Man shot and killed by deputies in confrontation after apparent gator attack
A man believed to be on drugs was shot and killed Monday by Florida sheriff's deputies who had tried to shock him with a Taser as he wielded a set of garden shears shortly after he was apparently bitten by an alligator in a lake, a sheriff said. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told reporters the two deputies were trying to de-escalate the situation before the man, identified as 42-year-old Timothy Schulz, climbed into their running patrol vehicle and tried to get the weapons inside. That's when the deputies opened fire, Judd said. "This is just crazy stuff, OK?" Judd said. "You know that it's got to be true, you can't make it up." Schulz had a long history of drug-related arrests, Judd said. He had been released from jail last Tuesday after being arrested for possession of meth, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Monday's incident started when a convenience store worker at about 5:56 a.m. reported a man acting bizarrely, shaking and asking to call his son, Judd said. Deputies went to the store but couldn't find the man. At about 7:43 a.m., people reported a man later identified as Schulz swimming in a lake that contained multiple alligators, Judd said. One witness tried to give him a life preserver, and another tried to speak with him but received a growl in response, according to the sheriff. While Schulz was in the lake, he was apparently bitten by an alligator on his right arm, Judd said. "The fact that he was bitten by an alligator, significantly, and still continued his rampage is shocking," Judd said. "But if you're on enough meth, then the person you see is not the person that's attacking." When Schulz emerged from the water in a gated community in Lakeland, east of Tampa, he picked up a set of garden shears that had been left outside, Judd said. Schulz then tried to break into a vehicle with a brick. After deputies arrived at the scene, Schulz charged at them with the shears, Judd said. The deputies tried to de-escalate the situation, told Schulz to put the shears down and attempted to shock him with a Taser twice, according to the sheriff. "They were still trying to take him peacefully into custody," Judd said. Schulz entered the deputies' still-running patrol vehicle from the passenger side and tried to get either the rifle or the shotgun inside from their holders, Judd said. The deputies then shot Schulz multiple times. The sheriff's office posted photos to social media showing the patrol vehicle with what appeared to be multiple bullet holes through the windshield. The incident is under investigation, Judd said. The deputies have been placed on routine administrative leave during the initial phases of the investigation. French leader's office downplays "moment of togetherness" with wife
Hanoi, Vietnam — French President Emmanuel Macron's office on Monday downplayed an incident in which his wife appeared to push his face away as he arrived in Vietnam to begin a Southeast Asian tour. Video shot by The Associated Press in Hanoi on Sunday evening shows Macron's plane door opening, revealing him. His wife Brigitte's arms then emerge from the left of the open doorway, she places both hands on her husband's face and gives it a shove. The president appears startled but quickly recovers and turns to wave through the open door. She remains concealed by the aircraft body, making it impossible to see her facial expression or body language. They proceed down the staircase for the official welcome by Vietnamese officials, though Brigitte Macron does not take her husband's offered arm. The video clip circulated rapidly online, promoted particularly by accounts that are habitually hostile to the French leader. Macron's office initially denied the authenticity of the images, before they were confirmed as genuine. Later, Macron told reporters that he and his wife had just been joking around. "We are horsing around and, really, joking with my wife," he said, calling reports on the incident overblown: "It becomes a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe." A close associate of the president earlier described the incident as a couple's harmless "squabble." Another member of his entourage also played down the significance of the incident. "It was a moment when the president and his wife were decompressing one last time before the start of the trip by joking around," the second source told reporters, including AFP's. "It's a moment of togetherness. No more was needed to feed the mills of the conspiracy theorists," the source added, blaming pro-Russian accounts for negative comments about the incident. The Macrons got married in 2007, but they met when the president was still in high school, and she was a teacher. Vietnam is the first stop on an almost week-long tour of Southeast Asia for Macron, where he will pitch France as a reliable alternative to the United States and China amid economic uncertainty fueled by the two global giants' ongoing trade tariff war. He will also visit Indonesia and Singapore. Delta Air Lines' 100th year takes flight 9 young siblings killed in Israeli airstrike in Gaza Full interview: Jack McCain on "Face the Nation"

Delta shortens seasonal service between Albuquerque and Minnesota
May 13—New Mexicans hoping to fly Delta Air Lines from Albuquerque to Minnesota after November will have to deal with a stop on the way. Four of Delta Air Lines' nonstop seasonal routes to and from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, which includes a route between Minnesota and Albuquerque International Sunport, will cease earlier than usual, an airline spokesperson told the Journal on Tuesday. The daily nonstop flight is offered seasonally May through January, but Delta has made the decision to cut the flight earlier, starting Nov. 6. "Delta routinely adjusts its network operations to best accommodate demand," a statement from the spokesperson said. "We will work to rebook impacted customers on alternative itineraries. We deeply apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause." The other three cities for which some of Delta's Minnesota flights will cease early include Buffalo, New York; Fairbanks, Alaska; and Great Falls, Montana. The routes for these cities will end after September. The spokesperson noted that the flight offering will return in May 2026. In the meantime, flyers will still be able to fly to Minnesota using Delta Air Lines, but it will be a direct flight with a layover instead of a nonstop. Daniel Jiron, the Sunport's business development manager, said the seasonality of the flight is nothing new. He said Delta has offered the nonstop flight since 2010 and started offering it seasonally in 2012. He reiterated that this flight is not being eliminated — only paused earlier than usual. "Somehow, somewhere, something got written that they're eliminating all these cities... so everybody's in a panic. What we have been told is, 'Oh no, it's pausing earlier than normal in January,'" Jiron said. "It's not wonderful news, but you know, we don't anticipate it going away, because it does well." While one flight offering is being cut short early, another flight offering will soon be expanding, the Delta spokesperson said. Delta will be increasing daily service between Albuquerque and Salt Lake City this summer from three to four flights. The Sunport is also set to welcome a new flight offering next week, as nonstop flights to and from Dulles International Airport in Virginia kick off May 22. The flight, represented by the airport code IAD, will be offered by United Airlines once daily. "It gives us better connectivity to and from Washington, D.C. It's something we've been working on for a number of years," said Manny Manriquez, the Sunport's deputy director of innovation and commercial development. "United has actually served that route just for the Balloon Fiesta, and we've seen really good numbers between Albuquerque and Washington, D.C.," Manriquez said. "We're excited to launch it."
