Only CNG, EV three-wheelers, LCVs to be inducted by aggregators and delivery firms in NCR from Jan 2026

New Delhi: In a move to reduce vehicular emissions in Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has directed that only CNG and electric vehicles shall be inducted into the commercial fleets of aggregators, delivery service providers, and e-commerce entities operating in the region from January 1, 2026. According to CAQM, the directive applies to three-wheeler autorickshaws, two-wheelers, and four-wheeler Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) and Light Goods Vehicles (LGVs) up to 3.5 tonnes (N1 category). No further induction of diesel or petrol-powered vehicles into these fleets will be permitted beyond the stipulated date. 'The existing fleet of vehicles onboarded by these service providers can be continued for such services,' the Commission stated. However, induction of any new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles running purely on diesel or petrol in the mentioned categories will be prohibited after January 1, 2026. The directive is part of a broader effort by CAQM to address the transport sector's significant contribution to the overall air pollution load in the National Capital Region, which remains high throughout the year and intensifies during winter months. The Delhi Transport Department has already implemented the Delhi Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme, 2023, for licensing and regulating aggregators and delivery firms . The Commission has now urged Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan to formulate similar comprehensive policies, especially targeting high vehicle density cities such as Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad. The commission emphasized that all Motor Vehicle Aggregators, Delivery Service Providers, and E-Commerce Entities under the jurisdiction of the NCR states must comply with the new directions. Governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan have been directed to create dedicated web portals, similar to the one developed by the Delhi Transport Department, for monitoring compliance. The NCR state governments have also been asked to publicise the directions widely among stakeholders.

DEVI buses to sport three-colour scheme

NEW DELHI: To enhance the visibility and identity of the recently launched Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVI) buses, the Delhi Transport Department has approved a fresh colour scheme for the fleet. The buses, which are currently seen only in green, will now also be painted dark orange and yellow. Officials cited making the electric buses more noticeable and recognizable for commuters from a distance behind this move. The new colour additions have been approved by the Transport Minister Pankaj Singh. 'The three-colour palette will not only increase the visual appeal of the DEVI buses but also help commuters identify them quickly in crowded traffic conditions,' a senior official from the department said. At present, 400 nine-metre electric buses are operating across Delhi. These vehicles will be the first to receive the new tri-colour treatment. Going forward, all newly inducted nine-metre DEVI buses under the scheme will come in the three approved colours: green, dark orange, and yellow. The government is expected to release a model of the new design soon for public and departmental reference. The decision to revise the colour scheme was taken after two separate orders were issued by the Transport Department in the last two weeks.

CM Gupta inaugurates 400 electric DEVi buses

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday inaugurated 400 new electric buses under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVi) scheme. The scheme, first introduced in the 2023 Delhi budget by the Aam Aadmi Party government as 'Mohalla buses', has now been renamed and launched by the BJP government. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Gupta said the initiative will help address last-mile connectivity issues in the city. 'The buses will provide commuters with eco-friendly, comfortable public transportation between metro stations and bus terminals,' she said. 2,080 more electric buses will be added to the fleet by the end of this year, she added. The 400 buses will first ply across east and west Delhi, covering the areas of Ghazipur, Vinod Nagar East and Nangloi. According to a Delhi Transport Department (DTC) official, 146 routes have been selected for the plying of these buses based on data of people's movements. Rohtash Sharma, a commuter who just learnt about the initiative on Friday, told The Hindu that if the bus service truly runs until midnight as promised, it would be of great help to the people of Delhi. 'Finding last mile connectivity during late nights are fairly difficult by itself, add to that the high costs and it's a nightmare,' she added. Each DEVi bus has a total 23 seats, out of which six seats are reserved for women. Each bus can also accommodate 13 standing passengers. The fare structure will range between ₹10 to ₹25 per person.

AI-enabled water dispensers to quench thirst soon at bus terminals & shelters in Delhi

With scorching heat taking a toll on the Capital, the Delhi Transport Department is planning to install Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled smart water dispensers at 16 bus terminals and 25 bus stops on a pilot basis. Touchscreen interface and AI technology to count the number of users are among the highlights of the smart dispensers. The installation of water coolers and dispensers in public places was also part of the Delhi Heat Action Plan 2025, recently revealed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. 'We have decided to install smart water dispensers at about 25 bus stands to provide free water facilities to bus commuters and pedestrians. These dispensers will be equipped with high-tech features such as a 43-inch waterproof, daylight-visible, high-resolution, colour digital display,' said a senior official. Officials further stated that tenders have been floated, and the dispensers are expected to be installed within a month. The estimated cost for installing dispensers at bus queue shelters is Rs 2.10 crore, and Rs 72 lakh for bus terminals The water dispensers will also be fitted with an AI camera to count the number of people using the facility. The dispensers have sensor-based dispensing systems, filter status monitoring, and tank level checks. 'Additionally, a cloud-based dashboard will enable real-time data transmission, supported by built-in Wi-Fi/4G connectivity with routers/modems,' the official said. Each dispenser will measure approximately 4 feet x 4 feet with a height of around 7 feet, a minimum 100 liters per hour (LPH) purification capacity, and 800 liters of combined raw and purified water storage. 'It will also feature an in-built chiller to maintain the water temperature between 15°C and 20°C, and will be weather-resistant to withstand heat, dust, and rain (Delhi conditions)… Our main aim is to ensure that a large number of people, especially those working outdoors, vendors, and others, stay hydrated during Delhi's high temperatures,' the official said. The dispensers will be refilled twice a day by the contractor awarded the project. 'While water ATMs exist at other locations, they are often poorly maintained or non-functional. To avoid this, the Delhi government plans to ensure a one-year warranty on the new dispensers and will beautify and properly maintain the installation sites,' the official underlined. If the pilot is successful, the programme will be expanded across the city, said officials. A count of the number of people using the facility will help officials get an estimate to expand the project across the city. Last week, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh reviewed the Delhi Heat Action Plan 2025 for the public transport system, announcing plans to deploy 'Jal Doots'—trained personnel who will provide clean drinking water to passengers at bus depots and shelters. 'These trained personnel will offer clean drinking water to passengers waiting for buses, helping to alleviate the effects of extreme heat. With the onset of summer, it is our responsibility to ensure passengers have access to clean drinking water at bus depots and shelters. 'Jal Doots' will serve as a vital link in delivering this support,' Singh said, adding that 10 major locations have been identified.
