India's first deluxe train is nearly a century old, was launched on…; not Deccan Odyssey, Maharajas Express, Rajdhani, Golden Chariot, the name is…
Deccan Queen-- India's first deluxe train, embarked on its first journey on June 1, 1930. (File) Deccan Queen: The Indian Railways manages and operates the world's third-largest rail network, which includes luxury trains such as the Maharajas' Express, the Palace on Wheels, the Deccan Odyssey, and the Golden Chariot, that have set new benchmarks for luxury train travel in India and indeed globally. But did you know that India's first deluxe train is nearly a century old, and was launched way back on June 1, 1930 during the British colonial era? Yes, the train in question is the iconic Deccan Queen, aka 'Dakkan ki Rani', which holds the distinction of being the first deluxe train to run in India. Deccan Queen – India's first deluxe train The Deccan Queen, named after Pune's nickname Dakkan Ki Rani (Queen of Deccan), holds the title of being India's first deluxe train, which embarked on its first journey, June 1, 1930, more than 95 years ago. The train's launch marked major milestone for the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, the predecessor of the central railways. Initially, the Deccan Queen had only seven coaches, offering first and second class compartments, setting a new benchmark in luxury train travel for passengers. In 1955, a third-class compartment was added to accommodate more travelers. Notably, the Deccan Queen underwent a major transformation and modernization in 1966 as the Indian Railways upgraded the iconic train with anti-telescopic, steel-bodied coaches. Additionally, the train's interiors also received a much-needed upgrade for enhanced passenger comfort. The remarkable history of Deccan Queen The Deccan Queen, which runs between Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Pune Junction (PUNE), holds many firsts to its name in Indian Railway history. It was the first superfast train in India, the first long-distance electric-hauled train, and the first vestibuled train. It was also the first train in the country to feature a women-only car, as well as a separate dining car. Today, flaunting its iconic cream and Oxford blue exterior with a red band above the windows, the Deccan Queen remains a symbol of luxury train travel in India, which completed 95 years of service on June 1, 2025.

7 Must-See Train Journeys Leading To Mumbai's Beauty
Mumbai stands as the financial capital of India and is a bustling metropolitan city. It is famously known for its street food, Bollywood Studios, and skyscrapers. What is less known is that the city can also be reached through some of the most scenic train routes in India. These rail journeys are rich in culture and provide breathtaking views that encapsulate the essence of India's diverse landscape. Planning to take a trip to Mumbai by train? Here are seven breathtaking train routes to keep in mind, each of which makes the journey equally impressive to the destination. 1. The Konkan Railway: A Coastal Marvel One of the easiest routes to reach Mumbai by train is the Konkan Railway that connects Mangal in Karnataka with Roha near Mumbai. This route runs through Western Ghats and Northwest coastline to offer splendid views of lush green hills, pristine rivers, and tranquil beaches. Other than the beaches, the route has some key highlights like crossing over 2000 bridges and through 92 tunnels. Notable stops include Ratnagiri and pro Sindhudurg. The journey becomes more beautiful during the monsoon season because of the countless waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. 2. Goa Express: The Coastal Beach and Backwaters of Goa People from Delhi or the northern region of India can make use of the Goa Express which takes as much as 16 hours to reach Mumbai from New Delhi making breaks at several stops such as Madgaon. This is how the train captures the attention of many tourists. While the train doesn't cover the full route along the coastline, it does show glimpses of palm-leaved beaches, lifting markets and Goan architecture, which is influenced by Portugal, while on the way to Mumbai. It also has scenic areas filled with forests and portions of the Arabian Sea between Madgaon and Thane. 3. Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central Express: Kerala's Dry Beauty With Heavy Urbanization Watching the scenery while traveling from Ahmedad to Mumbai in the Gujarat Mail or any express train can be quite contrasting as the route covers arid fields. Once the arid areas of Gujarat are passed, the journey transitions into the fertile regions of Maharashtra. Even while approaching Mumbai, watchers can notice a blend of industrial zones and suburban areas. One of the most spectacular views on the walk through this region, is the Vaitarna river bridge where the gleaming water gives a stunning feel. 4. Pune – Mumbai Deccan Odyssey: Enjoying Great Nature Without Losing Luxury The Deccan Odyssey has to be mentioned in this list because of its wonderful luxurious tourist train services. This train route connects Pune to Mumbai and has never a single dull moment with beautiful historic forts and verdant valleys along with quaint little villages. Passengers of the Deccan Odyssey are surely in for a treat as they are gifted panoramic windows that frame the captivating Sahyadri mountain range, achieving a perfect mix of being comfortable while also enjoying the surrounding natural beauty. 