Ben & Jerry's goes EV with zero-emission Rivian scoopmobiles
Ben & Jerry's is taking the ICE out of ice cream trucks with two electric Rivian vans that will serve up scoops on the go. The Vermont sweet treat maker is among the first high-profile customers for Rivian's commercial vans since the exclusive portion of its deal with Amazon ended in February. The vans will debut at the South by Southwest entertainment festival that starts March 7 in Austin, Texas. The rest of this year, they'll travel across the country to community events for Rivian owners and around Vermont. 'Collaborating with the Ben & Jerry's team to build the next generation of electric scoop trucks has been an incredible experience,' Brian Gase, Rivian's senior director of prototype development, said in a statement. 'It's one of those projects that just makes the team smile.' The Ben & Jerry's vans are based on Rivian's Delivery 500 model, which has an estimated range of 161 miles between charges. Rivian has delivered thousands of vans to Amazon since 2022 and in February opened up sales to other businesses. 'Working with Rivian, an industry leader that is committed to sustainability is an ice cream dream come true,' said Sean Slattery, Ben & Jerry's U.S. integrated marketing project lead. 'Today, Rivian helped Ben & Jerry's reduce our reliance on fossil fuels in a small way, while making things a little bit cooler ... which, as an ice cream company, is extremely difficult to do.' Now Anyone Can Buy Rivian's Electric Cargo Van
Looking to start a whisper-quiet delivery service, a zero-emissions food truck or other van-based business? Do those new round-eyed Amazon delivery vans leave you green with envy? Well, you're in luck, because Rivian -- maker of some of our favorite electric trucks and SUVs -- announced today that it's opening sales for its commercial delivery van to "fleets of all sizes in the US, whether they want 1 van or thousands." The initial 10,000 examples of what was then known as the Rivian Electric Delivery Van were ordered by Amazon in 2019. A major early investor in Rivian, the online retail giant held exclusive rights to the EDV until 2023 when the contract was fulfilled with over 20,000 EDVs in its fleet and Rivian began courting electric van sales to other large fleet buyers and using the EDV as a service vehicle platform. Today, the Illinois-based EV announced it is opening sales to anyone interested in its electric commercial van. The EV cargo van comes in two flavors, Delivery 500 and Delivery 700. The 500 is the more maneuverable of the two with its 478 cubic foot cargo box, shorter 157.5-inch wheelbase and smaller turning radius of 49.9 feet. The larger 700 boasts a bigger 652 cubic foot box which necessitates a longer wheelbase (187 inches) and wider, 53.9-foot turning circle. Both EVs share the same Rivian Commercial Vehicle powertrain with its single motor driving the front wheels to the tune of 320 horsepower and 299 pound-feet of torque. The stated Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the same at 9,500 pounds, but the slightly lighter Delivery 500 has just a scosche more payload (2,663 pounds versus 2,258 lbs) and a slight range advantage -- 161 miles versus the Delivery 700's 160. The Delivery 500 and 700 each also feature Rivian's suite of commerce, safety and convenience-focused technologies ranging from advanced driver assistance feature, surround-view cameras, connected dashboard tech and integrated fleet management and monitoring software. The Rivian Delivery 500 starts at $79,900 before taxes and destination charges while the larger Delivery 700 steps up to a bigger $83,900 price tag. Rivian Commercial Vans Now Available for Fleets of Any Size
The delivery van, formally named the Rivian Commercial Van (or RCV), can now be ordered for fleets of any size. The change in model comes after four years of exclusivity with Amazon, which ended in November 2023, when Rivian began selling to other customers. Now, regular business can buy the RCV for any fleet, including fleets as small as one vehicle. Pricing starts at $79,900. Small-business owners around the country looking for new delivery options can now order the same Rivian vans that Amazon has been using since 2019. The automaker is still limiting van sales to businesses only, but there's no longer a necessary minimum to make a sale. Rivian first announced the delivery van (now called the Rivian Commercial Van or RCV) in 2019. The announcement came as part of a deal for 100,000 vans brokered with Amazon. The Amazon tie-up included a four-year exclusivity period during which Rivian could only sell the van to Amazon. That exclusivity ended in 2023, when Rivian opened sales to other business partners—but only to customers buying in large quantities. Now, Rivian is opening sales to businesses of any size. Want just one van for your small business? That's perfectly fine. The RCV comes in two configurations: the Delivery 500 and the Delivery 700. The 500 is the smaller of the two. It's got a maximum payload of 2663 pounds and a GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of 9500 pounds, and it offers 487 cubic feet of storage. The 700 is slightly longer and wider. Cargo space increases to 652 cubic feet, with the payload dropping to 2258 pounds and the GVWR sticking to 9500 pounds. The powertrain is identical among the pair and houses a single motor that makes 320 horsepower and 299 pound-feet of torque on the front axle. The EPA range estimates are nearly the same, but the smaller 500's 161-mile estimate bests its larger twin by a single mile. Documents from Rivian show that regular AC charging peaks at 11 kW, with DC charging up to 100 kW. Fleet inquiries are live now on Rivian's website. Pricing for the smaller van starts at $79,900, with pricing for the larger van starting at $83,900.
