan - amid claims soap is set for 'huge cast cull'
Coronation Street lovebirds Bernie Winter and Dev Alahan are finally set to walk down the aisle in the coming weeks, but their big day won't go off without a hitch. The couple's big day is set to be full of drama including stag party shenanigans, a burglary, surprise proposal, shock collapse and a hospital dash midway through the ceremony. The week starts with the stag and hen parties, with Bernie celebrating her wedding with a low-key hen party in The Bistro after saving money by buying cheap suits for Dev and his son Aadi. But suddenly, word reaches the hens that the boys have hired a pole dancer at the Rovers, and a furious Bernie storms into the pub to find the stags cheering on the performer - is all as it seems? In scenes set it air on Wednesday, August 6, as the big day dawns Dev and Bernie's dream wedding goes from bad to worse when the quads fall ill and have to watch with Joseph on live stream. As she gets ready to walk down the aisle in her unconventional wedding dress, Bernie forgets her lucky charm locket containing the photo of Paul, and when she runs home to get it she disturbs a burglar. Meanwhile the restless guests back at the Bistro are entertained by a song from Debbie Webster who surprises Ronnie with a proposal, will he accept? After such an eventful start to the day, the guests take their seats for the main event and a glowing Bernie walks down the aisle towards Dev to make their vows. With the service about to start, Dev and Bernie share loving looks, but suddenly Bernie struggles to breathe and collapses in front of a shocked Dev. Is the dramatic day about to end in tragedy or will Bernie and Dev tie the knot? Speaking about the chaotic build-up to the big day, actress Jane Hazlegrove, who plays Bernie, said: 'The day goes from bad to worse! 'That's what is so brilliant about Coronation Street, you don't know what you're going to get until you open the page of the script and that's what is so fantastic about how it plays out – we've got this woman raving down the aisle and the next minute she's collapsed and an ambulance is on its way!' Jane also revealed that she had a hand in the design of Bernie's unconventional wedding dress. She said: 'I knew that Bernie wouldn't go down the road of wearing a traditional dress. I had seen some old footage of Elkie Brookes on TV and she was wearing a kaftan. 'I am a big fan of Elkie so that was the initial inspiration, but this is for Bernie so it needed to be a bit extra. 'Our fantastic talented costume department came up with the 1970s style white dress that is a bit Elkie Brookes, a bit Demis Roussos and very Bernie Winter.' It comes after it was reported on Sunday that Corrie and its rival Emmerdale could be hit by a massive cast cull, with proposals to 'cut one in ten cast members' as part of sweeping cost-cutting measures. The broadcaster has announced plans to slash £15million from its budget, after revealing profits have plunged by 44 per cent to £99million for the first half of the year. Now, both soaps are reportedly being targeted in a bid to bring spiralling production costs under control. It has been reported that around 10 per cent of the current cast lists - which include 84 regulars on Corrie and 70 on Emmerdale - are expected to be dropped. Scripts and episode structures are also under review, with producers being told to reduce the number of scenes per episode and tighten shooting schedules. A source told The Sun: 'It's brutal. We've known it was on the cards for a while, but they're really cranking it up now and it's across the soaps. 'They're looking to save millions and Corrie and Emmerdale are the obvious places. They're very expensive shows.' Most actors are contracted per episode and guaranteed a set number annually - a system which is thought to have become unsustainable. Some long-serving cast members are reportedly concerned about their job security, particularly those who rely on a steady income from the soaps. The source added: 'Many who have been there for a long time are reliant on their income staying as it is. 'The amount of cast has spiralled out of control and focusing on dialogue, not action, could also save money.' The proposed cuts come as ITV undergoes a wider restructuring across its daytime programming, with major job losses already hitting shows including Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women.

