The unexpected rise of Zohran Mamdani
Jun 26, 2025 09:29 PM IST The unexpected arrival of Zohran Mamdani to the centrestage of American politics is remarkable. Born to parents of Indian origin — academic Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair — the 33-year-old self-declared democratic socialist is the antithesis of all that Donald Trump's America represents. President Trump's response on social media to Mamdani clinching the Democratic party's nomination for the New York mayoral poll, scheduled for later this year, was: 'A 100% communist lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming mayor.' Mamdani's rise in the Democratic ranks may not be merely a reflection of the Big Apple's melting pot society, but also a pushback from young Democrats. (REUTERS) New York is not America, surely. However, Mamdani's rise in the Democratic ranks may not be merely a reflection of the Big Apple's melting pot society, but also a pushback from young Democrats who prefer to rally around a young radical willing to confront the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement directly on sensitive issues such as migration and faith. Mamdani is assertive about his Asian roots and Muslim identity and vocal about his support for the rights of Palestinians. Interestingly, he built his following by borrowing a leaf from the Trump presidential campaign playbook, which sought to reduce the cost of living for Americans. Mamdani's citizen-centric urban politics wants to 'freeze the rent', provide 'free buses', and 'a city you can afford'. These are agendas that transcend ethnic and faith fault lines and unite New Yorkers under the umbrella of what may be deemed as class concerns. That said, Mamdani may be deemed a divisive figure even within the Democrat establishment for his radical views, which will make it easy for the MAGA bloc to caricature. On the contrary, just as President Trump and MAGA rewrite the rules of politics and policy-making in America, Mamdani may turn out to be that figure who can mobilise a young America in favour of the Democratic Party in a polarised polity. One thing is for sure: Mamdani as NY mayor will not be business as usual. Unlock a world of Benefits with HT! Trump calls New York's mayoral primary Zohran Mamdani "communist lunatic"
US President Donald Trump launched a blistering attack on New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and several progressive Democrats in a pair of Truth Social posts on Thursday, calling Mamdani a '100% Communist Lunatic' and accusing the Democratic Party of pushing the country toward ruin. 'It's finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line,' Trump wrote. 'Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor.' He continued with personal jabs, calling Mamdani's voice 'grating' and questioning his intelligence, while mocking his support from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her allies, whom Trump referred to as 'AOC+3, Dummies ALL.' Trump also took aim at Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, sarcastically calling him 'our Great Palestinian Senator' and accusing him of 'groveling' to Mamdani. In a follow-up post, Trump mocked the Democratic Party's future, proposing a satirical 'dream team' of left-wing politicians. 'The Democrats should nominate Low IQ Candidate, Jasmine Crockett, for President, and AOC+3 should be, respectively, Vice President, and three High Level Members of the Cabinet,' he wrote. 'Added together with our future Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and our Country is really SCREWED!' Trump's posts came in the wake of a major political upset in New York City, where Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist and current State Assemblyman, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary. The victory, which has not yet been officially certified due to ranked-choice voting, shocked the city's political establishment and marked a historic breakthrough for the progressive left. Mamdani, who is poised to become the city's first Muslim and Indian American mayor if elected in November, ran a grassroots campaign focused on bold economic reforms and vocal support for the Palestinian cause—positions that set him apart from the party's centrist figures. His campaign was backed by prominent progressives including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
