Parker: Engineering firm Motus Consult builds from Calgary beginnings to national reach

Two engineers who previously worked at the same firms both moved to Chestermere before they really got to know each other, and naturally talked business during leisure times. They had both left larger engineering companies and the discussion came around to how they would manage things if they started their own company. The dream is now a reality, with a company that started small but is now flourishing and has quickly earned the respect of owners, architects and contractors. Article content Article content Both raised in southern Alberta, farm boy Breukelman's practical approach to life naturally developed into a love of engineering. He earned a bachelor of science in engineering at Western University, and then went on to study wind engineering and structural dynamics. His early employment was with wind engineering firms to understand wind effects on buildings, and worked with developers and architects to develop building designs to minimize wind effects. Article content Article content With more than 30 years of global industry experience — including an Associated with Motioneering project in Taipei — Breukelman moved to Calgary in 2014 and returned to classical structural engineering — becoming known for his client-centric focus, collaboration skills and strong technical experience. Article content Born in Lethbridge, Deemter began his professional career as a journeyman Red Seal carpenter. He graduated as a Civil Engineering Technologist at SAIT and went on to earn a degree in civil engineering at Lakehead University. Deemter has since combined his construction experience with engineering knowledge to perform evaluation, restoration, design development and construction administration. Article content Article content Bringing these two different perspectives together has allowed the co-founders of Motus Consult to consistently step out of the box to provide practical solutions throughout all phases of a project. Article content Motus — a Latin word that translates to movement, progress — is an engineering company specializing in structural and enclosure. Launched in Calgary, Breukelman relocated to Langley, B.C., and opened an office to serve that province, and since then Motus has been joined by Peter Olendzki as principal in its Ontario office. Article content Also a former work colleague of the founders, Olendzki is a specialist in digital modelling with many years of experience, with a strong portfolio from schematic design through contract administration. Article content At the outset, the jobs came as condominium and custom residential projects. Soon after, the company was contracted to perform for larger and more challenging commercial and industrial assignments.
