Women empowered at free self-defence workshop
Defence Unlimited marked Women's Month with a free self-defence workshop on August 10 at the Rivonia Sports Club, drawing a strong turnout of women eager to equip themselves with practical safety skills.
The interactive session covered the fundamentals of self-defence, from cultivating awareness, physical, mental, and emotional, to understanding social conditioning, identifying personal safety zones, and developing a self-defence mindset.

Participants were also guided through physical measures to counter potential threats.
Organiser Warren Ho said, 'This workshop is not about turning people into fighters. It's about giving women the knowledge, awareness, and confidence to protect themselves in real-world situations.'
Ho emphasised that self-defence starts long before any physical altercation.
'Awareness is the first line of defence. If you can recognise danger early, you can often avoid it altogether.'
The programme also tackled the often-overlooked influence of social conditioning.
'Many women are taught from a young age to be polite, not to make a scene, or to doubt their instincts. We challenge that mindset because hesitation can cost you valuable time in a dangerous situation.'
