2 boys killed in godown explosion in northeast Delhi; 1 boy, man still critical

A pair of siblings, aged four and seven, died early Sunday morning after being critically injured in a CNG cylinder explosion at a godown in Sunder Nagri, northeast Delhi on Saturday evening, police said. The victims' nine-year-old brother, and a 25-year-old godown worker, are still undergoing treatment in a hospital and are said to be critical, police added. The godown was used to store, repair and resell old CNG cylinders and was illegal since it was inside a residential building, police said. The explosion occurred at 4.30 pm, police said. 'The cylinder exploded during repairs, and the force blew open the godown's iron gate which then fell on three siblings, aged four, seven and nine, who were playing outside the godown. The explosion impact also gave two of the boys 85% and 90% burns. A godown worker, identified as Mohammad Arshad, a resident of Sunder Nagri, also suffered injuries. Locals called us and when we arrived, we learned that the injured had been admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Dilshad Garden. The two boys who suffered burns succumbed to their injuries today,' said an investigator. The boys were identified as Raja, 4, Sakib, 7, and Abbas, 9, said Delhi Fire Service officials. Their parents work as tailors in Nand Nagri, police said. Police said that crime and forensic teams examined the scene to ascertain the cause of the blast and assess the extent of damage. 'The building consists of a ground floor and three upper floors. Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot immediately. The shop on the ground floor was illegally storing CNG cylinders in a residential building. Such practices are extremely dangerous,' said Atul Garg, director, DFS. 'Preliminary findings suggest negligence in handling inflammable material. We have already initiated legal proceedings against the godown owner,' said deputy commissioner of police (northeast) Ashish Mishra, adding that a case under sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to fire), 125A(negligent conduct), 326G (mischief by explosive substance) and 106 (1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Nand Nagar police station. When asked about the establishment being illegal, the municipal corporation of Delhi (MCD) did not respond to HT's request for a comment.

Yamuna rejuvenation, new e-buses top Delhi CM Rekha Gupta's 100-day report

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday released a 'workbook' detailing her government's achievements in its first hundred days in office and explained why the city government has yet to roll out its flagship women's welfare scheme. Gupta said that 100 days were insufficient to implement the ambitious Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, as the effort is to ensure it reaches every eligible beneficiary. In its manifesto for the Delhi Assembly polls, which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won in February, the party had promised to provide a monthly stipend of ₹2,500 to women from poor families. The government has allocated ₹5,100 crore for implementing the scheme. 'We do not want any (eligible) woman (beneficiary) to be left behind,' she said at a press conference. The workbook, titled Kaam Karne Wali Sarkar: 100 Din Seva Ke, highlighted the government's initiatives, such as Yamuna rejuvenation, implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, augmentation of water supply through tankers, and procurement of electric buses. The document also mentioned the installation of improved street lighting in the city's 'dark corners', the implementation of a heat action plan, and the allocation of ₹500 crore to the Delhi Fire Service. Gupta said her government was committed to spending each rupee of the ₹1 trillion Budget for the 2025–26 fiscal transparently, unlike the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, which she accused of corruption.

Delhi-NCR weathers rising AC fire incidents, short circuits. Read this to stay safe, alert

With the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi recording a peak power demand of 7,265 megawatts (MW) on May 19 — a record high for the month — it's no rocket science to know that air conditioners are at full blast to counter the soaring heat and humidity. This spike in power usage, however, throws light on the serious concerns of short circuiting and AC-related fire accidents due to overheating and electrical faults. Alarmed about the safety, during extreme heat, Vandit Madan, a marketing associate from Vivek Vihar shares how his family faced one such incident at his residence recently: 'My air conditioner sparked all of a sudden and soon after there was a strong burning smell. Thankfully I was home and noticed it in time to turn off the MCB instantly, which averted the fire from burning the house down.' According to Delhi Fire Service (DFS), around 140 calls per day are being received, this May, for fire-related issues in NCR. 'We often receive calls about fire incidents during the summer months, including cases involving air conditioners,' says Atul Garg, director, DFS, adding, 'In most AC-related fire cases, we've found the common causes to be either decayed internal wiring, a buildup of dust in the outdoor unit, and debris accumulating on filters and coils. If you notice sparks or a burning smell coming from your AC, switch off the MCB immediately and leave the room until a qualified technician arrives to inspect the unit.' Recent fire incidents in Delhi-NCR Ashok Vihar Police Station: Explosion in a split air conditioner unit Krishna Nagar: Fire at AC repair shop Noida Sector 18: Explosion in AC's compressor caused fire in an 8 storey building Surinder Pandey, a Noida-based electrician, shares that the complaint calls of AC fires have spiked unlike last month when Delhi's temperature was still bearable. 'Iss mahine mujhe har roz calls aa rahi hain, AC mein spark ki complaint ki. Just in the last five days, I've received over 15 calls. Zyadatar problems low quality equipment ki wajah se hoti hain. When the wiring is not done properly, especially in builder flats, then during high voltage demand there are higher chances of fire.' Some technicians suggest regular servicing of the ACs, but others say that it's difficult to cater to everyone since demand is higher. 'We've had to turn down some requests of servicing because we are overwhelmed with the number of calls we have received this month,' shares Ram Taneja, a technician from a Gurugram-based AC servicing centre, adding: 'Especially in the last week, before it rained, it was very hot and people were after our lives to get their ACs serviced since sparking incidents ki news se kaafi log ghabraye huye thhe.'