5. Nashik – Mumbai Passenger Trains: Vineyards And Temples Nashik, commonly called the 'Wine Capital of India' also serves as another point to reach Mumbai. Local passenger trains are functional from Nashik Road to Mumbai CST showcasing a rural area with lots of vineyards alongside ancient temples. The view becomes breathtaking when the warnings are covered along with tea plantations. This along with the local train style makes the experience so much more genuine. 6. Chennai – Mumbai Express: Beauty of Multiculturalism The route of the Chennai – Mumbai Express covers the significant area of South and Western India including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra. The journey sports different backdrops where every state has something new to offer. Highlights include the backwaters in kerala, coffee estates in Coorg, and the rocky areas of the Deccan plateau. The climax towards the finish point in Mumbai shows the semi-arid area surrounding the city and on the other showing the city itself, also known as the concrete jungle. 7. Delhi – Mumbai Rajdhani Express: Where Sights and Speed Collide The primary focus of the Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani Express is speed and efficiency, but the design includes glimpses of beauty throughout the landscape. It runs through central India crossing Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and further into Maharashtra. Famous features like the Chambal River valley and the Vindhya Range are crossed. Though the main goal is to reach Mumbai in a timely manner, attentive travelers will find plenty to admire along the journey. How Does the Train Travel to Mumbai Stand Out? Among the preferred means of travel, trains are very popular in India because they are cheap, well-connected, and engaging. Passengers, unlike in a flight, are not restricted from seeing the sights, sounds, and even smells of the places they are traveling through. People who intend to travel to Mumbai do know that these train rides will surely be a highlight of their trip. How to Enjoy the Scenery While Traveling By Train: Choose Window Seats: Booking a window seat is ideal for people who want the best view. Take Day Trips: If available, always book trips during the day so you can see more. Pack Snacks and Drinks: Avoid getting tired on the way by packing some snacks. Take Pictures: Always remember to take photos of the gorgeous view. Talk to People: Get to know other passengers and learn more about the local culture. Conclusion Traveling to Mumbai by train is not just a commute but rather a feast for the eyes and a cultural experience. Each route is unique and offers something new. Whether it's the coastal beauty offered by Konkan Railway, the palatial experience on the Deccan Odyssey, or the scenic wonders on the Chennai – Mumbai Express, each has something to offer. The next time you set out for a trip to Mumbai, remember to take the train and let the journey be part of your experience. The journey is just as important as the destination!

In Conversation with Chef Pankaj Bhadouria: From Classroom to Kitchen, and Holidays That Heal the Soul
In a heartfelt episode of Magical Memories, presented by Club Mahindra in association with The Indian Express, celebrated chef and MasterChef India winner Chef Pankaj Bhadouria joins host Khyati Rajanshi to share her inspiring journey of transformation, resilience, and the simple joy of family holidays. Before MasterChef, Pankaj spent 16 years as a teacher. But a TV promo featuring Akshay Kumar sparked a new dream. 'My kids said, 'Mom, you have to go audition—you cook so well!'' she recalls. It wasn't a planned switch, but a heart-led leap, which took her from a 3,000-strong queue in Lucknow to winning MasterChef India – at the cost of a stable job and peer scepticism. 'You're not going for cooking; you're chasing glamour,' she was told. From TV shows and books to her academy and digital content, Pankaj wears many hats. Through it all, her family is her anchor. 'Everything works out when you have love and support surrounding you,' she says. Growing up in Delhi, food and family went hand in hand. Despite losing her father at a young age, Pankaj's memories are rich with warmth. She recalls winter afternoons spent sitting on the kitchen slab with her brother, tearing rotis straight from the pan. 'There was no screen time – just stories, smells, and shared meals,' she says. Both her parents were excellent cooks, and the kitchen was always alive with aromas and activity. Her mother, who learned cooking from her father and grandmother, passed on more than just recipes – she passed on the spirit of togetherness. For Pankaj, early vacations meant trips to Gazipur or Himachal. With success, holidays became meaningful pauses to connect. A favourite was the Deccan Odyssey luxury train ride with her family across Mumbai, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. 'It was our way of being tourists and royalty at the same time,' she laughs. Another highlight is Disneyland in the U.S. after a work trip. 'I always wanted to go, and so did my daughter. It was pure magic at every age.' From camping in Kanatal to European tours and Indian adventures, her travels are about people, not just places. 'Even today, dinner is a non-negotiable family event. We debrief, share laughs, and bond,' she says. In true chef fashion, Pankaj's holiday memories often involve food. From the men in her family cooking a feast on a trip to sharing sandwiches in European convenience stores, meals have always been memory markers. And traditions run deep. 'Christmas is big in our home – Secret Santa, a decorated tree, and baking together as a family,' she shares. 'We may travel the world, but these rituals ground us.' Make Your Family Holidays Magical From sun-kissed beaches to lush jungles, serene backwaters to majestic hills, vast deserts to captivating international locations – Club Mahindra has it all!
