Charlotte-based US Attorney appointed by Joe Biden steps down as chief officer for Western District of NC
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – U.S. Attorney Dena J. King announced that she stepped down from her position as the Western District's chief law enforcement officer effective Wednesday.
'It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of the Western District of North Carolina,' said King in a statement. 'I've had the privilege of working alongside some of the most talented public servants who are dedicated to serving our communities with integrity, distinction, and excellence.'

King is the first person of color to be appointed to the position in the Western District of North Carolina, based in Charlotte. She was nominated by then-president Joe Biden on Sept. 28, 2021, and was officially sworn into the position two months later.
During her tenure, she led an office of nearly 100 federal prosecutors and support personnel, serving a district that covers 32 counties across the western part of the state. The WDNC also includes half of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
During her time in office, King formed WDNC's first ever Civil Rights Team, reconstituted the Western District's Health Care Fraud Task Force and prioritized the protection of vulnerable populations from exploitation and violence.

The office also touts prioritized strengthening partnerships with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders through training seminars on Department of Justice priorities and U.S. Attorney's Office initiatives.
'Our collective mission is to serve and protect the people of Western North Carolina,' King said. 'I stand proud of our accomplishments and our efforts to support law enforcement, build strong partnerships with our communities, and uphold justice.'
King previously served as WDNC's Deputy Criminal Chief, assistant U.S. Attorney for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of North Carolina, an enforcement attorney in the Securities Division of the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State, and an assistant District Attorney in Mecklenburg County.

4 suspects facing 10 additional counts of attempted murder in Catawba Co. mass shooting

Andy Nilsson files to challenge incumbent Senator Thom Tillis in 2026 midterms
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The midterm elections are more than a year away, but candidates are already jockeying for a position. Retired Winston-Salem businessman Andy Nilsson has filed to challenge incumbent Senator Thom Tillis. 'We've got someone who, when he's voting, votes against the president, and doesn't really show up here to explain why or defend himself, it's like we've got a senator who's absent,' Nilsson told Queen City News. Nilsson spoke with Chief Political Correspondent Andy Weber in Greensboro Friday as the state GOP gathered for their annual convention. The odds are against the Republican challenger, as Tillis has already raised several million dollars and brought on staff with ties to the Trump presidential campaign. 'I knew getting into this, that was a big mountain to climb. I knew how big it was. I mean, this is a guy who's been in for 12 years, who's running for 18. He's got a lot of money, he's got a lot of PAC support, but that goes to the center of my argument, that he's out of touch,' insisted Nilsson. Nilsson argued not only is he a better choice over Tillis, but that he also is the right person to face a potential democratic nominee and former North Carolina Governor, Roy Cooper. 'I'm not a typical politician. Everybody that Roy Cooper has run against in however many elections that he run has been a typical, recycled, swamp-dwelling politician, I'm not. I was 30 years in business until I retired and started coaching high school football, now I'm working with special needs kids, that's what I do.' Cooper himself has not announced if he will run. Man sentenced for string of armed robberies targeting Trinidad construction workers
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A D.C. man was sentenced to 16 years in prison for a series of armed robberies that prosecutors said targeted construction workers in the Trinidad neighborhood. The U.S. Attorney's Office (USAO) for the District of Columbia said that Franco Rawlings Jr., 24, was charged with two counts of armed robbery, one count of robbery and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty in August 2024 to the charges. Fairfax County police searching for 3 involved in burglary, attempted burglary Court documents said that Rawlings and a co-conspirator worked together to rob Hispanic construction workers (whom they called 'Migos' in their texts) at gunpoint. According to evidence, on April 18, 2023, Rawlings approached a welder who was working at a home in the 1400 block of Montello Ave., NE, pointed a gun at him and demanded money. He stole the victim's wallet, which had $700 inside. On May 30, 2023, Rawlings and the co-conspirator approached two victims installing a deck in the 1300 block of Montello Ave. NE. They 'forced the victims into the basement, then to the ground at gunpoint.' The pair robbed the victims and then left. On June 27, 2023, Rawlings and the co-conspirator once again approached construction workers in Northeast D.C. Prosecutors said that they confronted three workers who were remodeling a home in the 1100 block of Owen Pl. NE. Rawlings was armed with a gun and ordered the victims to raise their hands. The duo stole money from the victims before escaping. DC Public Schools to ban cell phone use starting in 2025-26 school year One day later, on June 28, 2023, officers with the Metropolitan Police Department arrested Rawlings.
