School ordered to pay Rs 1L compensation for service deficiency

Rourkela: The district consumer disputes redressal commission , Sundargarh-1, has ordered a private residential school to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation to a student's father for harassment and deficiency in service . The commission directed the school principal to refund the remaining fees and pay an additional Rs 10,000 as litigation expenses within 30 days. Failure to comply will attract 9% annual interest until realisation, the commission ordered. The case was filed by Deepak Kumar Singh (41), a Sunaripada resident, whose daughter is enrolled in the school's Plus 2 commerce programme. After paying Rs 1,40,300 in admission fees, the girl spent just over a month at the institution before discovering that the facilities and education quality fell short of what was mentioned in the prospectus. Despite multiple attempts by Singh to address these concerns with the school authorities, including written applications dated July 19 and Aug 28, 2024, requesting a transfer certificate and fee refund, the school remained unresponsive. Singh had also cited his daughter's medical conditions requiring parental supervision as an additional reason for the withdrawal. In its May 8 judgment, the commission noted that the school's failure to refund the fees after receiving the transfer certificate request constituted both deficiency in service and unfair trade practice. The commission has ordered appropriate deductions for the period of attendance before processing the refund.

State to launch helpline for land and revenue services

Patna: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday between the department of revenue and land reforms and CSC e-Governance Services India Limited, New Delhi, here. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Under the agreement, a helpline and call centre will be established in Bihar to provide citizens with information about various departmental schemes and to address their grievances. Officials said the call centre, expected to be operational from the first week of June, would be staffed by a trained team. It will assist with issues related to departmental policies, govt schemes, and citizens' concerns. The facility will also offer immediate support for land records, land rent, revenue disputes and other service-related queries. It is intended to serve as a reliable platform for complaint resolution and prompt application processing. Speaking at the event, the department's additional chief secretary, Deepak Kumar Singh, said the department had long planned to establish a call centre in the public interest. "Normally, people go to cyber cafés for online services where the operators often use their own mobile numbers instead of those of the applicants. This prevents applicants from receiving important notifications about any corrections needed in their applications," he said. He urged citizens to provide their own mobile numbers and avoid relying on middlemen. Department secretary Jai Singh said the department's operations have changed in recent years. "All services are now fully digital. The department needed an institution with a strong rural presence. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Through CSC, our aim is to ensure that people at the anchal (block) level can access all services," he said. Sanjay Kumar Rakesh, managing director and CEO of CSC e-Governance Services India Limited, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. "We are very excited about this collaboration with the Bihar govt, which will strengthen the Digital India mission and play a crucial role in delivering govt schemes to rural citizens. With CSC's grassroots reach and technical capabilities, this initiative will achieve widespread success," he said, adding, "We will carry out this important responsibility entrusted by the government with integrity." A department official added that the initiative is a major step towards transparent, accountable and digital governance. "Due to the digital divide, many people in rural areas struggle to access online services independently. CSC centres will now assist them in this regard," the official said.
