Gujarat teen arrested for 50+ cyberattacks during 'Operation Sindoor'

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Monday apprehended an 18-year-old named Jasim Shahnawaz Ansari from Nadiad for his suspected involvement in cyber terrorism activities. According to ATS officials, Ansari escalated his cyber attacks following the launch of India's Operation Sindoor , which was a response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Investigations revealed that between April and May 2025, Ansari and a group of juveniles allegedly carried out cyberattacks on over 50 Indian government websites , targeting sectors such as defense, finance, aviation, urban development, and various state departments. The arrest was made based on intelligence gathered during surveillance by the Gujarat ATS. Authorities discovered that Ansari and his associates operated a Telegram group called "AnonSec" where they planned and executed DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks designed to crash websites by flooding them with traffic. Ansari reportedly taught himself Python programming through YouTube and downloaded hacking tools from GitHub. These tools were used via mobile apps like Termux and Pydroid to carry out the attacks. He would verify their success through platforms like and then share screenshots in the AnonSec group, often accompanied by anti-India messages such as 'Hi, India, we just took down your shield and servers.' The group, made up of like-minded youth, frequently changed its name and shared posts promoting anti-national sentiments. On May 7, 2025, a coordinated attack targeted 20 Indian government websites, during which the group posted statements like 'India may have started it, but we will be the ones to finish it.' Live Events Authorities also disclosed that Ansari recently failed his Class 12 science exams, while one of his juvenile associates is still in Class 12. ATS is now probing whether the suspects were operating independently or were influenced by foreign elements. Investigators are examining their digital tools, software, and online footprints. The Gujarat ATS has filed an FIR under Sections 43 and 66F of the Information Technology Act, which pertain to cyber terrorism. [With TOI inputs]

Since Pahalgam terror attack on 22nd April, India is thwarting nearly 30-40 cyber attacks daily

Since the Pahalgam terror strike, India has been facing a barrage of 30-40 daily cyberattacks, initially targeting the financial sector and then spreading to critical infrastructure like the power sector. These attacks, primarily DDoS, aim to disrupt operations and deface government websites. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads New Delhi: India has been repelling 30-40 major cyberattacks every day since the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike, ET has learnt. The wave of attacks began with financial sector entities, before spreading and persisting across critical infrastructure in the power has emerged as a key front in the ongoing standoff with Pakistan, with constant monitoring and countermeasures being deployed across multiple levels of government and to top officials, the attacks have primarily taken the form of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) - overwhelming digital services with fake traffic to disrupt operations. Attempts were also made to deface government websites and infiltrate datasets. While the attacks have been relentless, Indian agencies have successfully averted any major damage so far, thanks to fortified firewalls and layered defensive security remains on high alert. All government communication has now been brought under an enhanced security regime. Since the Pahalgam attack, CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) has issued three advisories focused on secure communication - dated April 26, May 1, and May Saturday, the government held a key meeting with nearly 15 technology and communication stakeholders - including representatives from NASSCOM and the Data Security Council of India - to flag potential cyber threats and push for stronger security at all critical data centers. The industry was also advised to be prepared to support government efforts in protecting national cyber infrastructure The Department of Telecommunications has been tightening national firewall protocols for incoming data traffic. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) and its units, including CERT-In, are coordinating with Indian missions abroad and domestic organizations to bolster cyber this week, around 200 Chief Security Officers were put through a cybersecurity drill.

Surge in cyber attacks, Maharashtra cyber department warns to stay vigilant

Amid the rising tensions along the India-Pakistan border, Maharashtra State Cyber Department on Saturday (May 10, 2025), instructed citizens to 'stay vigilant' while interacting with digital content or accessing documents from unverified sources, as there has been a surge in cyber attacks after India launched 'Operation Sindoor'. Maharashtra Cyber Police has warned people about malware-infected files targeting individual user devices. 'These files are sent as government-related files so that the probability of engaging with the document is high, and once opened, can lead to data theft, system surveillance, or broader network compromise,' stated the Additional Director General of Police office. Operation Sindoor LIVE updates - May 10 Given the scenario, the authority has advised people to be cautious of clicking on unsolicited links or opening attachments from unverified sources. Users must refrain from downloading documents labelled as government files or opening them without confirming the authenticity of the source. Other instructions are to use updated antivirus software, regular system scans, secure login practices, and two-factor authentication. Operation Sindoor is a strategic countermeasure launched in response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, where 26 people lost their lives. Maharashtra State Cyber Department has been keeping an eye on online platforms to detect, and act upon unlawful digital activities. While doing so, the department has come across 'hostile' cyber entities, who in retaliation to Operation Sindoor are waging cyber warfare. 'The cyber-attacks, including Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and digital defacement campaigns, have intensified from the other side, attacking infrastructure systems and government websites. These attacks are aimed at disrupting essential public services and undermining the credibility of government platforms,' as per the Maharashtra Cybercrime officials. DDoS attack targets a server or application with malicious traffic so that legitimate traffic is unable to access the website.

Staggering number of cyber attacks fought off by Met Office last year revealed as hackers ‘swarm it on daily basis'

THE Met Office was one of six Government agencies hit by 15million cyber attacks last year. Around 40,000 threats a day were fought off by the public bodies in 2024, The Sun on Sunday can reveal. The Met Office blocked more than five million phishing emails, nearly double 2023's total. The UK Atomic Energy Authority fended off 1.67million spam and malware messages. There were 223,589 malicious emails to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, with another 1,111 at the Government Legal Department. The Office for National Statistics, which retains hack records for only 90 days, blocked 485,908 emails from November to February — 5,400 a day. The ONS also faced 15 Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, where a website or inbox is flooded with traffic. But the DVLA faced an avalanche, with 7.1million attempted DDoS hits. Malicious emails to the Cardiff-based agency also nearly tripled from 54,105 in 2023 to 153,189. Bodies including the MoD, Home Office, HMRC and Cabinet Office refused to release data under Freedom of Information laws — saying it may hamper efforts to fight cyber crime. It comes as several retail giants, including M&S, have been paralysed by cyber attacks. Internet security expert Graham Cluley said: 'Britain's public sector isn't just under attack — it's being swarmed digitally on a daily basis.' The National Cyber Security Centre said it provides advice and guidance for government partners, helping 'bolster the cyber resilience of the public sector'. 1
