Greg Hemphill and Nicola Sturgeon among Wigtown headliners
The couple, who present Jules and Greg's Wild Swim, will discuss their new guide to wild swimming in Scotland. Ex-First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, BBC News presenter Reeta Chakrabarti, former Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Del Amitri frontman Justin Currie, and BBC Antiques Road Trip star James Braxton will also feature. The festival, which will run from September 26th to October 5th, will feature more than 200 events and activities up and down the Galloway coast. Bibliophiles will be treated to author talks, wild-swimming, night walks, and garden saunas, as well as writing workshops and live music. Other guests include Scots language poet Len Pennie, broadcaster Louise Minchin, Professor John McKay, and novelist Lucy Ribchester, as well as The Herald's Vicky Allan, who will lead a mass wild-swim. The former First Minister will appear 'in conversation' with former Newsnight presenter Gavin Esler, and is expected to speak about her highly anticipated memoir Frankly, which will debut at the Edinburgh International Book Festival this month. Nimmo said: 'We've always loved the sound of Wigtown Book Festival and now we finally get to go. We're really looking forward to it. 'It's such a great line-up of authors, and there's so much more going on even beyond the book events. Plus the Galloway coast is so beautiful, we'll doubtless be off for a swim while we're there.' Adrian Turpin, the festival's outgoing Creative Director, added: 'Wigtown gives audiences the chance to enjoy famous names, new writers, great storytelling, big ideas and colourful characters in intimate surroundings at the heart of Scotland's National Book Town. 'The festival prides itself on being friendly, laid-back, full of surprises and intensely curious. Dive and and you never know what you will find." Despite a population of less than 1,000, Wigtown hosts 15 bookshops and book-related businesses, and has been known as 'Scotland's National Book Town' since 1998.

Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to appear at 2025 Wigtown Book Festival
Comedians Julie Wilson Nimmo and Greg Hemphill and Del Amitri frontman Justin Currie will also be appearing at Scotland's Book Town. Nicola Sturgeon is heading to this year's Wigtown Book Festival. The former First Minister will be in conversation with Gavin Esler in Scotland's Book Town to talk about her new memoir Frankly. Another highlight of the festival, which runs from September 26 to October 5 – will be comedians Julie Wilson Nimmo and Greg Hemphill. The couple will be closing the festival with a discussion about their new guide to wild swimming in Scotland, which accompanies their BBC TV series Jules and Greg's Wild Swim. Balamory star Julie said: 'We've always loved the sound of Wigtown Book Festival and now we finally get to go. We're really looking forward to it. 'It's such a great line-up of authors, and there's so much more going on even beyond the book events. Plus the Galloway coast is so beautiful, we'll doubtless be off for a swim while we're there.' There will be more than 200 events as part of the festival and other well known names set to appear are Del Amitri frontman Justin Curie, former chancellor Jeremy Hunt, broadcasters Reeta Chakrabarti and Louise Minchin and stand-ups Helen Lederer and Robin Ince. The festival's outgoing creative director, Adrian Turpin, said: 'Wigtown gives audiences the chance to enjoy famous names, new writers, great storytelling, big ideas and colourful characters in intimate surroundings at the heart of Scotland's National Book Town. 'The festival prides itself on being friendly, laid-back, full of surprises and intensely curious. Dive and you never know what you will find.' The programme, announced this week, also includes Rory-Cellan Jones telling the heart-warming story of how he adopted Sophie, the Romanian rescue dog; TV antiques expert James Braxton with adventures from the auction room; former newsreader and foreign reporter John Suchet explores his lifelong love affair with Beethoven; and the presenter of the BBC's The Big Scottish Book Club, Damian Barr, tells the extraordinary story of the love affair between 'the two Roberts', Scottish artists Colquhoun and Macbryde. There will also be a strong focus on new Scottish writing and appearances from some of the UK's most acclaimed non-fiction writers including Anne Sebba, Lucy Hughes-Hallett, Kate Summerscale, Andrew Lownie, Suzanne O'Sullivan and Horatio Clare. The winners of the Wigtown Poetry Prizes and the Anne Brown Essay Prize for Scotland will be announced during the festival, while Professor Sir John Kay will deliver the James Mirrlees lecture, in honour of the Galloway-born Nobel Prize-winner. The festival's offering also includes a strong young adult programme, supported by The Holywood Trust, and Big Wig, its dedicated children's festival.

Summer Nights in the Southside success as thousands enjoy gigs
King Creosote, Hothouse, Lighting Seeds and Glasvegas also featured across the events. The 6,000 capacity venue was packed out across each of the four nights and the concerts have been deemed a huge success by organisers. Del Amitri headlined night one of the event and were joined by King Creosote, Withered Hand & Kathryn Williams and Alice Faye as support acts. Echo & The Bunnymen headlined night three along with Lightning Seeds and Michael Head before Ocean Colour Scene were the main event with Glasvegas and Ben Walker also entertaining the sold out crowds.

Long-time rockers filled the tent in Queen's Park for 80s Scottish band Del Amitri while younger crowds flocked for Lana Del Rey's gig next door at Hampden Park. 3 Del Amitri seamlessly rocked their hearts out as if it were ten years ago. Over the course of the night, the band reminded everyone why they have endured - great songwriting, sharp vocals and a setlist of electric hits. Just last year, the Del Amitri's frontman, Justin Currie, revealed he has Parkinson's disease. Currie has continued playing and touring, undeterred by what he says is 'the uneasy feeling that another man is growing inside me slowly ceasing the means of control'. Despite the 60-year-old's diagnosis, Del Amitri seamlessly rocked their hearts out as if it were ten years ago. The faithful audience were happiest when belting out chart favourites of Roll to Me, Kiss This Thing Goodbye and Always the Last to Know. 3 The band played chart hits Roll to Me and Nothing Ever Happens Credit: Credit: Scottish Sun Lead guitarist Iain Harvie, with his iconic curtain of hair, showed off his impressive skill throughout the night. Most memorable were his slick blues-style entries in Lonely and Here and Now. You couldn't help but be amazed at Currie's strength and soulful voice which carried through the tent with raw honesty. The audience got to rest when the slower, more melancholy moments allowed the three frontmen to drop their guitars and show off their beautiful harmonies. Apart from the chart-toppers, highlights of the night came when Currie switched his bass for acoustic guitar in songs like Be My Downfall and Tell Her This. Rock legend 'gives away' he's Glastonbury's mystery performer as he flies into UK days before festival By the end of the concert, it was undeniable that this is a band bound by over 40 years of friendship. 'It's been a pleasure,' said Currie as the Glasgow crowd sang their hearts out to Nothing Ever Happens.
