Avg wholesale tomato prices dip as supply triples in a week
Nashik: The average tomato price at Pimpalgaon APMC, the country's largest wholesale tomato market, declined 15% over the past week — from Rs 45 per kg on Friday (Aug 1), to Rs 38 per kg on Thursday (Aug 7). Even between Wednesday and Thursday, there was a marginal 8% price drop. This is because of an increase in supply. The arrivals of tomatoes tripled during the week, escalating from 8,000 crates a day on Friday (Aug 1), to 25,000 crates on Thursday, Aug 7. Each crate contains 20kg of tomatoes. On Wednesday, 30,000 crates of tomatoes were auctioned at Pimpalgaon. On Thursday, the average wholesale tomato price was recorded at Rs 765 per crate at Pimpalgaon. In comparison, on the same day last year, the average wholesale tomato price was Rs 551 per crate with the arrival of 18,500 crates. By Aug 15 of the previous year, Pimpalgaon was getting 57,000 crates per day. According to traders, the arrival of the new kharif crops have commenced at the APMC and are gradually increasing. The average wholesale tomato price may further decline to Rs 30 per kg in the next couple of weeks as arrivals could increase to 50,000 crates per day. In the retail markets of Nashik city, good quality tomatoes were being sold for about Rs 60 per kg on Thursday, with prices expected to drop further to Rs 50 per kg in the coming days. When contacted, Deepak Gavli, an official from Pimpalgaon APMC overseeing the tomato section, said, "The arrival of the new crops has started in the district. This led to an increase in the arrival of tomatoes at the APMC last week, resulting in a drop in the average wholesale price. " He added, "Currently, the arrival of tomatoes increased to 30,000 crates per day, which may exceed 50,000 crates per day by Aug 15. The new tomato crop is being harvested in Kalwan, Satana, Malegaon, Deola, Yeola, Sinnar, Kopargaon, and other talukas." "Tomatoes are being distributed to Mumbai, Thane, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and other parts of the state. The supply may continue increasing over the next two months," Gavli had added. Tomato wholesale prices up 28% amid supply drop
Nashik: Tomato prices in Maharashtra's largest wholesale markets, including Pimpalgaon and Nashik Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs), surged by 28% on Monday. The average wholesale price for tomatoes hit Rs45 per kg, a significant jump from Rs35 per kg recorded on Saturday — the last market day of the previous week. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now These key markets are crucial suppliers of tomatoes to Gujarat, Mumbai, Thane, other parts of Maharashtra, and even some areas of Uttar Pradesh. This latest spike contributes to a 150% increase in the average wholesale tomato price over the past 10 days. On July 18, the price stood at Rs18 per kilogram. This sharp increase is primarily attributed to a notable drop in supply failing to meet existing demand. The arrival of tomatoes in Nashik APMCs declined from over 10,500 crates a day around two weeks ago to around 6,500 crates per day on Monday. One crate contains 20 kg of tomatoes. In the retail markets of Nashik city, the price has doubled in the last 10 days from Rs 25 per kg to Rs 50 per kg. The price is now expected to increase to the range of Rs 60 and Rs 65 per kg in the next couple of days. According to the farmers, some of their produce got damaged due to heavy rainfall in the last two months. The traders, however, said the upward trend is likely to continue for another fortnight or more until the new produce reaches the markets. When contacted, Rajendra Khare, an official from Nashik APMC overseeing the tomato section, said the rainfall damaged tomato crops, causing a drop in the arrivals of the produce. "The arrival of tomatoes has dropped by around 40% in the last fortnight," he added. Deepak Gavli, an official from Pimpalgaon APMC, who looks after the tomato section, said the price trend will be upward for the next 15 days. "The prices will drop to some extent by mid-August after the new crops start arriving at the market," he added.