Inside Soap Awards nominations in full as major category returns after six years
Soap lovers are gearing up for the 29th year of the Inside Soap awards with Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale, and Hollyoaks dominating the nominations list The Inside Soap Awards are officially back for their 29th year and it's shaping up to be a competitive season, as Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks dominate the list of nominees. The awards celebrate the soaps with the biggest storylines, most iconic characters and most emotional exits from the past 12 months, and winners are voted for entirely by the show's fans. Viewers of all major UK soaps, including daytime dramas Home and Away and Neighbours, have the final say in who takes home the coveted trophies. This year's nominations are led by some of the most talked-about plots in recent soap history. On Coronation Street, Debbie Webster's devastating dementia diagnosis struck a chord with viewers, while EastEnders made fans emotional after witnessing Phil Mitchell's mental health struggles play out on screen. In Emmerdale, Robert made waves after crashing Aaron and John's wedding, and Hollyoaks shocked audiences with a gripping and sensitive storyline around teen sexual exploitation. Inside Soap magazine editor Sarah Ellis has spoken about the upcoming ceremony, sharing: "The Inside Soap Awards remain the only trophies of their kind to be voted for entirely by the real experts – the soap viewing public. "Over 90,000 soap fans vote each and every year; and in addition to our list of nominees, our Soap Superstar category allows readers to put forward their own suggestions of who they feel deserves to be honoured. "The past 12 months have been an epic time in soap, and I can't wait to see who the readers of Inside Soap have decided to crown their favourites this year." Also making a return this year is the fan-favourite Best Exit category, which honours the most emotional and unforgettable goodbyes that took place on screen, whether caused by the death of a character or them simply moving on to new ventures. Ellis added: "Sadly, we've had to say goodbye to some truly beloved soap characters over the past 12 months. Who didn't cry their eyes out at Martin's shock death during EastEnders' live episode? And we're still not over poor Craig's tragic demise in Corrie, or the loss of Leyla and Amy in the devastating Emmerdale limo crash. But it's up to the fans which exit will get their vote." Voting for the Inside Soap Awards 2025 opens at midday on Tuesday, July 8, and winners will be announced at a star-studded ceremony in London this September. Axed Coronation Street star confirms she's staying on the cobbles for over TWO years despite falling victim to cast cull
ONE of Coronation Street's axed stars has revealed that she will be staying put with the show for a number of years despite being binned off by bosses. Actress Sue Devaney was confirmed to have been axed last year and it was soon revealed that her exit would form part of a long-running dementia storyline. 3 3 When the news was revealed in late 2024, it was thought that Sue's exit could play out in early 2026 after it was said that she would still be in the programme beyond 2025. However, in a new interview, Sue has confirmed that her stint is MUCH longer than anyone anticipated. Speaking to Lorraine Kelly on her ITV breakfast show, the Debbie Webster actress clarified that she would be with the show until 2027 before her character succumbs to the tragic condition. Sue said to the Scottish TV host: "Well, I know this story is going to go on well into 2027. "Debbie is not going anywhere!" On-screen, Debbie found out she was living with early on-set vascular dementia earlier this year. At present, only her brother Carl is aware of the devastating diagnosis. It has so far been seen to impact Debbie heavily causing her to act erratically, suffer severe mood-swings as well as forgetfulness and clumsiness. Debbie's condition is expected to worsen over the next 24 months before her eventual exit from the ITV soap - much to the dismay of fans. Petitions began to circulate when her axing was revealed in order to reverse the decision by bosses with many insisting that Debbie was Coronation Street 's strongest character amid an ongoing period of criticism for the fledgling soap. Devastating moment Coronation Street icon Debbie Webster discovers she has dementia The Sun previously told how Sue was left devastated over being axed from the show. News of her exit left the actress blindsided, with a source telling The Sun: 'Sue was very shocked when she discovered she was being killed off. 'She was initially very sad and then furious and then upset again. It's taken her a long time to come to terms with it. 'She had no intention to leave the show and couldn't believe it when they called her in and broke the news.' She is one of many names to leave the programme alongside Colson Smith, Luca Toolan, Shelley King, Charlotte Jordan, Sue Cleaver, Daniel Brocklebank, Helen Worth, Paddy Bever and Katy Cavanagh. Corrie cash crisis: shock exits for 2025 ITV bosses are locked in a battle to save the cash-strapped soap. This means that a number of stars have either been axed from or have abandoned the long-running serial drama. Colson Smith - Craig Tinker The character of Craig Tinker has been axed by bosses after 14 years. After he was told of the news in Autumn 2024, Colson Smith confirmed that would be written out of the show with scenes to air later this year. Craig's on-screen mum, Beth Tinker, also left the show in the summer when actress Lisa George was written out from the role. Sue Cleaver - Eileen Grimshaw After 25 years playing Eileen Grimshaw, former I'm A Celebrity campmate Sue Cleaver will quit the show. The Sun on Sunday reported in January that she's already begun to film her exit scenes. However the character will not be killed off in case Sue opts to make a return in the future. Luca Toolan - Mason Radcliffe Bosses decided to axe the teenage character after just 16 months after he first joined the show. Recent scenes saw Mason stabbed by his criminal brothers after his pal Dylan brought a knife in an attempt to defend him. Sue Devaney - Debbie Webster In November 2024, we revealed that Debbie Webster is set to be killed off after 40 years on the cobbles. The character will die as part of a heartbreaking long-running dementia storyline. Charlotte Jordan - Daisy Midgeley The actress became the fifth star to leave Coronation Street in just one month. We revealed that she will bow out of the ITV soap later this year after four years on-screen. Charlotte told sources that she's hungry to see what other opportunities await. Shelley King - Yasmeen Metcalfe The actress has played Yasmeen Metcalfe on the cobbles for the past 11 years and we revealed in January that she finished filming her final scenes. This follows the departure of her on-screen partner Stu Carpenter.
