Charlotte-based US Attorney appointed by Joe Biden steps down as chief officer for Western District of NC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – U.S. Attorney Dena J. King announced that she stepped down from her position as the Western District's chief law enforcement officer effective Wednesday. 'It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of the Western District of North Carolina,' said King in a statement. 'I've had the privilege of working alongside some of the most talented public servants who are dedicated to serving our communities with integrity, distinction, and excellence.' The United States and North Carolina file False Claims Act complaint against medical equipment supplier King is the first person of color to be appointed to the position in the Western District of North Carolina, based in Charlotte. She was nominated by then-president Joe Biden on Sept. 28, 2021, and was officially sworn into the position two months later. During her tenure, she led an office of nearly 100 federal prosecutors and support personnel, serving a district that covers 32 counties across the western part of the state. The WDNC also includes half of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. During her time in office, King formed WDNC's first ever Civil Rights Team, reconstituted the Western District's Health Care Fraud Task Force and prioritized the protection of vulnerable populations from exploitation and violence. King previously served as WDNC's Deputy Criminal Chief, assistant U.S. Attorney for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of North Carolina, an enforcement attorney in the Securities Division of the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State, and an assistant District Attorney in Mecklenburg County. The Western District of North Carolina covers 32 counties across the western part of the state. King was the first person of color to be appointed to the position in the Western District of North Carolina. She was nominated by former President Joseph Biden on Sept. 28, 2021, and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Nov. 19, 2021. She was sworn in on Nov. 29, 2021. 'Serving as U.S. Attorney has given me the privilege of working alongside our dedicated federal, state, and local law enforcement partners,' said King. King formed the district's first Civil Rights Team to enhance enforcement and community engagement regarding civil rights laws. She also reconstituted the Health Care Fraud Task Force, which recovered millions for government programs. King's initiatives, such as Think Again and United Against Hate, aimed to reduce gun violence and foster relationships between law enforcement and communities. King's office partnered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and other districts to address school violence, teen dating violence, effective leadership, and positive conflict resolution. 'Being U.S. Attorney is an incredible job,' said King. 'It's been an honor and a privilege to have served in this role and I will always be incredibly thankful for the opportunity.' King will be succeeded by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Lawrence J. Cameron as Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina until there is a replacement. Jason Travis Shook, 42, of Conover, was sentenced Tuesday to 17.5 years in prison and five years of supervised release for drug and gun charges, as announced by U.S. Attorney Dena J. King for the Western District of North Carolina. 14 with ties to Mexican cartels sentenced for trafficking drugs in Charlotte area Shook was found guilty of distributing large amounts of methamphetamine in the area, leading to his arrest in August 2022 after a vehicle pursuit and crash. Law enforcement discovered methamphetamine, cash, and a firearm in his possession. U.S. Attorney Dena J. King announced the sentencing, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the DEA and the Catawba County Sheriff's Office in the investigation. The investigation revealed that Shook was observed transferring a backpack containing methamphetamine and cash into his vehicle before leading police on a chase. After crashing, he tried to get away by jumping into Lake Hickory but he was apprehended shortly after. Shook's prior criminal history includes felony convictions for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and second-degree kidnapping, making it illegal for him to possess firearms and ammunition. Charlotte man gets 37 months for firearm possession by convicted felon

A 26-year-old Charlotte man has been sentenced to 37 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and transfer of a machinegun, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Dena J. King. Shakor Daniels was arrested on January 16, 2024, after attempting to sell a firearm to an undercover ATF agent. The arrest followed a series of undercover operations where ATF agents purchased illegal Glock switches and firearms from Daniels, who was advertising these items on social media. ALSO READ: 'Habitual felon' sentenced for shooting at CMPD officers during foot chase 'Go fed or go home,' was the tagline Daniels used on his social media account to advertise Glock switches, which are illegal conversion devices that turn semi-automatic pistols into fully automatic firearms. Daniels admitted to possessing a firearm for protection when law enforcement found two firearms in his vehicle during a traffic stop on June 13, 2023. Daniels, who has prior criminal convictions, is prohibited from possessing firearms. Daniels remains in federal custody and will be transferred to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The case was investigated by the ATF and Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Charlotte.
